Lonnie K. A. Simon On the 4 th Sunday of this month (March 24 th ) we will conduct both of our services in the former sanctuary in honor and recognition of our former pastor Rev. Lonnie Kwajo Asim Simon. It was in that sanctuary that he led this congregation for most of his pastorate here at New Bethel Baptist Church. It was in that sanctuary that many of us came to Christ and were baptized and were nurtured in the word. It was in that sanctuary where we were taught to be the church without walls and the importance of the church's role in the community. It was in that sanctuary where we heard the old Negro spirituals sung and powerful, relevant sermons preached. It's where many of us had our foundation laid for our spiritual walk with Christ. And we look forward to the opportunity each year to return to the old landmark to embrace the legacy of our past and recommit ourselves to God s call for New Bethel s Ministry in this 21 st Century.

2 P A G E 2 From the Pastor s Desk We have been preaching, teaching and emphasizing our church theme throughout this year in our sermons, Bible Study and in our leadership training and meetings. It is imperative that we embrace and began to embody our theme in order for us to be effective in what we ve been assigned to do in ministry. I truly believe that God gave us our theme to help us position ourselves to be used by Him in a greater way this year and beyond. He wants to teach us to rely and depend upon the Holy Spirit in all that we do in our service to Him. Too often we are caught up in our own personal agendas, desires, opinions and ideas that we try to implement in our various areas of service in God s church. God is not asking for our ideas and opinions for the ministry of His church, He is asking for our obedience to the Holy Spirit who He has placed in charge of the church. God has already established the agenda for the church and has already ordained the roles we are to play in it. All He wants us to do is to allow the Holy Spirit to lead, guide and direct us in our service to Him. He is not asking us to decide and vote on what we want to do for Him, but He wants us to connect with the plans He already has for His church and even our personal lives. Our steps have already been ordered by God and that s why He expects us to acknowledge Him in all of our ways so that He might direct our path. The second aspect of our church theme helps us to understand that it s not so much what we do in the ministry of the church, but why we are doing it. What is our true motive in the service we render unto the Lord? Is it for recognition or self-glory or personal gain? Is it out of obligation or the expectation of others? Or is it out of a grateful heart and a sincere desire to please God for all that He has done for us? I believe that God is concerned more about what s in our heart than He is what comes out of our mouths or the so-called good works that we do. In I Samuel 16:7 we are reminded that man looks on the outward appearance, but God looks upon the heart. In the New Testament in Matthew 15:8, Jesus says to the religious leaders of that day, this people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth and they do honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. God is not impressed with our religious rituals or our outward expressions of our religion that seek the praise and glory of men. He is impressed by a heart that loves Him and wants to serve Him because of the great love He has demonstrated toward us. That s why the Apostle Paul in II Corinthians 5:14,15 says, For Christ s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. It is my sincere heart s desire and prayer that we here at New Bethel catch the vision and embrace the message that our church theme is directing us towards. I believe we will experience and witness a mighty move of God in our midst when we commit ourselves to be led by His Spirit and compeled by His love in all that we do in His name.

3 New Bethel On The Move Tuesday, February 5th, several of our members attended the Interfaith Tea, which was held at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Campbell, Ohio. Sunday, February 10th, the 46th Rev. Lonnie K.A. Simon Annual Dinner was held at the Mahoning Country Club. A video presentation about Rev. L.K.A. Simon was shown and Pastor Simon shared his vision for The Lonnie Simon Legacy Awards were presented to Youth; Jaiden Humbert, Adult: Victoria Allen and Community: Rev. Dr. Lewis Macklin Tuesday, February 19th, the Mahoning Valley Association of Churches held its Annual Assembly. Our own Min. Ted Brown was sworn in as the new MVAC Board President. Congratulations Min. Brown! Saturday, February 23rd, The Links held its Black Diamond Brunch honoring all ages of men in the valley. Some of our own men were honored: Terrill Vidale, James Locker, Sir Solomon Watkins, and Jaiden Humbert. We are so proud of the work they are doing in the community. Page 3 Saturday, February 23rd, many of our members attended the Anna Chatman program that was held at the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio. Sunday, February 24th, we had a grand time enjoying the worship of area male choruses and groups sponsored by the New Bethel Male Chorus. Our unretired Sons of Bethel blessed us and Min. Ted Brown was the MC and did a masterful job. We thank the Music Ministry for providing us with a wonderful evening of music and song. Attention 1st Ward Residents!!
