1 Mullins Messenger Mullins United Methodist Church 4 North Mendenhall Road Memphis, Tenn May 2018 Welcome to our newest staff member... Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to introduce you to Kim Perkins, our new Financial and Membership Administrator. Kim holds a BBA in Accounting with experience in both for-profit and non-profit organizations, including First Tennessee, International Paper, and Woodland Presbyterian. Additionally, Kim brings with her an incredible servant s heart as she has been active with her children s schools and PTAs. Kim is married to Lewis, CFO with Paragon Bank, and has two children, Joshua (18) and Sara (15). Welcome to the Mullins family, Kim! Peace, Scott Pastoral Appointments Worship with Children First Sundays in Sanctuary Jesus said, Let the little children come to me Matthew 19:14 Children are always welcome to worship in the Mullins sanctuary, but a special emphasis has begun, starting with Easter Sunday, to include children in the worship services on the first Sunday of each month. Rather than spend time in the nursery or attend Children s Church, children are invited to spend the entire service with family in the sanctuary. A special family area up front with activities for children will be available. Camille It s official! Both the Rev. Dr. Scott A. Alford and the Rev. Camille Bradley will be returning to Mullins UMC for the coming church year. Appointments are announced in connection with the Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church in June.
2 Mullins Mailbox Grateful for Cards Dear Friends, To all the members of Mullins who sent me a birthday card or an for my 93 rd birthday, THANK YOU very much! Although I have not been in attendance at church for over three years, I think about it all the time and miss my friends, as well as the Methodist services. Elmer Wrobley Thank You, Friends Dear Friends at Mullins, Thank you so much for all the love and affection you have shown me over the years! Your friendship has been a blessing to me. I love the people of this congregation and will miss you all very much! A very special thank you to everyone for the wonderful Love Offering and the notes you wrote to me. I am humbled by your love and generosity. Geraldine Finley Continued Appreciation Dear Friends, We appreciate your continued prayers for my son Norm. I know your prayers are contributing to my healing following recent surgery. It is wonderful to be part of a caring church family. Barbara Kercher Memphis Annual Conference In Paducah June 3-5 Representatives from Mullins UMC are preparing to attend the upcoming Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church June 3-5 in Paducah, Ky. This year s theme will be See All the People. Spring Potluck May 6th The Mullins Spring Potluck will be held Sunday, May 6 th, immediately following the 10:50 worship service! Bring a dish or two to share, and be sure to invite family and friends to join us for worship and the meal. Members of the Family Life Committee will be in the kitchen that morning to take dishes and keep them cold or hot for the lunch. It will be a time for delicious food and great fellowship with the church family and friends. ---Family Life Committee Craft Night is held in Room 117 each third Friday of the month at 6 pm. Bring a project that interests you, a snack to share, and a friend! The next gathering will be May 18 th. (If you would like to help with beading or other tasks to support the Maanza a Leza jewelry ministry during this time, Brenda Carson will be there with supplies and instructions.) Maanza Jewelry Repair Brenda Carson will begin offering jewelry repairs for Mullins members, similar to her repair ministry with Martha Harmon at Trezevant Manor, to raise funds for Maanza a Leza. Watch for her table in the Hall of the Apostles. Brenda works with fashion jewelry, not fine jewelry, and she will give a quote before any work is done. Muka s Story Goes Global The story of Muka Kambol s journey from Zambia to Memphis, including support from the Maanza a Leza jewelry ministry based at Mullins, has gone global. An article in the Jan. 24 conference e- News was picked up by United Methodist News Services and Africa University. Muka also was interviewed in April for Christ UMC s We Believe in Memphis program on Channel 14.
3 Family Ministries Thanks to all who helped assemble Blessing Bags for Family Ministries during the successful missions lunch fundraiser! We are looking forward to evaluating and implementing some exciting ideas presented during the Orange conference Rev. Scott and I attended April in Atlanta. Stay tuned! ---Rev. Camille Lamplighter Study The Lamplighter Class invites visitors to join us at 9:45 am Sunday in the gym (first room on the left) for coffee, donuts and Bible study. We are using the International Sunday School Lessons/Uniform Series, which enables Christians across the globe to study the same Scriptures on the same day. The series presents an overview of the Bible in six years, not in a study of Genesis through Revelation but by arranging texts under topical headings. Give it a try! Memphis Adoption Scandal Inspires UMW Program Theresa Jennings will be the guest speaker for the UMW General Meeting at 10:30 am Tuesday, May 8, in the Fisher Wing Parlor. Mrs. Jennings is a survivor of the adoption scandal involving Georgia Tan and the infamous Tennessee Children s Home Society in the last century. The scandal involved children taken from their families and placed for adoption at a price. Current interest in the topic has been stirred by a novel on the New York Times Best Seller List, Before We Were Yours, by Lisa Wingate. After the meeting we will gather for lunch ($4) in the Fellowship Hall. Visitors welcome. Ideas for Mother s Day May 13th (1) Men Joining in Song An All Men s Chorus featuring men from the chancel choir and congregation will serenade the women of the church on Mother s Day! Men, please plan to be part of this fun and memorable event. (We will have only one practice, at 7:30 pm Wednesday, May 9, in the Choir Room, and one warm-up at 10 am in Sanctuary just prior to event). ---Tom Machan Breaking News: This just in! Dr. Scott Alford will make his Mullins musical debut playing drum kit with the All Men s Chorus! (2) Women Wearing Hats The men of Mullins have worn Hawaiian shirts for Father s Day for several years, and it has grown to be quite a fun display and celebration. Let s start a new tradition on Mother s Day by wearing fun and festive hats, whether it s a petite fascinator or something with a full brim. ALL ages are invited to celebrate the moms in our congregation by wearing hats! ---Luanne Hearn Salute to Graduates If you know of a Mullins member who will be graduating from a high school, college, or grad school in 2018, please notify the church office. We also salute all graduates of Concord Academy, White Station Elementary, and the Mullins PDO program. Shapard Invitation A retirement celebration for Dr. Stephen C. Shapard will be held at 2 pm May 20, at Bartlett UMC. All are invited to share in the celebration with Steve and his wife, Julie.
4 Music in May The Chancel Choir s anthems in May include: May 6--- Thy Perfect Love, by British composer and conductor John Rutter, a beautiful pastoral melody set to a 15 th Century text that relates to our Scripture from John 15, the Great Commandment. May 13---The Mother s Day anthem by our special All Men s Choir is Walk by Faith, an original blues-gospel-spiritual setting by Joel Raney. Also, a double quartet will offer the Southern gospel piece He Never Failed Me Yet arranged by Keith Christopher with a solo by Loyal Murphy. Watch for Dr. Scott Alford to make his musical debut playing drum kit with the All Men s Chorus. May 20---For Pentecost, Holy Spirit, Holy Ground ---arranged by Mark Brymer---is a medley of three classic choruses: Spirit of the Living God, Holy Spirit Rain Down, and Holy Ground. It will serve as counterpoint to the unusual Baba Yetu by Christopher Tin from the video game Civilization IV, an adaptation of The Lord s Prayer in Swahili. We are pleased to feature Jacques Kambol as soloist. The beauty of the Swahili language accents our scripture from Acts 2. May 27---On Trinity Sunday we debut Praise Him! ---a setting of the Doxology---by Craig Courtney. The 1709 text by Thomas Ken incorporates Psalms 145 and 150. Musically yours, Tom Machen Sunday Meals-to-Go Delicious Sunday meals-to-go will be available three Sundays in May.
