Commodore s Comments The Fourth of July celebration was a big success. I wish I could take credit for it but I can t. All I did was make a few phone calls. Other members did most of the work.

They followed through and had a nice portrait made by Rick and Theresa Milberger of Dixie Signs. Rick and Theresa then turned around and donated the portrait.

2 Commodore s Comments The Fourth of July celebration was a big success. I wish I could take credit for it but I can t. All I did was make a few phone calls. Other members did most of the work. Where do I begin thanking people? It all started when Pat and Floyd Hauffe came up with the idea for a portrait of our Founding Family, the Richards. They followed through and had a nice portrait made by Rick and Theresa Milberger of Dixie Signs. Rick and Theresa then turned around and donated the portrait. Steve Blazier, who has wanted a real flagpole for a long time, asked about one for the new clubhouse. He was disappointed when told it was not in the budget. Disappointed but not discouraged. He spearheaded a donation campaign and came up with enough funds to buy the flagpole and pour a five-foot deep base to mount it on. Then he rounded up the manpower to have it put together and raised. Betty Holland agreed to smash a ceremonial bottle of champagne to launch the MSSC with our new clubhouse into the future. She agreed to break the bottle but not to give a speech. That is why you had to suffer through mine. By the smile on her face I think she enjoyed the experience. Audrey Parrish decided we needed a plaque to honor Horace s heroic efforts on behalf on the club. Trying to keep that project from Horace and the space on the wall clear was difficult but worth it. Ken Renfro volunteered to take care of the cooking and so many members brought food, we were still munching on it the next day. It turned out to be a great day. Thank you all for coming together and making it happen. 3 rd Friday Socials In case anyone needs an excuse to visit the club, Commodore Rick and Kathy have graciously volunteered to host a new regular event.

4 3 rd Friday Socials In case anyone needs an excuse to visit the club, Commodore Rick and Kathy have graciously volunteered to host a new regular event. The 3 rd Friday Socials are an excellent reason to enjoy the fellowship of other members, experience one of the gorgeous sunsets, or just snack or eat a meal in beautiful surroundings. The last social was well received. Again, it will be a low-key affair. A box of wine and a few hors d oeuvres. Just friends coming together to relax and enjoy. Time: 6:00 PM Place: MSSC This would be a good time to show off the clubhouse to friends or prospective members. Bring an hors d oeuvre to share and the beverage of your choice. Kathy and Rick will probably prepare dinner at the club, so bring something to eat and a side dish to share if you would like to join them. They can crank up the BBQ if you want to grill. Officer Spotlight In November, the membership will be electing several officers to serve for a period of two years. In an effort to prepare to cast an informed vote, this Editor thought it might be helpful to highlight the duties of at least one officer each month. This month: Recreation Officer The By-laws describe the duties as such: Shall administer or appoint committees necessary to handle all social events and activities designated by the Board and the MSSC calendar of events. Shall have the responsibility for maintaining supplies for kitchen, bathroom, cleaning, and recreational activities. While listening to the Sellers family, along with current members, reminisce about races past, I was struck by how much fun land and water activities could be for whole families. Silly starts and even sillier rules during the course of the race, encouraged the use of water guns, man overboard practice, and the use of motors at times. Members who have served in this position have spoken about games for the family volleyball, croquet, horseshoes, ring toss, and board games, to name a few. Other activities included water balloons, watermelon seed spitting contests, egg toss, and relays of various kinds. At a time when we are experiencing a wonderful increase in our numbers, it would be good to consider planning fun activities for the whole family, in addition to those targeting people who enjoy being on the water. Lining up volunteers to help with games and food for all of our events would certainly benefit all the members and guests attending. It would be great to have someone responsible for securing volunteers to prepare dinner for regattas as well as clean up afterwards. Working on a regatta can be an enjoyable experience with the proper leadership. Check the Upcoming Events to verify scheduling. On the 17 th, Kathy will challenge all comers to a rousing game of Jenga. Pat Hauffe, Editor

Members who participated in the flagpole raising included military veterans who represent the Army, Navy, and Air Force. They included Don VonTress, Bob Parrish, Steve Blazier, Dave Seborg, and Paul Jacobs. Audrey Parrish provided the helium balloons so that the kids present could participate in the flag raising in a special way. Ken Renfro was at the Farmers Market at 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning to get the best corn, tomatoes, okra, and squash he could to prepare his special side dishes for our meal on the 4 th. Ken also shopped and cooked all the hamburgers, hotdogs, and brats for our eating enjoyment. This member frequently gives of his time and talents to provide excellent meals for us. Thanks must also be given to Helen s & Nolan s daughter, Robin, for the two hydrangeas planted by Bruce Richards in honor of their parents; to Jan & Ray Clemmons for the monkey grass around the septic tank planter; to Pat & Floyd Hauffe for the lantana to disguise and protect the septic tank; to Peggy & Paul Jacobs for putting fresh white paint on the pavilion conversation group; to Nolan Richards for painting furniture inside and outside, and to Chris Francis for volunteering in all areas at all events and who keeps the plants watered.
