3 I would like to introduce SALT Not the salt that preserves our food or brings out flavor. In the context of Youth Ministry, SALT is our acronym for the Student Leadership Team. This nine member team has the responsibility of preserving the integrity of youth ministry and adding flavor to all programs for youth. SALT focuses on leading like Christ in focusing on hospitality and servant leadership. They meet monthly to examine our ministry, discuss cultural trends and advise the adult leaders in our ministry. The following students have been selected to participate as student leaders for the current school year: Bruce Boney, Gracie Durham, Will Durham, Summer Kelso, Hayden King, Alex Millspaw, Josh Millspaw, Paloma Shrauder and Summer VanGastle. Please support them with your prayers and encouragement. ~Margie Ligon This passed spring I applied to be a member of the youth leadership team. It interested me because I wanted to further my relationship with God and learn about leadership. One of the things the leadership team does annually is a retreat to plan for the year. This year we went to Mount Shepherd retreat center. Along with our planning sessions that we did were games like hide n seek, uno, and other card games. We also went on a hike, and to the lake. On the last day we did team building exercises that taught me so many things. We had an activity where we all had to go through hanging ropes while holding onto a pole, which taught me to give 100% of my attention to important things 100% of the time. In our final activity we were put in a maze that we couldn't get out of unless we asked for help, it showed me that even if you are a leader it is ok to ask for help and you can't do everything on your own. In our planning sessions I learned from some of my fellow leaders that being a leader doesn't mean shouting commands at people, you can lead by example which reminded me of something St. Francis said, Preach Jesus, and if necessary use words. This retreat taught me alot about myself. And I feel like I know how to be a good leader because of it. ~Hayden King
4 First United Methodist Church, Thank you so much for all the prayers, concern and cards you have given me during my last operation. Hopfully the last. 5 CHILDREN S AND YOUTH CHOIR UPDATE Are you ready for some great news? We have 21 children in Alleluia and Jubilate Children s Choirs this fall, and they are already excited about the Christmas musical (Wise Guys and Starry Skies)! We are blessed with a wonderful group of volunteers, and the children are preparing to sing in worship for their first time on October 7th at 11:00 a.m. The children s choir can always use volunteers to assist with choir rehearsals in sitting with children or helping with preparation for the musical (costumes, staging, etc.). If you are interested, please contact Elizabeth (elizabeth@fumcbelmont.org) or Jennifer Kelso (jkelso01@yahoo.com). Youth Choir is off to a great start! They areactively preparing to sing in worship in October, and are preparing their drama roles for the Christmas musical. There are also plans underway for the Youth Choir to take a tour of Western NC in June, 2019 and take their music to churches and senior living facilities, and also enjoy fun recreation as a group. Did you forget to register? It s not too late! Contact Elizabeth Davis for more information. Youth Choir meets Sundays 5:00-6:00 p.m. OF RALLY DAY Each year, Rally Day rolls around and we welcome children and youth into a new Sunday school year, sometimes with new classes and teachers. This year was no different in that we kicked off the new year with meet and greets for parents and children. Our celebration this year didn t end after Sunday school or even after worship. Rally Day continued on the back lawn with Family Life and the United Methodist Men preparing a picnic on the lawn for all to partake in a time of fellowship. Bounce houses and music added to the excitement and energy.
