In late November we will have church/charge conference. It will evaluate our holy business of 2017 and give some clue how to manage the business of God for The second is my vacation for two weeks which starts from the last Sunday of November. One week is for vacation to be able to meet my sisters and friends in South Korea and another week will be my fifth visit to Laos. November is the season of harvest to store good grains in the storage and to collect and burn the bad ones in the yard. In this season we count what we gain and what we lose. Traditional lesson and wisdom of songs is to Count many blessings and name them one by one! But what about if we remember only those? What about if our hearts are filled with someone and something lost and are not satisfied with the coming of Thanksgiving, as we don t have many resources of thanks to God and neighbors? What about if we lost fruit and vegetables by hurricanes and lost houses and jobs by fires and if we lost our assets and businesses by way of recession and what about if we lost health in spite of costly care and cure? Traditional word of comfort is from Habakkuk 3:17: For though the fig tree blossom not nor fruit be on the vines, though the flocks disappear from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet will I rejoice in the Lord and exalt in my saving God. And then the prophet began prayer and supplication to the Lord, God, my Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet swift as those of hinds and enables me to go upon the heights. What do we, holy family of St James, gain and what do we lose in 2017? How and what way will we give thanks to the Lord in this real life? Going back and forth from Appleton to Oneida Nation, I see fields of yellow and white corns vacant and empty and turning leaves fallen by the wind. Though we could find many covers to hide ourselves last summer, now we can t hide ourselves as we lose our natural covers of woods and large leaves. By the law of gravity, they fall to mother earth. It may seem that in this season God talks to us, Jump! I am ready to catch! We fall to God by the grace of God. All creatures gain in age. Isn t it God s gift and grace? Pastor Dong Su 1

Let me know if you have any questions, or need assistance. Please do your best to have them completed by early November. Once the Ad Council meeting is set I will send you notice. Thank you, Deb Advent Candle Lighting Advent readers needed starting December 5th. If interested please click here, to contact the church office. The Advent wreath is a symbol of watchfulness and increasing joy as we anticipate Jesus birth. The wreath s circular shape symbolizes eternity, or life without end. The candles remind us that Jesus is the Light of the World he brought light and life to a dark world (see John 1:4-5). On each of the four Sundays of Advent, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, we light a new candle. As the light grows, so do our hope, joy, peace and love. Thursday April 19 to Sunday April 22 Thursday April 26 to Sunday April 29 Thank You Veteran s On Veterans Day, we honor men and women who ve served and sacrificed in one of America s armed services. On November 11, 1918, America and her allies signed a truce with German leaders, ending World War I. In 1919, President Wilson decided the United States should remember with gratitude the end of that war and honor military members by marking Armistice Day, or truce day. In 1954, Congress changed the name to Veterans Day, honoring veterans of every era. Veterans Day highlights our country s quest for peace, justice and freedom throughout the world. Followers of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, pray for unity among all nations and for the day when nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore (Isaiah 2:4, NIV). So this November 11th, be sure to thank the veteran's in your life for their service. Are you looking for a gift for someone who seems to have everything? Consider the gift that keeps on giving, a weekend with God. The Walk to Emmaus is an experience of Christian spiritual renewal and formation. It is an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ in a new way as God s grace and love is revealed to you through other believers. It begins with a 3-day short course in Christianity. Christ will meet you where you are, no matter where you are on your Christian journey. For more information, contact the church office by clinking on the link or call

9 For the Kids What is Hanging of the greens? Many churches, including St James, decorate the church in preparation for Christ's coming, which includes hanging greenery traditionally associated with everlasting life. Greens such as cedar for royalty, fir and pine boughs for everlasting life, holly symbolizing Jesus' death and ivy representing the resurrection are used. St James will be Hanging the Greens after worship on Sunday, November 26th. We hope to see you their as we prepare with anticipation, the coming of the Christ child. 9
