1 Mullins Messenger Mullins United Methodist Church 4 North Mendenhall Road Memphis, TN October, 2018 New Worship Arts Liturgical Banners This year for All Saints Sunday, November 4, we will honor our church loved ones who have died in the past year with the unveiling of two beautiful new liturgical banners designed and created by Allison Webb. The new large banners are inspired by and made in the style of our stained glass windows like the small individual banners we have used in years past. The new banners will replace the individual banners as a practical solution to the problem of no more available wall space. In addition, we feel this will be a right and respectful way to honor those we have lost as described in the first verse of Dr. Brian Wren s hymn, This is a Day of New Beginnings, which reads This is a day of new beginnings, Time to remember and move on, Time to believe what love is bringing, Laying to rest the pain that s gone. What a blessing! Since we will no longer be using the small individual banners, we would like to make those available to the families of those who have died in past years. If you would like the banner with your loved one s name on it, we would love for you to have it. Just call the office to let us know. ---Worship Committee Acolyte Training Oct. 21st We are looking to expand our group of acolytes! Anyone third grade and older is welcome... especially adults! Why should kids have all the fun??? Serving as an acolyte is a sacred duty dating back to at least the third century. As an acolyte, you will assist in lighting candles, handling offering plates, holding a worship book, and other things to aid in the worship of God. Training will be Sunday, October 21 at 2 pm in the sanctuary. We hope to see you there! 1

2 October Communion Offering For UMCOR Hurricane Relief The October 7 th Mullins Communion Offering will be given to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to support victims of Hurricane Florence. Please leave your donation on the altar rail or turn in to church office, designated for UMCOR. Join the Celebration! 10 am, Saturday, October 6 th Avon Park (near Pinewood Entrance) Maanza Opportunities Several opportunities for October service are offered by the Maanza a Leza ( Hands of God ) jewelry ministry based at Mullins. All Maanza proceeds benefit childhood education in Zambia. See below: *Craft Night Bead for Maanza at 6 pm Friday, Oct.19, in the Fisher parlor, while enjoying fellowship and snacks with other crafters. Please invite your friends and neighbors to bring their pets and join us for this special time together as we give thanks for the animal friends in our lives. We are grateful that several members of the Mullins Community Orchestra will add their talents to the festivities again this year! This is a great activity for all ages! (Rain location, Mullins Gym) *Millington Fall Sale Help sell jewelry at the UMW Fall Luncheon and sale at Millington First UMC Saturday, Oct. 20. Muka Kambol will present the program From Muka s Eyes. *Trezevant Manor Jewelry Repair Assist Brenda Carson with jewelry repair at Trezevant Manor Thursday, Oct.25, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. *Fall Clubhouse Fundraiser Donate soup or help set up for the lunch fundraiser during the Mullins Fall Clubhouse Sunday, Oct. 28. 3 Highland Heights Ministry The next fifth Monday Mullins ministry at Highland Heights UMC will be October 29. If you are available to help serve or prepare lunch for the homeless and hungry, please contact Melissa Johnson. Monetary donations to help defray the cost of the meal are always appreciated. Cub Scouts Are Back! A brand-new Cub Scout Pack 75 is in the building! So far, we have 10 boys and look forward to adding to the roster. David Goodman is leading the pack as Cubmaster. If you wish to be involved or know a child K-5 who might be interested, the meetings are in the Mullins Fellowship Hall on Mondays at 6:30 pm. Directory Update A supplement to the 2018 Mullins UMC pictorial directory is nearing completion. Please submit any new contact information to the church office if you have not already done so. Thanks to all who have cooperated and contributed. Recycling Requests When using the new receptacles for aluminum cans outside the Fellowship Hall, please rinse out your cans before recycling them. We don t want to attracts insects or other pests. Members also are encouraged to rinse and save drink cans at home and bring them to the church for recycling. (Call the office for information about our collection site off the Walnut Grove parking lot). Special thanks to Charles Griffin, who transports the church cans to recycling