1 Newsletter July 2018 Vol. 16, No. 7 My St. Mark s family- Have you ever wondered what Jesus family must have been like? Did Mary have a favorite? What was it like to have the Lord as a brother, and how would that affect your faith and discipleship? We are going to spend the month of July getting some Brotherly Advice as we walk through the Book of James. James was the brother of Jesus, and he served as a leader in the early church after Christ s resurrection. The letter from James is filled with wisdom and good advice to the early church, and to us! James calls us to grow, calls us to action, and calls us to truly live in to our faith in Jesus Christ. So join us on Sundays throughout July, as we grow in our own faith journey by listening to some brotherly advice! Strength and Wisdom, Pastor Justin INSIDE THIS ISSUE NEWS /ANNOUNCEMENTS 2 CHILDREN S MINISTRIES 6 BIRTHDAYS/ANNIVERSARIES 7 YOUTH 7

2 news announcements news announcements news July, 2018 Summertime! If you are traveling, I pray that you have a safe and happy vacation, whether to visit relatives or head off on a new adventure somewhere. May you celebrate the people you share your time with and make many good memories. If vacation is not in your plans, I pray that God will bless you, whatever is going on in your life. God s peace be with you, however you plan to spend your summer. Peggy Lootens Oberammergau 2020 Since 1634, the most famous Passion Play in the world has taken place in Oberammergau, Germany. Every 10 years, over 2000 villagers of the area put on the play about Christ s suffering, death, and resurrection. In just 2 years, 2020 will mark the 42nd production in the last 380 years. Pastor Justin will be leading a pilgrimage to see the play and visit sites in Italy in July of After spending 2 days in Germany and seeing the Oberammergau play, we ll travel to Italy: Venice, Florence, Assisi, and 3 days in Rome where we ll visit the Vatican, catacombs, and many other ancient and Christian sites. If you would like more information or are interested in going on the trip, please talk to Pastor Justin or drop him an at: justinwhite@vaumc.org Scholarship Recipients The Round Table Sunday School class is pleased to announce the awarding of the Monica Stevens Scholarship to the following: Katie Farris, Skylar Gay, Pahl Pappas and Nick Francis. Congratulations to these fine young people!! Adult Fellowship Luncheon There will be no Adult Fellowship Luncheon this month as it falls on the 4th of July. Enjoy your holiday!! 2 Financial Update The wonderful missions and ministries of St. Mark's are only possible because of your support! Through the end of May, St. Mark s YTD receipts were $167,395. The YTD expenses were $174,739. This leaves a shortfall of $7,344. Let s all do our part to help meet our expenses. Potential Tax Savings For Seniors 70 Or Older If you are 70 ½ or older currently or will reach that age in calendar year 2018 and have an IRA that requires you to take Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) this year, PLEASE READ ON. By contributing some or all of your RMD (maximum $ 100,000) to a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) you can reduce your RMD and Gross Income by the amount you contribute to Saint Mark s UMC and/or any qualified organization (501 (c) (3). This action reduces your taxable income and offers you an opportunity to provide a contribution for 2018 and/ or allocation of your contribution to the Church s 2019 General Fund or Building Fund or any of the ministries of the Church. For further information concerning a QCD we suggest you read details associated with IRS Tax Form 590 B and talk with your Financial Advisor and Tax Preparer. Tom Wenrich ( ) and Chuck Kessler ( ) can share with you their experiences relative to this QCD subject. Scrapbooking Fellowship Since the third Thursday in July is VBS Week, the Scrapbooking Fellowship will meet Thursday, July 26th from 9:00-2:00. All are welcome to join us even if you have never scrapbooked. Bring your pictures and we will get you started. Bring your lunch, beverages and any snacks you might want to have. 4 news announcements news announcements news VBS is for Adults, too! An Adult VBS study will be offered at 6:00 each night of VBS! This group will be led by Norman Craft ( ). Please let Norman know if you plan to attend! UMW Book Selection The UMW has a library of books in the bride s room. These can be read for credit in the UMW reading program. If you are not a UMW member and would like to read one of these books just sign one or more out in the large binder available and return it after you are done. A new selection to be added is Born On Third Base by Chuck Collins. He is among the 1 percent of ultra wealthy Americans. He gave up his wealth and is dedicated to reversing the huge inequality gap that exists in America. He advocates that the 1 percent at the top of the income scale must work to bridge the income gap to produce a fair economy in America. He offers solutions to bridge the economic divide. News from TAME Many thanks for all that helped to make our Doughnuts for Dad a success. We thank all of you that baked goodies, bought goodies and helped with the event. We also thank Julie Gladu for donating the lovely afghan for our raffle. At this writing we don t know who the lucky winner will be on July 1st. It could be YOU, that is if you bought a ticket. We have set the date for our Rise Against Hunger meal packing event this fall. Mark your calendars for September 29th and I hope you will plan to be there. We need your help to pack approximately 30,000 meals to send to some of the hungry and food insecure in the world. We hope to have some breakfast items available at the event as packing meals can make you hungry. If you would like to donate a dish call Karen Sledd at This month's 5th Sunday Fellowship will be held on the 4th Sunday of the month! You're invited to join us for our first Pickin N Lickin Event on July 22nd. Easy Pickins will play while we enjoy hotdogs, chips and all the fixings. TAME will be providing ice cream for which you may give a free-will donation to support their ministries to feed the hungry. This promises to be a fun family event! Kits for Conference What a GREAT 2018 response! Once again we came through -- this time with a total of 108 KITS -- consisting of 100 School Kits and 8 Health Kits. Our KITS were delivered to our Virginia Annual Conference in Hampton Roads on June They were then trucked to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, Louisiana, to be shipped where they are needed most - here at home and all around the world. Thanks to the many hands that provided completed KITS, supplies to make them, and worked so faithfully to sew the tote bags, assemble the Kits and then box them up. Thanks also to Norman Craft, our Conference Delegate, for delivering our 14 boxes to Conference. If you had wanted to help, but did not have time to put a KIT together you can still help! UMCOR does request that we provide $1 per KIT to help with processing and shipping. If you would like to make a donation, please make your check payable to St. Mark s United Methodist Women, earmarked KITS. If you have any questions, please see Mona Tolley ( ). Thank you so much for your continued support of this important mission project! 4
