1 Mullins Messenger Mullins United Methodist Church 4 North Mendenhall Road Memphis, TN November, 2018 Extravagant Generosity Dear Friends, Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity (2 Corinthians 9:11). When we are generous in sharing our financial resources with our family of faith called Mullins UMC, we will see great things happen. Among them, we will see our children and youth be taught about Jesus. We will see songs of praise carried upward to heaven through our music. We will enjoy the company of our friends when we eat and play together.we will expand our hands across the globe by helping the needy.yes, we will be enriched! As we enter this time of reminding ourselves that we, as Christians, have a need to give generously to the work of the church, I invite you to join me in financially supporting the work we do here. Without your extravagant generosity, our work diminishes. Yet, I believe the more we give, the more we can do in the name of Christ. Let s be extravagantly generous, and experience the enrichment granted by the grace of God. Peace, Scott New Banners Prepared For All Saints Sunday Nov. 4 The congregation will observe All Saints Sunday on November 4, and new banners of remembrance will be introduced. Families of the Mullins members who will be remembered during the worship service have been invited to join us as special guests for this time of commemoration. (See list of those to be recognized on page 6.) 1
2 Prayer Beads Program Guests are invited to the UMW general meeting at 10:30 am November 13 in the Fisher wing parlor. Brenda Carson will lead a program on Prayer Beads, a focusing tool for prayer in many religions. The practice most recently has been applied to the United Methodist Church by a Methodist minister s wife, Kristen Vincent, author of A Bead and a Prayer and Another Bead and Another Prayer. Beads and books will be available for sale to benefit the Maanza a Leza ministry. A great lunch in the Fellowship Hall ($4) will follow the meeting. All are welcome! St. John s Soup Kitchen Volunteers from Mullins are needed to prepare and serve the meal at the St. John s United Methodist Church soup kitchen on Saturday, Nov. 17. Please contact Ginny Wilcox if you will be able to participate in this meaningful service opportunity! Minutes Available Mullins members who wish to see minutes from Administrative Council meetings may leave requests in the church office. 3 Maanza a Leza God is good, all the time! Even though the Maanza a Leza (Hands of God) ministry based at Mullins has previously made most of its profit from jewelry sales at Memphis Annual Conference and the Mullins Crafts Fair (which were not available for sales this year), our profit has been continual. Just last month $400 was deposited from sales at Kirby Pines Carousel of Shops, St. Marks Crafts Fair, Concord Academy, and Mullins PDO and from jewelry repair at Trezevant Manor and Mullins. When our last teacher s house is finished in Sechebeya, Zambia in the foreseeable future, our new goal will be another block of three classrooms. The estimated cost for this goal is $25,000. Maanza a Leza also continues to sponsor students from Sechebeya who qualify through standardized testing to go to the neighboring town of Choma for high school. The cost of sponsorship for each student is $350 to $400 per year. The Crossroads Class at Mullins sponsored Ben Mutenda through high school and has helped with some college expenses. If your Sunday School Class or you would like to sponsor a high school student, please contact Muka Kambol, Debi Gray, or Brenda Carson for more information. ---Brenda Carson Notes of Appreciation Sunday Meals-to-Go Order delicious Sunday meals-to-go!
