GLADE TIDINGS GLADE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST Our Lives Together November 2018 What Shall We Bring 2018 Stewardship Campaign The 2018 stewardship campaign has begun! The formal part of the campaign encompasses only three weeks, although behind the scenes it is somewhat longer. Regardless, it comes and goes pretty quickly as we set aside these three weeks to make a conscious effort to discuss and promote thoughtful stewardship. This is our third consecutive year to conduct a stewardship campaign, and as we have discussed the last couple of years, it is important to remember that stewardship is more than just giving of money. Yes, the money is important, but so is the time and talent that members of the church family share with the congregation singing, playing bells, working on one of our mission projects, helping on church clean-up day, volunteering to help fold this newsletter, etc., even just showing up on Sunday morning! Also, let s not forget that third component of stewardship -- the love shared with other members of our church family, as well as with anyone else in the larger Frederick area. Here is a thought copied from one of our articles from last year: Stewardship is an expression of love for God and love for others. Indeed, one way we express love for God is by loving others. Stewardship of time, talent, money, and other resources is a practical way to express love for God and love for others. ( What Shall We Bring Continued on page 2)

( What Shall We Bring Continued from page 1) This year s theme is What Shall We Bring and we think it is an excellent theme. Glade is in a period of transition while we seek an interim pastor, whose purpose it will be to bridge us to a new called pastor in a year or so. What shall we bring to this time of transition? The stewardship campaign can remind us that for our congregation to be healthy we all have to give something and we all have something to give. We do have to pay the utility bill to cover the energy we use to heat, cool and light the church. However, at this time of transition in the church, we would like to ask everyone to bring some of your own unique personal energy and light up the church with your presence. Given the short period of time the stewardship campaign covers, we know you may have questions that we did not anticipate. If you have questions, please share them with someone from the Finance & Stewardship Committee, Adriane Wodey, Bonnie Ogg, Connie Rough, Brooks Widder or Shannon Jordre. As we ve done the last couple years, we will conclude the campaign with a commitment service on Sunday, November 11th. Please plan to attend, and stay for coffee and dessert after the service that morning. The reviewer, Bob Ziegler had 16 recommendations within 7 categories. The Finance and Stewardship Committee members has already implemented some of the recommendations and will begin working on correcting processes in accordance to the rest of the recommendations. Mr. Ziegler presented a summary of the Financial overview to the Consistory at their October meeting. The members of the Consistory were very pleased with his presentation and overview. They felt he did a thorough review and pleased with his recommendations. Copies of the final report of the Financial Overview is available to anyone who wishes to review the report. Please contact Connie Rough for a copy at helloagn17@aol.com. The Finance Committee will soon begin working on the 2019 budget. Thanks to the Financial and Stewardship Committee members for all the work that went into conducting the Financial Overview. 3

Consistory Report Minutes of Glade UCC Consistory Meeting Tuesday, September 4, 7:00 PM Consistory Activities Bob Watson chaired the meeting, and also offered the devotion. Minutes from the July 17, 2018, meeting were reviewed and approved. New Business Society for Creative Anachronisms (SACA) would like to use the church for a Saturday meeting in October or November. We need to know the date, and make sure it doesn t conflict with Little David Ministries and anyone else who regularly uses the building. Shannon moved, Becky seconded that the group could use the building, if they can find a date that works, and contingent upon a review of their agenda. Regular rental fees would apply. We resumed our discussion of enhanced security, and re-keying the doors. The rear ramp door has been re-keyed, and new keys have been distributed. However, we still need to get the other exterior doors re-keyed and decide how to handle the interior doors. - 3 interior doors, with panic bars, are never locked, and we don t wish to re-key these doors - We do not have a list of master key holders, so should we replace the current master key system with a new master key system, or just get new exterior keys? No one knows for sure, but we don t think there are more than a handful of master keys to the old locks. - We need to develop a list of interior doors with lock, if we wish to get a new master key, and develop a list of people who would need the master key. Bob will make a list of doors to put on the master key system. We had a brief discussion of fireproof storage for historical documents. We will try to take an inventory of these documents, and then have further discussion at a future meeting. Shannon will talk to Connie and/or Brooks to see if they have an idea of volume and type of documents, their format, etc., that would be helpful in determining how to proceed. Adam would be willing to help with future work if we want to try to inventory them, scan for online storage, etc. (Shannon talked to Brooks about this at a Stewardship Campaign meeting, and we have a large fireproof safe, and it is plumb full of documents that we did not try to characterize, but which are thought of as important enough to be stored in fire-proof storage.) 4

