1 Mullins Messenger Happy Mullins United Methodist Church 4 North Mendenhall Road Memphis, Tenn June 2018 Looking to the Future with Hope... Dear Friends, At the end of this month, I will begin my second year as your Senior Pastor, and I m really excited about it. We have seen a lot of things develop and grow in this short amount of time. Just to name a few---a renewed emphasis on our vision and mission, a fresh way to minister to families, enhancing our worship, continued work in strengthening our finances, hiring a new staff person, an intentional effort to evaluate and streamline our programming, and the list goes on. As we look to the future of Mullins, I hope we can see further growth and increased ministry. I hope we can trust Jesus to be with us as we move forward, because I believe that more great things are to come. Our lives together will be blessed, and joyful servants can be made. I won t promise that it will be easy. We will have to wrestle with the limitations of schedules and financial resources. We will have to to set priorities and work hard. There may be things that we attempt and fail. However, I believe the promise that we can do all things through God who strengthens us. No matter what we dream; no matter what we try, our direction must be that of God s, not our own. How do we get and remain in line with God s direction? We worship. We study. We engage in service. We witness. The more these practices become part of who we are, the clearer God s direction becomes. Again, I am excited to be living into the future of Mullins with all of you. Wherever God leads us; whatever shape our ministry may take; and whoever walks across our path, it is good to know that the Risen Christ is with us, even to the end of the age. May His spirit dwell in us to open our eyes, ears, and hearts for the blessings to come. Peace, Scott Family Ministries Introduces Community Clubhouse (A Vacation Bible School Alternative) A new idea from Mullins Family Ministries will be introduced during July as an alternative to the traditional Vacation Bible School. Called Mullins Community Clubhouse: A Sunday of God s Love, Service and Fun, the concept will kick off after worship July 29th. All ages are invited to gather for food, fun, service and meaningful fellowship. (See attached flyer!) Camille

2 Father s Day Father s Day is Sunday, June 17 th, and members of the congregation are reminded of two traditions that will be observed at Mullins this day. A huge thank you to Scott Shelby, our fairy godfather, for providing a portable air conditioner for the church office while we waited for our new system to be installed. Thank you so much for your generosity and thoughtfulness! Grateful for Support Thank you for your prayers, cards, calls and healing thoughts I hope to be back in full swing soon, and be able to be at church regularly again. I appreciate you all. Diana Bradberry Appreciation Mia and I thank everyone for supporting our lemonade stand on Sunday morning. We made $156 for Le Bonheur Children s Hospital. Evie Johns New Flag Pole Will Giles from Scout Troop 75 has completed installation of a flag pole on the church grounds. Thanks to all who supported his David Campbell Memorial Eagle Scout project. New Members! We warmly welcome two new members who joined Mullins May 20 th. Brystol Burns was baptized and joined by profession of faith. Zachary Stratton joined by transfer from another denomination. Salute to Graduates! Congratulations to Miller Johnson, son of Melissa Johnson, who graduated from White Station High School May 20. He plans to attend the University of Memphis Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality. We also celebrate the graduates of Concord Academy, the Mullins PDO program, and White Station Elementary (our Adopt-a-School partner). Dr. Scott Alford spoke during the Concord commencement in the Sanctuary. (1) Hawaiian Shirt Day For several years, many men of Mullins have worn Hawaiian shirts for Father s Day, and it has grown to be a fun display and celebration. As the saying goes, Wear what you dare! (2) Women s Chorus Women from the Chancel Choir and congregation will serenade the men of the church on Father s Day. As Tom Machen said in a recent to the congregation, We did this last in 2014 and had a great time together and your singing was simply beautiful! Ladies, please plan to be part of this fun and memorable event. There will be two practices in the choir room at 6:30 pm June 6 and June 13, and a warm-up at 10 am in the Sanctuary June 17. Music will be a version of The Prayer by Carole Sager and David Foster combined with Lead Me, Lord. Maanza Ministry Brenda Carson is offering jewelry repairs for Mullins members to raise funds for Maanza a Leza. Visit her table June 10 in the Hall of the Apostles. Brenda works with fashion or costume jewelry, and she will quote a price before any work is done. The next Maanza jewelry sale will be June 8 in Sewanee, TN at Debi Gray s DKG teachers meeting. All proceeds go toward educational needs in Zambia. Craft Night The next Craft Night will be at 6 pm Friday, June 15, in the Fisher Wing parlor. Bring a fun project, a snack to share, and a friend! You also may help bead Maanza jewelry during this time or ask Brenda Carson for a kit to bead at home.

