1 A Publication of the Knights of Columbus Council 9924 October, 2018 My Dear Brothers in Christ Grand Knights Message Of our two hundred and forty plus members, I and the Lord have the same question - as a Knight your/our mission is to serve, This what Jesus also asks of us. Hence why is that so few come to meeting and so few volunteer for our projects. I was sick for the parish picnic but I want to thank those who were there and did a fantastic job showing the strength of Knighthood, by all reports. 2 Cross and Compass Page 2 Food Collection Sunday The Food Collection was very successful this month. We collected $1300 and 900 pounds of food. Thank you to the many Brothers that helped with the collection. The Food Collection team needs Brother Knights to help collect food at the 3:00 and 5:00 Saturday Masses, and the 10:00 and 12:00 Sunday Masses. Please consider donating 15 to 20 minutes before, or after, these Masses. The November Food Collection dates are November 24 & 25. Congratulations John Kopinsky received his Knighthood Degree in Sarasota, onoct20, at St. Patrick Church. Please pray for all the people who have been affected by Hurricane Michael. Properties have been devastated, Jobs have been lost, and animals have been abandoned and died. Hurricane Michael, a Category 4 hurricane, was the third strongest land falling hurricane in the US on record, May God protect them all. Bless the first responders, the volunteers and the charitable organizations for their service and support. Not a Fourth Degree Knight? Why not? Your facial expressions and body language show how you feel about being a Knight of Columbus. Maintain a positive attitude, smile often, avoid being negative and always look the prospective member in the eye when talking with him. Until next month. God Bless Sam Mattoni Membership Chair Seminarian Kevin Avellaneda Kevin began his journey with our Lord while he was an altar boy in his home parish in Bogotá, Colombia. In service to his faith community, Kevin taught Ethics and Religion at his local Catholic school. Several years ago, he attended a program in Chicago to help young Latinos discern God s will for their lives. As a part of this program, he felt a calling to the Priesthood and transferred to the Diocese of Venice to start his seminarian journey. Currently, Kevin is in his third year of Theology at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, Florida. Join in whenever you arrive!,,, Along the Way: Back in 1952 when I entered a seminary for three years, the teach ers were Capuchin priests. They had a special veneration of a humble Capuchin priest called Padre Pio. His then living body bore the stigmata, the wounds of Christ. When he came to mind recently I Googled him and read his biography. When someone asked him, How should I live? he answered, Pray, hope and don t worry. Praying is how we develop an intimate friendship with God. Hope, as a pastor of mine once defined it, is the future tense of faith. Faith enables us to believe the truths about God. Hope is trusting that He will honor His promises. Don t worry is a powerful habit that gives us peace. The key here is that we trust in God to handle everything in our life. Of course we must take some initiative since God can t steer a parked car. But we pray and then act with the confidence that God will confirm our actions if they are in line with His will or gently redirect us if we have picked a less perfect way. How should we live? Pray, hope, and don t worry.

There are several needs the parish has. Sacristans: Arrive 45 minutes prior to the mass. Prepare the Holy Eucharist for the celebration of mass, light candles, prepare the various books used for mass and cleaning holy materials after mass. Eucharistic Ministers: Distribute the body and blood of Christ during the mass. Lectors: Lord Read the Word of the Ushers: Welcome all parishioners, find them seats if need be, take up financial collections and pass out bulletins after mass. This is the ONLY group which features ALL former members of the Beach Boys Band - and each member has numerous touring and recording credits from many years with the group! The Knights contributed the food and cooking and other help wherever it was needed. 400 attended people and all LOVED it. Here are a few pictures from the event. 9 Cross and Compass Page 9 K of C Florida Council Raffle offers $45,000 in prizes! Our Council was issued 250 books, containing 12 tickets in each book, a total of 3,000 tickets. Tickets are $1.00 each, or $12.00 a book. The Council retains $6 of every book sold, or $1,500 if all books are sold. As last year, the member selling the book is eligible for a cash prize by entering his name on the back cover of the book when he turns it in, with the 12 completed stubs, and money, to this year s coordinators, Bob Burhoe and Bill Sanchez. A Quick Start drawing and an Early Bird drawing will be conducted for ticket book solicitors only. The Quick Start drawing will be held during the Mid-year meeting in December, One ticket solicitor in each region will win $250 from this drawing. Ticket books with backs must be returned to the State by November 25, 2018 with the $6 per book to be eligible. The above must be received by the above coordinators by the November 13 th meeting so that FS Tom Reno can mail them into the State Office. The Early Bird drawing will take place at the Florida State Council Board meeting held during March, One winner in each region will be awarded $400. Ticket books with backs must be returned to the State by February 22, 2019 with the $6 per book to be eligible. Quick start tickets will be included in the Early Bird drawing. When this deadline approaches, an will be sent to advise you when these tickets should be returned to the above coordinators. All raffle ticket distribution ends May 6, All tickets, donations and raffle tickets must be in by May 15, Final drawing will be held at the Florida State Council Annual Convention Dinner, May 25, 2019 in Orlando, Fl. The r does not need to be present to win. Solicitors/Sellers Prizes: 1 st prize winning ticket gets $1,000 2 nd prize winning ticket gets $750 3 rd prize winning ticket gets $500 4 th through 8 th winning tickets get $100 each. Raffle tickets will be available starting at the September 11 th Council meeting. The Sugar Bowl Fund, supported by the Show of Shows helped six families, with seven children, with rent and utilities payment. Also helped was a mother with one child transition from temporary housing to permanent housing. The total amount of assistance was $8535. The Sugar Bowl Fund was founded by the Knights of Columbus in District 38, now District 51, and partnered with Catholic Charities. The Sugar Bowl Fund is now supported by councils in Sarasota and Manatee Counties and helps families in Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties.
