We are also glad many of you were able to stay after church on November 11th for snacks and fellowship. We will be wrapping up the administrative details of the stewardship campaign over the next few weeks, but the actual results of our campaign may not be known until this time next year. As you know, the theme this year was What Shall We Bring, and we talked about being generous with our finances, with our time and talents, and with our grace. No doubt, we will have numerous opportunities to share all of those attributes during this Thanksgiving Christmas New Year s season. Stewardship during 2018 went well, so we know we can do it, and we have had some practice, so let s carry that momentum into 2019! If you have thoughts or questions about the campaign, please feel free to speak with anyone on the group (Shannon Jordre, Adriane Wodey, Bonnie Ogg, Connie Rough and Brooks Widder) we d welcome your feedback. On that note, we hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 2

Consistory Report Minutes of Glade UCC Consistory Meeting Tuesday, October 9, 7:00 PM Consistory Activities Bob Watson chaired the meeting, the Opening devotional was offered by Adam Frederick. The minutes from the September 4, 2018 meeting were reviewed and approved. Treasurer s Report The treasurer s report was accepted. Finance Committee Report Mr. Ziegler attended the meeting and gave a verbal report of his audit of our finances and financial management practices. He had 16 recommendations that break down into 7 categories. The finance committee will review the recommendations and prioritize the order of implementation, and if some things need to come to the Consistory, they ll be forwarded. New Business Society for Creative Anachronisms (SACA) had asked to use the church for a Saturday meeting in October or November, and we had discussed this at the last meeting. They have been advised to follow our standard application process. Regular rental fees would apply. We resumed our discussion of enhanced security, and re-keying the doors. Adam moved to accept Quote #2, which was to get new master locks/keys and a new lever handle for the LDM office for $735. Lorijean seconded the motion. The vote was in favor to go ahead and accept the quote. We continued our discussion of fireproof storage for historical documents. We have a large fireproof filing cabinet, but it s full. Can we describe these documents, and/or is there an inventory? Shannon will talk to Connie and/ or Brooks to see if they have an idea of the volume and type of documents, their format, etc. That would be helpful in determining how to proceed. Adam would be willing to help with future work if we want to try to inventory them, scan for online storage, etc. Property Bob and Brooks are still coordinating on installing, and plan to install a new exterior light for the parking lot soon. The crumbling exterior stairs on the side of the building have been repaired. The landscaping looks good. Shannon offered to remove the weeds in the back of the parking lot if he could figure out the property line. 4

Church & Ministry Becky reported that they have narrowed the Interim search to two candidates, and they will be reviewing those candidates in neutral pulpits in the next few weeks. That committee hope to have a recommendation soon. We d expect an interim pastor to be in place for about a year. At the November meeting we may need to vote to authorize the interim pastor a housing allowance to comply with IRS regulations Treasurers Report The combined Catoctin Association is planning to be pen pals with Syrian refugees in Lebanon through blogs and other social media. There is a plan for joint youth activities at a local mosque. New activities are planned to promote suicide prevention. DON T FORGET to order your Christmas Poinsettia, all orders must be in the church office no later than Monday, December 3rd. There are order forms in the back of this issue of Glade Tidings on page 19 as well as on the back table in the sanctuary. You can mail or drop your order off at the church office, or place in the box that is in the back of the church. 7 Glade Guild FALL Dinner and Bazaar 2018 I want to express our Heartfelt Thanks to you! Many supported these dinners by coming to help at the Walkersville Fire Hall. Some prayed, others gave monetary support, and some brought requested items such as sugar for the pepper slaw. Some sewed, patted oysters, worked the buffet, baked, cooked food, cleaned floors, washed dishes, or crafted, and many of you shared other talents. We are grateful for each of you! Many tasks were accomplished for a successful bazaar and dinner! We sent around 419 flyers by bulk mail to our mailing list, while another 95 were notified by . Flyers were sent to area radio stations. Ads were also placed in the Frederick newspaper, and many phone calls were made. On Friday night we served 453 dinners, and on Saturday 415 dinners were served. 868 dinners were served total, 95 of which were carry outs. Tip jars on the tables netted $273. The craft table had a profit of $748, and the bake table s profit was $1,290! We used 90 gallons of oysters, at a cost of $60.00 a gallon. We are grateful for the use of the beautiful Walkersville Fire Hall, the fire company members who helped us, local Girl Scout troop #81128, Walkersville 4-H Club members, and Glade Youth group, and all of the leaders who gave many hours of work. 9 Second Mile Giving DECEMBER The Religious Coalition for Emergency Needs is a Frederick County non-profit that has been providing residents of Frederick County with emergency financial assistance for over 30 years. The Religious Coalition is the primary provider of emergency services on the basis of human needs, such as shelter, food, medical & dental calls, as well as prescription medications. Coalition networking programs also assist our neighbors in need to avoid eviction, prevent utility cutoffs, as well as funding the eight food banks. The Coalition also manages the Alan P. Linton, Jr. Emergency Shelter, which is the largest and only year-round shelter for the homeless in Frederick. JANUARY Second Mile Giving for January supports Church World Service s Blanket Program. Every $5 you give provides a wool or cotton blanket distributed by CWS to needy people around the world. Due to the continuing major needs in the disaster stricken areas, blankets are needed more than ever. Let s seek to exceed our numbers from previous years by sending even more blankets to the CWS! Our gifts to Second Mile Giving in February will make a difference in Iraq, Afghanistan, and South Asia, and other trouble spots around the world. Please indicate on the memo line of the check Blanket. THE FREDERICK SCHOOL OF RELIGION Learning for Life The Frederick School of Religion begin their classes on, February 25, It is a six-week series of nine classes which includes a wide range of religious topics and spiritual studies. The classes are offered on Mondays and Tuesdays in the afternoons or evenings. The 2019 classes will be held at First Baptist Church. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks. 9

