1 Chaska Moravian Church A Word from Phil Schramm, Trustees President WWJD Yes, that is the question. What WOULD Jesus do? At one time wearing WWJD bracelets was kind of a fad. I thought it was odd to put one s faith into a four word cliche imprinted on a rubber band to wear around the wrist. But after my dislike for things faddish waned, I thought of it as a pretty good question. That s especially now when we are entering a time of change and some tough decisions. I know from my time in engineering that change brings tension, fear, and stress. People display their stress many ways including, depression, anger, personal attacks, prayers. They also respond with efforts and excellence beyond what they have ever done before. Given our current situation with declining membership, limited finances, and the city or state wanting to acquire some or all of out property, it is exactly the right time to ask WWJD. Would he be the remarkably placid man we see in some videos? We know Jesus could be angry as in Get the away from me satan and even violent as shown when he was tearing up the money changers. We know he liked a good party as in turning water to wine. He was also incredibly strong and brave. He knew what happened to dissidents in his time. But he was a dissident anyway. We know he could show incredible empathy as in the stories of healings and the woman at the well. So what would Jesus do? When we contemplate that, what does it tell us? It suggests we should: Be passionate while listening carefully. Challenge all assumptions. We ve always done it this way doesn t mean it is the best way. Pray. Pray for discernment. Pray that someone wiser or with a better answer comes in to the picture. Pray for patience for those who are running out ahead of our comfort zone and pray for those who s discomfort slows us down making us think deeply about what we are doing. Love everyone. Love our friends, love those that aren t. Love the Other. In all things love. If we truly love others, don t we do all the other things when they are needed? So as we look at opportunities and challenges that are coming before us, the changes that may stress us, let s recommit ourselves to being a loving congregation in all we say and do. Maybe the answer to the WWJD rubber band with is really one word: Love.

2 CHURCH PROPERTY UPDATE At the September meeting of the City of Chaska Library task force, it was determined that the location best suited to house the new Carver County Library in Chaska was the site of the current Chaska Moravian Church. Pastor Mike was approached by the city planner and asked to see if there was an avenue for the city to acquire the entirety of the property currently owned by the church. Pastor Mike shared the information with the joint board, the district board, the provincial elders and the entire congregation and asked for their thoughts, prayers, and ideas about this potential opportunity before the church. At the October 16 th meeting of the same task force, the decision was made that there was a superior site to the Moravian Church site and their energy shifted in a new direction. The task force will offer a recommendation to the Chaska City Council at the end of October. We will know more in November, but as of today, the likelihood of a new library being built at our location is somewhat less than it was a week ago. Obviously, there are a lot of moving parts involved in this decision and we can only wait until the city gets a clear direction on where they are headed and respond at that time. CHURCH COUNCIL Our annual Church Council meeting will be after our regular worship service on Sunday November 18. The Church Council is the governing body of the Chaska Moravian Church. Everyone who is a current member of the Church is an eligible voting member of the Church Council. We will elect Church Elders and Trustees for 2019 and pass a 2019 budget. Our Church Constitution states that any business issue of the Church may be brought to the Church Council and that, any new item of business to be considered should be submitted in writing to the Secretary of Church Council (Tammy) prior to the meeting. These items need to be received by November 12 th to be included on the agenda. We currently have enough people who have come forward to serve to fill the open seats on the two boards, but we will gratefully receive any additional nominations and add them to the ballots. Recently, we have been incorporating our Church Council meeting into our worship because even though it seems like a business meeting, the business of being church is the same as the business of serving the Lord and therefore an appropriate part of our worship. This year we will conclude our morning worship, take a brief break and convene as church council to make sure there is ample time for discussion. There will be a brief State of the Church presentation and our Treasurer Arvin Zwart will present the proposed budget for We will have budgets prepared and printed by Monday the 12 th for those who would like more time to study the document before church council convenes. We will have an educated guess as to what we can expect for income in 2019 that will be a part of the presentation at church council. Pastor Mike is the Chairperson of the Council and Tammy Riesgraf will serve as Council Secretary. Dates? Coats will be collected through November 10 How?