We had a brief discussion about week-to-week pulpit supply for the next couple of months, as well as longer term, but the committees responsible for interim pulpit supply have done a good job getting things lined up for the next few months. Finance Committee Report Shannon reported for the Finance & Stewardship Committee. Robert Ziegler will be invited to attend the next Consistory meeting to share his observation. Treasurers report We reviewed the treasurer s report. Property Report Bob and Brooks are still coordinating on installing the new exterior light for the parking lot. The crumbling exterior stairs on the side of the building have been repaired. The landscaping looks good. Worship & Fellowship Committee Church in the park was planned for Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018 at 10:30 a.m., with a contingency plan to meet and have potluck at the church if it rains. (it rained) Marketing & Social Media Tammie & Becky maintain the Facebook and Website pages. Mission & Social Action Will serve at the Soup Kitchen on September 16. Church & Ministry Becky gave a brief overview of the interim pastor search. Currently the committee is looking at 5 candidates for the interim pastor. We d expect an interim pastor to be in place for about a year. On November 4th, during the worship service, we will acknowledge all members who have passed away since last All Saints Sunday, November 5, All the names submitted of our deceased loved ones will be published in the All Saints Sunday Program. Again this year, you will have the opportunity to light a candle in memory of your loved ones who are no longer with us. Please come and join us for this special worship service on November 4th. 5

Care Givers "You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody. You show that you are a letter from Christ...written not with ink but with the Spirit..." Does that scripture 'ring a bell' with your memory? It is one referred to by our guest speaker, Rev. Lana Walters, several weeks ago. Her message that day was "People Don't Care How Much You Know Until They See How Much You Care." In sharing those verses from 2nd Corinthians, she challenged each of us to consider this: Since your lives are a letter that anyone can read, how are people reading your life? When someone 'reads your letter' do they see how much you care? And speaking of letters (the variety that are written with ink on paper), my day is brightened when I discover one in my mailbox. So I would like to suggest that during this month of November, when our thoughts especially focus on thankfulness, why not write a letter to someone, expressing your gratitude for them in your life, letting them know you CARE! Blessings! Becky D. Birth Announcement Congratulations to Kara and Ivan Caprarola on the birth of their daughter, Haley Elizabeth Caprarola. She was born on September 27th, weighing 7lbs, 3 oz. and 19 3/4 inches long. Proud big brother is Dawson and grandparents are Brooks and Cathy Widder. 6

RECOMMENDED READING Gratitude.... Forgiveness.... Hope....Courage.... Kindness... These are just a few of the topics addressed in Jim Ball's new book, HAVE YOU TALKED VALUES WITH YOUR KIDS? The author, Jim, who is one of our Glade church family, wrote this book to bring parents and children together to think about important life values. The manner in which the book is written is designed to "challenge children to THINK about each value and answer stimulating questions about it." I have had the opportunity to read the book and found it quite interesting---and I think you would, too (especially if you are a parent or grandparent with young children)...if you'd like to preview it, please contact Becky Duncan to get the book 'on loan.' If you are interested in purchasing, you can see 'the author' or visit the website for more information: thehappythinkerspress.com [About the Author: Jim Ball's background is in the field of education, having taught children in public schools for 35 years We re getting ready for Glade Church s largest fund raiser!!