centers on a regular basis and collects funds for the Maanza ministry! Dear Friends, I am happy to report that attendance has been up in the Children s Department. We added a new staff member to lead the Infant & Toddler classroom. Her name is Mackenzie Messer and she comes with lots of good experience from our Parents Day Out program. Welcome, Mackenzie! We also have a wonderful opportunity for more joyful servants to join in the volunteer rotation! Please prayerfully consider saying yes to serving in the Children s Department a few times per year. Congratulations to the Williams family, who celebrated baby Wally s baptism Sept. 16. September was also a busy month for our older elementary students (9 12). Evie, Joy and I attended the older elementary retreat at Lakeshore Sept th, Campin Out with Jesus: Hiking the Trail of Discipleship. Looking ahead to October, Blessing of the Animals will be held at Avon Park Saturday, Oct. 6 th, and our next Community Clubhouse for all ages will be Sunday, Oct. 28 th. The Clubhouse also will kick off our annual drive for warm blankets and adult clothes, which our Youth will sort for the homeless guests at Manna House. 3

4 Mullins Mailbox Tamora Jackson, Ed. D. (seated) and her daughters, Kristin and Taylor Mullins Chapel Shines In New Cancer Print Ad October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the beautiful Mullins Chapel is showcased in a print ad for Baptist Cancer Center which debuts in the October Memphis magazine Race for the Cure issue. The ad highlights cancer survivor Tamora Jackson and her fight against breast cancer with the help of her steadfast faith and her medical care team at Baptist Cancer Center. Tamora volunteered to tell her story in hopes that other women will be informed that regular mammograms are important, and especially genetic testing if there is a history of breast cancer in a family. A photo team visited Mullins in late August to shoot the picture for the ad, and Mullins member Ginny Wilcox, a manager of Communications for Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation, accompanied the group for the session. Thankful for Kindness To the Ministers & Members of Mullins UMC, My family and I are very thankful for all the kindness, love, prayers and support offered to us after the passing of my young brother back home in Zambia. Your comfort and love eased the pain and you warmed our cold hearts with your love. Thank you! You are truly the hands and feet of our Lord Jesus Christ. With love and gratitude, Bet Hendon Fortnite Detox A program to help boys navigate an increasingly digital world, Fortnite Detox, will be presented at 7 pm, Thursday, Oct. 4, in Siena Hall at St. Agnes-St. Dominic School. Dr. Leonard Sax, noted physician, psychologist, and author of Why Gender Matters, will provide practical strategies for what it means to be a scholar and gentleman of today. 5 Mark Your Calendars! Sunday, October 28 th Fall Clubhouse Celebration! Invite your friends to Sunday School and come worship with us at 10:50 am. Stay immediately after for our Fall Clubhouse Celebration in the Fellowship Hall. These quarterly gatherings allow people of all ages in the Mullins Family Household of Faith to invite guests and come celebrate and participate in the four pillars of our joyful servant plan of worship, study, service, and witness. Maanza a Leza will be accepting donations for lunch to use for building teacher housing and student education in partnership with the people of Sichebeya, a remote village of subsistence farmers in Zambia. Family Ministries will provide a Blessing Bag assembly station and games for adults and children of all ages! (See sign-up sheet in Hall of Apostles for donating Blessing Bag items.) We will also begin collecting warm blankets and adult clothing for Manna House. See flyer in Mulllns church office for more information. UMNC Thanksgiving Changes Baskets of food will not be distributed for Thanksgiving by United Methodist Neighborhood Centers this year. Instead, if you are interested in contributing, you are requested to purchase $25 gift cards from Kroger or Walmart and give them to UMNC before Nov. 15 for distribution to families in need. Your generosity will be appreciated. You may call UMNC if you have questions ( ). Community Orchestra Early Fall is a busy time for the Mullins Community Orchestra. In addition to several members sharing talents for the Mullins Blessing of the Animals in Avon Park Oct. 6, the group will perform at the Pink Palace Crafts Fair at noon Saturday, Oct. 13, in Audubon Park. On Sept. 22, the group performed in concert with the Longview Heights choir in north Misisissippi. 6