3 Kambols Visit Kansas Jacques and Muka Kambol and their daughters will spend the summer in Kansas, while Jacques completes an internship and a ten-week independent study toward his degree at Memphis Theological Seminary. He will be working in the Great Plains Conference, exploring leadership with clergy and lay people. To see Muka s recent TV interview about her family s journey from Zambia to Memphis with help from the Maanza ministry, go to Camp Conquest: Maanza a Leza at Save the Date! Mark your calendars for the Independence Day/Church Birthday celebration scheduled for 6:30 pm Sunday July 1, in the gym. Great BBQ, entertainment, and Tommy Scruggs fireworks! Call the office for reservations. (Donations for fireworks greatly appreciated!) Family Life Committee Emergency Kits The Mullins United Methodist Women will gather July 17 to assemble kits for the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Donations for supplies ($15 per kit) will be greatly appreciated. If you wish to help, make checks payable to Mullins UMC (designate for UMCOR kits) and turn in by July 9. Women from Grimes United Methodist Church will be invited to join us in this service project. Shared Ministry Discussion Dr. Victor Dingus, from Vitality and Transformation Consulting, visited Mullins and nearby United Methodist Churches during May. At the request of District Superintendent Deborah Smith, he is working with Highland Heights, Grimes, St. Stephens, Good Shepherd and Mullins to discern ways these churches can possibly share in the workload of ministry. Children in Worship, Part II Jesus said, Let the little children come to me Matthew 19:14 After two Family Friendly worship services, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Thank you, Mullins family, for being flexible while we learn and grow together! Right now we offer the Family Friendly worship service on the first Sunday of each month to help families worship and participate in communion together. The other Sundays, children in 5 th grade and under are invited to leave the Sanctuary after the children s message to attend Children s Chapel. After Children s Chapel, most of the youngest children return to the Nursery and Toddler classroom. Elementary age children are encouraged to return to their families in the Sanctuary. Our mission is to help the youngest children feel included and an important part of worship and the church family. Studies prove when children feel included at an early age, they are more likely to attend Church as adults. The youngest children can only learn through positive experience what it means to be a part of worship and a church family. So, the transition from nursery and activity tables to sitting in the pews with friends and family is not a clear line. Rather, it is a flexible moving target of sorts. Each child is different. Each family is different. So, we want to offer the above as a general goal. We encourage you to begin teaching your children how to worship. They will learn by mimicking what you do while sitting next to you in the pew! That may mean moving with them from your pew to the activity tables when they get fidgety. Or they may sit in the pew and mimic you some of the time or use the contents of a worship bag some of the time. And that is okay! Please use any combination of activity tables, worship bag, Children s Chapel, or return to Nursery as your family s worship needs grow and change! The Mullins family is here to help and support you and your children. May God continue to bless you and your family! Camille

4 Music in June June 3---Our Introit is PRECIOUS LORD, TAKE MY HAND, arranged by Jack Schrader. It begins in a traditional a cappella choral style verse and moves to a slow, steady gospel groove. Our anthem is THE IMAGE OF GOD by Craig Courtney, an affirmation of our value in the eyes of the Creator. June 10---AND CAN IT BE, which we debuted earlier this year, beautifully expresses Christ s immeasurable love. Using Charles Wesley s beloved text and Dan Forrest s new setting, this tender work captures the wonder of Christ s sacrifice. June 17---On Father s Day, choir and congregational ladies join to sing THE PRAYER, popularized by artists such as Celine Dion, Josh Grobin, and Andrea Bocelli. The Chancel Choir will also offer BOW THE KNEE, with words and music by Chris Machen. Both anthems are arranged by Tom Fettke. June 24---We will repeat IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL, arranged by Craig Courtney. The story is well known of Horatio Spafford penning these words as he crossed the Atlantic at the spot where his four daughters had perished during the sinking of the Ville du Havre. Finally, the Chancel Choir will sing the first Sunday in July and participate in our church birthday/independence Day celebration before our summer hiatus and the Summer Music Series begins. God bless you and your family, and Mullins Church.
