For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Luke 6:38 Beloved BLC, It has been such fun to read your testimonies of what BLC means to you. Many of you of all ages have responded with joy about the different ways that participating in this community of faith has blessed you. One of the things I love about these responses is the eagerness with which you all have shared them. I did not have to twist one arm and yet, the very first Sunday, the offering overflowed with blue cards sharing thanksgiving of this wonderful place. The main goal of this practice has been to remind us of the importance of BLC and to make a tangible connection to that worth with our financial support. We are closer to our goal of meeting our faith based budget than ever, but still have some ground to go. If we do not make our faith based budget this year we will have to scale back our ministries and opportunities for Help us make sure that is not necessary. If you already give, consider giving more. It does not have to be a significant increase, if everyone gave a little it would multiply quickly. If you do not currently give, consider regular giving to BLC as a spiritual practice. You will be amazed at the blessing and joy you receive from this generosity of heart. If you, like me, have trouble remembering your checkbook sign up for giving with our mobile app, GIVE +. Bradbury and illustrated by Roxanne Grinstad This book will be enjoyed by families as you read through it together and see the story brought to life by Roxanne's beautiful illustrations. Roxanne is the wife of one of our former Pastors, Dick Grinstad. She generously donated it to us. We also have her book Wildflowers of Holden which she wrote and illustrated. 4 JOSEPHINE CARING COMMUNITY A Caring Community As I am writing today, I am coming home from a Yee (my family name) Association gathering in San Francisco where our US headquarters is located. When the Chinese came to this country, Family Associations were established to help foster family ties in foreign land where families lived much more spread out. However, my main reason for this article is not to talk about family associations but to share a particular experience during this trip. You see, my parents are experiencing some health issues. My Dad has Alzheimer s and my Mom has spine issue that causes her balance issues while standing and walking. I like to support our Family Association gatherings but one of my main reasons for going on this trip was to give my parents assistance so that they could participate in this gathering. The problem came on the second day of the gathering when my parents had to be in two places at the same time. My Dad had to be at a delegates meeting and my Mom wanted to take a tour of San Francisco with the other non-delegates. How was I supposed to keep both of them safe? I can t express how blessed I felt when a group of women, on two separate occasions, offered to take care of and guide my Mom helping her on and off the bus and holding her hand when she needed to walk during the tour on this day and the next. This allowed me to be with my Dad at his meetings to help him get where he needed to be, at the right time, and to not get lost in the process. Everything went tremendously smooth my Dad was able to fulfill his duties as a delegate of our NYC Family Association chapter my Mom was able to have a great experience on the tours while making some really good acquaintances and I was able to allow both of my parents to participate in an Association that has meant so much to them for so many years. My heart is warmed when I see this same caring community surface at Josephine. I noted, just before I left for that San Francisco trip, the care of this one therapist guiding one of our rehab folks down the hall pushing them to stretch their abilities, because everybody wants to go home yesterday, while at the same time having their hands ready behind them in case they would happen to lose strength. In another occasion, while I listened in on one of our volunteers conversing one-on-one with one of our memory loss residents, I noted how patient she was

in the conversation, all the time looking with loving eyes, and staying focused in the conversation until she found something to joyfully connect with in the shared experience.

Another time, I noted how another volunteer had the ability to see one of our Suites residents with so much respect that he is taking the time to learn Norwegian from her. And still another time, I was so moved by one of our childcare daycare workers at how lovingly she was able to sit among our kids, beautifully smiling, actively listening to them and engaging them in conversation that I stopped her in the hallway later that day and made sure I let her know that she had a real gift. And lastly, another time I heard a Suites resident coming to me and telling me to check in on her tablemate because she ate very little during dinner. No doubt that there are many more times of special care that my one pair of eyes are not privy to but I thought that I d share these few with you as they registered with me this month. 6 BISHOP ELECTION Rev. Kirby Unti, Synod Bishop, Northwest Washington Synod Article from The Spirit, September 2018 Friends, Our 2019 Synod Assembly will include a Bishop Election in the Northwest Washington Synod. The Synod Council has appointed David Swartling to shepherd the process. You will be hearing more soon about the upcoming timeline which runs from November to May. I want you to know it has been a real joy and a great honor to have served the Office of Bishop for the last five years. It has afforded me a perspective of the whole church that I otherwise would have never had. It has been a term blessed with the opportunity to spend time with so many wonderful people who make up the church. I have been privileged to meet our ecumenical partners and to break bread with our neighbors of faith. I have been gifted with attending two National Youth Gatherings and to witness the work of our synod s Children, Youth and Family Ministries. I count as one of the greatest blessings the wisdom that has been shared by our Native American sisters and brothers who hold the creation in sacred relationship. Under my leadership I have placed a strong emphasis upon collaboration between congregations and members of the roster. The emphasis includes strengthening our ministry relationship with partners both within the Lutheran community and beyond. I take seriously Presiding Bishop Eaton s teaching that we are church at our best when we are church together for the sake of the world. It has also been important to me to see us engage the neighborhood in new ways. All our congregations, in one way or another, serve the local neighborhood through feeding, sheltering, clothing, and providing emergency help. Some of our smallest congregations do so on a scale that is very impressive for their size. I applaud all our congregations for this outreach in Jesus name. My emphasis has been on taking the next step in neighborhood engagement - which is not about providing services, but about deep listening to our neighbors for the purpose of joining them in building stronger communities. 7 subtle, but it is a major shift in both how we see our neighbors and relate to them. I have tried to elevate the place of our specialized ministries as they provide a high level of care where some of the greatest pain exists in the community. I have also been about the work of our Capital Campaign, Because of You, trying to increase the resources that we have, to form new leaders and to support the work of mission on the territory of our Synod into the future. We set a very ambitious goal of 3 million dollars and the fruit of our efforts need to be realized this next year. This Synod has been well served through two significant staff changes. The Staff has committed itself to being responsive to the needs of those we serve. Having a good staff has meant I have always looked forward to coming to work and have felt confident when I am away. This summer I have been in deep discernment as to whether I will allow my name to go forward for a second term. It is a call that is very hard for me to say no to because of the blessing that it has been to serve you. I have reached the conclusion that I am not going to consider a second term. I feel my shelf life has expired and the Synod is deserving of a leader more gifted to serve the church in these times. There is no doubt in my mind that God will raise up the right leader who is likely to be both culturally and technically more fluent than I. I will end my term with deep gratitude to the people of this Synod and with a commitment to set the table well for the person who is to follow. It has been a privilege. Grace, grace, grace!!!
