2 St. Paul s to start Recovery Ministry Last year during our Bicentennial Anniversary, we announced that we would like to establish an outreach ministry to benefit the community, much like our spiritual ancestors did in their days. After much prayer and deliberation, the Vicar, Wardens, and Vestry have authorized the establishment of a Steering Committee to explore ways to address a range of concerns regarding the issue of addiction affecting millions of Americans, including members of our Parish and our broader community. The Recovery Ministry will include programs, events, liturgies, and other means to provide education for prevention and support for addicts and those affected by addiction. The Recovery Ministry will be Christ-centered, but will not be a prayer group, bible study group, therapeutic or counseling group. The Ministry will be available to anyone who presents him or herself in need of help for himself/herself or a loved one, regardless of their belief or unbelief but are open to experience the healing power of Christ. Initial activities contemplated will be providing recovery pamphlets and other appropriate educational material, joining the Recovery Ministry of the Episcopal Church, establishing liaisons with similar groups in our community, and designating one Sunday devoted to healing with a reception and discussion. Future activities would be dependent on interest generated and funding available. Of course, being a sub-committee of the Vestry, all programs will be done with the authorization and approval of the Vicar, Wardens, and Vestry. Volunteers will be needed to make this ministry successful. Many congregations have established such a ministry, and find that it is the most effective outreach ministry, often leading to a 10-20% growth in membership in addition to spiritual growth. Recovery ministry can produce lay ministers from the congregation who discover a renewed sense of purpose. The size of the congregation is no barrier to beginning a recovery ministry. It does not require professionally trained individuals; only energetic individuals interested in helping other individuals. If you re interested in volunteering, please contact me. Even if you re intimidated by this topic, we could use people with skills such as fundraising, grant writing, publicity, events planning, and administration. Or, if you simply wish to help out financially, that would be appreciated. Fernando Soto To My Parish Family Sam and I want to say thank you for all the prayers, texts, visits, cards and support. It sustained and lifted us during the hard times and kept us moving thru the good times. We are very blessed to have such wonderful friends. Sam is still recovering from her surgery and there are some bumps in the road, but she has a positive outlook and wants to move on. Thanks to you all!!!!! Sam & Audrey Smith

3 Mission and Outreach Now through November 4th we will be collecting clean warm clothing for Taking It To The Streets that serves the homeless in Poughkeepsie. Many of us will be bringing out our winter clothes soon. Please consider donating any of your unneeded men's and women's clean warm winter clothes, boots, gloves, hats, socks, warm blankets, and sleeping bags are most needed. Socks are a huge necessity as they serve a dual purpose for both feet and hands. Ruth Anderson serves over 150 people in Poughkeepsie area. We continue to collect hotel toiletries, single serving pop lid cans of tuna fish, fruit cups, and healthy snack bars for these very needy folks. A collection box is in Memorial Hall. Informational Gift Bags We have been handing out welcome information gift bags to adults and small prayer bears to children that join us for worship. The purpose is to educate first time visitors about St. Paul's & Trinity Parish and what we have to offer. Since the beginning of August, we've handed out nine welcome bags and one prayer bear. Once again this year we will be donating Thanksgiving Food Baskets for families at the Astor Head Start program at the Mill Rd. Elementary School. 4 The 39th Annual Northern Dutchess Crop Hunger Walk will be on October 28th at 12:30pm. This year's walk will take place in Red Hook starting at St. Christopher's School on Benner Rd. Won't you consider supporting one of our walkers to help fight hunger locally and world wide. To date, the walkers include Melissa and Deb Gruntler, Marlene Silveira, and Leigh Knickerbocker. Below are a few facts about the Northern Dutchess Crop Hunger Walk. From St Paul's & Trinity Parish has raised $11, the second highest out of 10 churches that have participated past and present. Over all The NDHCW has raised a total of $170, of which $44, went to the 5 local food pantries in Red Hook and Rhinebeck. 5 A Baby Shower was held in honor of Michelle Hoffman and Mike Thicke who are expecting their first child on October 23. We look forward to a new little one in our congregation. Michelle and Mike have decided to wait for the birth of their child to learn whether they are having a little boy or girl. Best wishes to you both.