Care Givers "God, our loving Father, help us remember the birth of Jesus, that we may share in the song of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and the wisdom of the wise men. Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world. Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting. (-Robert Louis Stevenson) As church bells call us to rejoice this Christmas, let's shout out more than just "Merry Christmas!" And as the new year unfolds before us, let's make it a daily practice to give the gift of kind words as you greet others, letting them know that you care. Kind words are gifts that you can give people whenever you want. Everywhere you go, there are people who could use kind words---offer them freely. Here are a few "gift suggestions:" "God bless you!" "How may I help you?" "Thank you!" "How are you?" "Welcome home!" "Great job!" "I love you!" "I appreciate you" Give a caring gift from the heart! Blessings! ---Becky D. 10

Mission & Social Action Committee Holiday Toy Shoppe to be held in December GIFTS DUE BY DECEMBER 2nd It s time again for the GVCS Holiday Toy Shoppe. That must mean the holidays are right around the corner. The Toy Shoppe provides presents for children of families experiencing financial difficulty. Glade UCC has supported this effort since it began. Last year the Toy Shoppe provided new clothes, toys and books to 155 children and gift cards and books to 88 teens. The program is supported by the churches, schools, business and individuals in our community. Be on the lookout for the mitten tree in the back of the church this month. Help yourself to one or several mittens. Do not wrap the gifts (you may donate wrapping paper separately) and attach the mittens to each individual present. There will be a large donation box, also in the back of the church. We will bring the gifts to the Walkersville Town Hall on Sunday, December 2. Thanks in advance for your generosity. Join us on National Wreaths Across America Day December 15, 2018 Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick at 12 p.m. Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, our mission to Remember, Honor and Teach is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 1,400 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad. Glade Church has donated two wreaths: one from Joan and Ray Hummer and one from MSA on behalf of our congregation. Our local sponsors are Homewood Auxiliary and Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick. We will honor the 400 veterans buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. 11

I am proud to report that the November Soup Kitchen was a rip roaring success. We had food donations and volunteers lined up well in advance and the preparation went like clockwork. The only thing we did not plan for was the record number of guests on Sunday evening. We ran out of food unheard of in the Glade tradition. We were raiding the walk-in refrigerator for extras to feed the multitudes. No one went away hungry, however, and the camaraderie and sense of a job well done were evident. Thanks to all who contributed. Our next Soup Kitchen will be January 20. Come and join us. We d love to welcome you to our team of helpers. Sign-ups will go out at the beginning of January. Soccer Balls to Syria Last year, the youth, in conjunction with other UCC churches in the area, led several sessions tied to the Catoctin Association s support of Lebanese Refugee Schools in Syria through our partner NESSL (National Evangelical Synod of Syria and Lebanon). We hosted a discussion on what it means to be a refugee in the Middle East and a get-to-know-you session with the Islamic Center of Frederick. The youth wanted to reach out to the students in Syria, and what better way than through the international language of soccer or football. They voted to spend $200 from their youth account to send to Syria for the purchase of soccer balls for the refugee schools. We salute our youth for this generous gesture. Keeping Up with Doug Steel Doug is a relatively new member of our congregation and an active contributing member of MSA. He fell ill shortly after joining the church so many of you may not have had the chance to know him well. He is quite extraordinary and we are lucky to have him. Adriane and Becky visited Doug and follow his progress on Caring Bridge. Caring Bridge is an on-line platform that enables friends to keep up with the status of an individual unobtrusively. Becky and Adriane will keep in touch with Doug via this link. If anyone would like to access this service, you can do so by going to caringbridge.org and typing in Douglas Steel, or just ask Becky or Adriane to update you. 12
