Some interesting points at Meet the Lee s has been some information shared by us and the participants: name, place of birth, occupation, special reason for their membership at St James, and hobbies, interests, and events during brief and long life journey. Those topics are what I share and converse with those whom I visit with. Talking about them, time flies and I to end visitation with singing hymns and word of prayer, expecting visitation again. Meet the Lee s seems to be multi-purpose. First, people can meet Linda and me away from the pulpit, sitting next to them. Not with pastoral robe, but with casual clothes. We become the part of St James family. Second, members can find skills and gifts, weakness and strength of a pastor and they can think how to complement his weaknesses. Third, listening to some hopes of St James, I can change my plan for the church or add certain programs or re-form current programs. As time together is limited, we need to make the hay while the sun shines. The initial response to the ministry of Jesus in Galilee by the people was: All were amazed and asked one another, What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him. (Mark 1:27) A new teaching with authority to revive, renew, revitalize that we as well as the Galileans have been looking for since the start of the church. For this we meet together and listen to one another. But something new my small body doesn t have, but Jesus, who became flesh and made his dwelling among us (John 1:14), has: through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race. The role of the pastor is important, but we, pastor and congregation, follow, imitate, and believe Jesus is our life source, light, and something eternal. Pastor and congregation dig our own well by prayer, plan, and practice day and night at homes and at the church. Meet the Lees goes on, as we meet the members and nonmembers of the St James community. Together with Jesus, we ll meet the needs of St James and our community. And walk and work with Jesus. 3 Charge Conference News The date of our Charge Conference this year is Tuesday, November 21 at 6:30p.m. The place is TBA. Please mark your calendars. We have been informed that this will be done as a circuit, so we will need to have our preparation of conference forms prepared and voted upon at an Administrative Council meeting a week or so prior to the Charge Conference meeting. All forms must be filled out on line this year. Required forms need to be filled out by Trustees, Finance, SPRC, Lay Servants and Pastor. They can be found at: praise.wisconsinumc.org/chargeconf/bze2bfy2 When you go to this page it will walk you though what you need to do if your browser is not compatible. Although the forms must be filled out on line, please print them out and give to the church office so that we have them for future reference, and for all to review at Administrative Council. Let me know if you have any questions, or need assistance. Please do your best to have them completed by early November. Once the Ad Council meeting is set I will send you notice. Thank you, Deb What is World Communion Sunday? World Communion Sunday is celebrated on the first Sunday in. World Communion Sunday reminds us that in communion we are receiving the body of Christ that we may be the body of Christ in the world. World Communion Sunday reminds us that all who partake in this Holy meal are in communion with God and one another. Some congregations take this opportunity to celebrate communion in ways that lift of the diversity of the body of Christ around the world. This can be heard in the different songs that are sung or even in the different languages spoken. No matter the way that World Communion Sunday is celebrated, it is a reminder that there are no political, social or national borders in the body of Christ. The United Methodist Church takes this moment of remembering the global church to take up a special offering on World Communion Sunday. What is given to this special offering benefits World Communion Scholars as well as Ethnic Scholarships and the Ethnic In-Service Program. The Work of God is Done by Giving The work of God is to be done by the people of God giving according to the will of God. (Sutherland & Nowery, The 33 Laws of Stewardship.) This is as good a definition of Stewardship as there is. Whenever there is something to be done in the Kingdom of God, the followers of God are the ones who are called to do it. This may be leading prayers, meeting in small groups, working in the community garden, balancing the church s books, inviting our neighbors to worship, visiting shut-ins, or serving the poor. We do much of this work of God through or supported by our local churches. Worship is the most visible, perhaps, but many other activities are equally important, such as spiritual formation, congregational care, hospitality and outreach, or missions. Moreover, the local churches support the works of the conference and denomination, as well. In Wisconsin, this includes ministries like congregational revitalization and new church starts, or health and welfare ministries and, elsewhere, ministries such as Africa University. Without the people of God giving according to the will of God, none of these things would be happening. Sometime in the coming year, and for most of us, this fall, we will be called upon as God s people to give generously to support financially God s work in our local churches and beyond. This is a recurring call to discipleship that we all share through our connection in the Wisconsin Conference of the United Methodist Church. Jim Wells, Wisconsin United Methodist Foundation 3
4 fest Thank your everyone who has donated or volunteered to help with fest on September 30th... Help Needed for Salvation Army Henderson Thank-you to all who generously contributed towards our mission trip to Henderson Settlement in Kentucky. We have reached our goal of $3, This money will be used to purchase the supplies for our projects. We will be replacing 5 double windows, 6 single windows, 6 interior doors along with some painting of various trim and floors. This work will be on a house that is on the Henderson Settlement campus that is used in the summer for volunteers. When the volunteers have a safe and comfortable place to stay, then more volunteers are able to come and go out in the community to help people with home repairs and maintenance. We leave Sat. Oct. 7 th returning Sat. Oct. 14 th. The following people are going on the trip: Gary & Diane Linstad Jim & Gay Casey Ken Kempfer Tom & LouAnn Graf 22, 2017 If you can help, contact Rich & Bev Stewart at or richbevstewart@gmail.com We will need help from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rich & Bev Stewart Frank & Heidi Guerts Lloyd Eggert Fellowship Hospitality Is Getting a Make-Over! You Can Help! This ministry gives members and visitors a chance to forget the weekly grind and to expresso how the week has gone, or spill the beans on what is new in life. By taking each Sunday and dividing it into bite-sized pieces, it will give us all something to snack on to improve our mission outreach to one-another and our visitors. There won t be a latte for any one person to do under this new plan. In an effort to simplify fellowship time we are splitting up the duties for each Sunday. We are looking at 4 categories of help. 1. Coffee preparation - come early and make coffee, perhaps make more as needed. 2. Hospitality Host - someone to be willing to set out donated treats and pour some juice for our younger members. 3. Donation of treats - people willing to donate treats of fruits, vegetables, or baked goods (bought or home-made) 4. Clean-up warriors. We know that many are busy with before worship preparation. But if you might be available to help wash off the tables, be sure the coffee pot is turned off, dishes are put in the dish washer and run it, and turn off the lights, that would be a terrific help! It is felt that by splitting up these duties, we will be able to continue this vital ministry to St James. The current hospitality teams have done a wonderful job, but some would enjoy an extended break, which gives others the opportunity to be involved with this ministry. (You also have the option to do all four categories if this is what you wish.) We are also looking for subs for each of the spots, so that when needed our new regulars can have a Sunday off if needed. Please let Deb, in the church office, know of your interest in helping, which Sunday of the month (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th ) and which of the 4 duties above best fits your gifts. With this new way of enjoying our fellowship each week it should be a piece of cake to accomplish. For your Sunday morning convenience there is also a sign up sheet at the treat table in fellowship hall. We have a few people who have already said, Yes, I can do that! How about you? Without you, fellowship time could disappear as fast as your favorite treat. Together, let s see what s brewing, as we stir up the current format for a new recipe. 4
