IMPACT Our Lives Together for October 2014 Many people, Catholic and Protestant alike, recognize the important contributions of St. Francis of Assisi to Christian faith. He is especially known for the love he had for all creatures of the earth. Because he recognized the special relationship between human beings and their pets, many have cement statues of him in their gardens or yards; most such statues have him holding a bird or other small animal. Canonized a saint, he was given a feast day, and this year it falls the day before our outdoor worship experience at the Community Park (at the end of Kenneth Drive). What better place and day to bring those members of our families with us so that they may receive a blessing as they continue to bless our lives. Because it is also World Wide Communion Sunday, and we will be passing a common loaf to one another around a circle, we will have plenty of hand sanitizer available to use before partaking of the bread and cup and as a way to wash up before the picnic that follows. Bring Fido or Fifi and enjoy the day!

When We Forget Whose It Is It is unbelievable to me, as I know it is to you, that human beings not only have the capacity, but sometimes actually do, the horrific things we hear about on the news. The situation in Syria and Iraq have occupied a lot of space in my mind these past days as our country carries out military strikes against the various terrorist organizations in that part of the world. Our hearts are broken by all of it: the brutality of the terrorists and their total disregard for others, as well as the thought of more war, bombs, and the loss of life that comes from such. Sometimes, there are no good solutions only less bad ones. Yet, I wonder, if we remembered to whom this world belongs would it be this way? I ve hedged at it in the past, and others have preached on it before me, but it may be worth another attempt to get the message out (at least for us in our small corner of the world). Even as I understand there to be many dynamics that make my rather simple approach appear to be shallow, the truth remains that we are only traveling through this life and world and, at best, we are stewards; we are caretakers of something God has entrusted to us. And, added to that, we have a limited number of days to experience it. So, why is the world in the shape it is? It strikes me that we may have forgotten who we are and to who this world belongs. I am led to believe that each of us, at least from time to time, falls into the trap of thinking that we will be the first one to defy an end to life. Please pardon me for sounding

a bit morose here, but maybe if we (as in all of us) remembered that we are finite, and not invincible, we would want to live in ways that give life to as many lives as we possibly can rather than hoarding and storing for a day we will not see. It seems that if all of us who are able would rise each morning and figure out what we are going to do that day to make the world a better place, the world, in fact, would become a better place. I came across the following poem by Dawna Markova. Her words give voice to a personal belief. Perhaps you will allow the words to guide you, also. I will not die and unlived life I will not live in fear of falling Or of catching fire I choose to inhabit my days To allow my living to open me Making me less afraid More accessible To loosen my heart So that it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise I choose to risk my significance. To live so that that which comes to me as seed Goes to the next as blossom And that which comes to me as blossom Goes on as fruit. If everyone, in every place, dared to be better stewards, what a far more beautiful world this would be.

Dear Glade Family, First, let me thank you for the prayer shawl blanket. The gift really symbolized for me your acceptance, warmth & love you have for me and Scott & my family. I was thrilled to own one & cherish it. We used it to snuggle on our car journey out to CA. I want to thank you for being my church family for the last decade. The congregation was open to us and supported everything I did. I learned a great deal from so many of you in private moments and group settings. Thank You. We have found a wonderful UCC church out here that does many fun things. I am enclosing one thing they do here that is really fun a silent auction fund raiser to attend a party fashioned by a church member. 30 different parties go on a year. Let me say in closing that the new church is sick of hearing about all the great things Glade has going on. I brag on you all, community dinners, oyster dinners, youth group, SO-WAC, and WACKY. Love, Jan Borison P.S. We are all doing well & loving life. Our Church Family, We would like to thank all of you for your thoughts, prayers, cards, and calls on the passing of Connie s mom. It was so reassuring to know we have so many that love and care for us here at Glade. We are truly blessed. Love to All! Connie & Ron

To: Parishioners Glade United Church of Christ A sincere thank you to all Glade United Church of Christ parishioners who participated in the Back-To-School Project. Your generous donations of school supplies, coupled with those of other organizations and individual in our community, enabled GVCS in partnership with CASS, to provide 195 students of 79 families in our local area with school supplies to begin the school year. In addition to the above direct assistance, school supplies were also distributed to the Walkersville schools, Walkersville feeder schools, and Thurmont schools for use by the guidance counselors to assist other students in need of supplies. We appreciate your willingness to be a part of the community wide effort to help those in need in our community. Dan Boos HIP, HIP, HOORAY!! I'm so thankful for each of you who cheered me through my recent hip replacement surgery and recuperation. Your prayers, call, cards, s and visits meant so much to me! Special thanks to my husband, Leo, & son, Rich, who shared duties of being nurse, chef, & housekeeper during my weeks of recovery. I'm so very thankful for so very much! Blessings! In God's Love, 'Bionic Becky' P.S. My sister, Mary, also wishes to thank you for your prayers and cards as she experienced recent surgeries. Over the years she has come to know some of you through her visits to 'Girls Nite Out.' Your caring notes really touched her and gave her much needed encouragement through a very difficult time. She felt God's love through Glade's 'adoption' of her by mail--- THANK YOU!

It's Autumn- School is back in session...it's been a few years since I've been in a classroom (I recently attended my 50th high school reunion---whs Class of '64) but I still have the dreaded memory of facing a surprise 'pop quiz.' As I think about it, it seems to me that God gives us 'pop quizzes' everyday--- opportunities arise for us to share some precious time and God's love with someone in need of a caring touch. What is my answer? Do I respond with kindness and a generous heart?...or do I fail to respond at all? Ask yourself, "If God were to give me a report card, what grade would He, Our Teacher, give me?" [NOTE: The Care Givers Ministry Team will meet Saturday, October 18th, at 9:30 a.m. to share breakfast and conversation around the table at Barbara Fritchie Restaurant Mark your calendar now---see you then!???s Contact Betty B. or Becky D.] WE ARE A LITTLE BEAR BEHIND with our BEARS THAT CARE project... Thanks, Glade Church, for donating bears that will be shared with someone in need of a 'bear hug.' Within the next several weeks, the program will begin, as the bears join us in the pews...we are currently getting the bears ready for their new homes. If you have bears that you would like to give, please bring them in by next Sunday so that they can be a part of this caring ministry. The bears can be new or gently used---please place them on the sofa in the social hall. Thanks for 'bearing with us' as we initiate this new ministry coordinated by the Care Givers Team.

Glade UCC Christmas Pageant Participants Reunion How many of you can remember being part of the Glade UCC Christmas Pageants? Many can remember being dressed as sheep, shepherds, angels, Mary and Joseph. We are looking for pictures of past Christmas pageants as far back as you can find pictures. A committee is being formed to put a picture program together. Dig through all those photo albums and see what pictures you can find. We also want to invite anyone who has even been in (or watched) the Christmas pageants. Plans are still being finalized, but start looking for pictures that you could share. If you have digital copies send them to Patty Green, churchviewacres@aol.com. If you have non-digital photos, you can drop them off at the Church Office. Connie will have a box to collect them in. If you can identity the year of the pageant, please note it with the picture. Please mark the picture, if you can, so we can scan the pictures and return them to the owners. This will be a fun time to reminisce with each other about the pageants and talk about the memories that the Christmas pageants have brought to us at Glade UCC. Please have all pictures sent or to the Church Office by November 23rd. The reunion will be held in December, date to be announced.
