2 From the Pastor s Desk P A G E 2 The Light That Shines In Darkness It s no secret that we here in America, and even right here in our own community, are experiencing some dark days like we ve not seen before. The escalation of violence and hate crimes that has occurred in cities across this nation, coupled with the craziness that occurs in Washington, DC on a daily basis, are just symptoms of the times we are living in and the evil that s at the core of the hearts of so many throughout this nation. And now with the recent announcement of the closing of General Motors, a plant that has been a permanent fixture in our community for decades, employing over 1500 workers with good wages, it appears that the outlook for our community is getting darker and darker as the days go by. But in the midst of the darkness and all the bad news we receive almost daily, there is hope for the people of God for our crisis. No matter how discouraging and hopeless our current situation may seem, this season of Christmas reminds us that there is a Christ for every crisis that we may experience in this life. He is the Light that shines in darkness. In spite of all the violence and tragedies that have taken place this year, or the recent troubling events that we all have witnessed world-wide, Christmastime is still a reminder to us of the hope we have and can live with because of Christ. No matter how dark it gets in this unfriendly world of ours, no matter how wicked the hearts many have become, no matter how many tragedies have taken place in the world around us, we can find joy, hope and peace in our Christ. It is, in essence, why He came: to bring light in the midst of our darkness, to bring hope in the midst of despair, to bring peace in the midst of confusion, to bring joy in the midst of our sorrow. The prophet Isaiah spoke to his generation as well as ours when he proclaimed, "The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light, and they that dwell in the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined." The Apostle John, speaking of Christ, declared, "in Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not". And Jesus Himself declared, "I am the light of the world, he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." That means that even though there may be the presence of darkness all around us, we don't have to walk (or live) in it, nor do we have to allow the darkness to consume or overtake us. In fact, we have been called to dispel the darkness with the light of Christ who lives in us. Darkness seems to disappear when light shows up. The words of a familiar carol that we sing around this time of year remind us of The Light that has come to dispel our darkness. The song says. Hark the herald angels sing, Jesus the Light of the world. Glory to the new born King. Jesus the Light of the World. Christ by highest heaven adored. Jesus the Light of the world. Christ the everlasting Lord. Jesus the Light of the world. Hail the heaven born Prince of Peace. Jesus the Light of the world. Hail the Son of righteousness. Jesus the Light of the world. Walk in the Light, beautiful Light. Come where the dewdrops of mercy shine bright. Shine all around us by day and by night. Jesus the Light of the world. He s the Light that shines in darkness. So, I say to those who have been or are being affected by the darkness in your life or around you, "Arise, shine, your light has come. And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you!" Kwanzaa Celebration As we prepare for the celebration of Christmas, we as African-Americans in this nation cannot forget to acknowledge and celebrate the Kwanzaa season as well. It is a part of our culture and heritage and connects us to our roots and history. The seven principles of Kwanzaa are vital to our existence and survival here in America, especially in the times in which we live. The Kwanzaa season begins on December 26 th, the day after Christmas and ends on January 1 st. The first night of the community celebration of Kwanzaa will be held here at New Bethel on the 26 th of December at 5:30 p.m. We hope to see you here.

3 New Bethel On The Move Page 3 Thursday, November 1st, several members attended a Prayer Vigil at Temple El Emeth honoring the lives of those tragically killed at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. Saturday, November 3rd, many of our women members attended the Women s Empowerment March & Rally held in downtown Youngstown. Sunday, November 4th, churches from around the valley participated in the Souls To The Polls event. Encouraging churches to help get its members to the polls to early vote. Sunday, November 4th, the combined choir participated in a Sacred Music Fest sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Association of Churches and the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance. The Fest was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Girard. Sunday, November 11th, the Prison Ministry held its annual Bake Sale. Saturday, November 10th, the NOBDA Abigail Hall Mission service was held at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Rev. Todd Johnson was the speaker. Sunday, November 11th, the Vessels of Worship, Daughters of Bethel and, Mime Ministry participated in a Gospel Youth Explosion held at Elizabeth Baptist Church. November 12th-14th, our annual Church Seminar was held. We had 3 nights of great teaching and preaching. This year s theme: Developing The Christ That Is In You. Tuesday, November 20th Members of New Bethel attended the 33rd Annual Mayors Interfaith Prayer Breakfast at the Mahoning Country Club. YSU President Jim Tressel was the guest speaker and the musical entertainment was provided by the YSU Pella Penguins. Thursday, November 22nd, Thanksgiving Services were held. Rev. Derrick Anderson and the Jerusalem Baptist Church family joined us in giving thanks this year for all God has done!!

23 P A G E 23 Jesus Is The Gift Written by Holley Garth Jesus is the gift that perfectly fits every heart, and it is with His love that all celebration starts. We rejoice in Him as we remember His birth and thank God for sending His only Son to earth. His life led from a manger to a cross on a hill where He faithfully followed His Father s perfect will. He freely laid down everything so that he could live, and there is no greater treasurer anyone could give. Like a scarlet ribbon, His love wrapped around the cross and He offered it to us all at the greatest cost. So each time that we give gifts, we remember what He has done and honor the perfect gift- - - God s one and only Son.
