I am very thankful for all of you, my Brothers, having your friendship and support in all that we do to make our Valley grow. Your hard work and dedication make our Valley what it is, thank you. I am, also thankful for my family and my wonderful wife and the good Lord that provides for us, and so much more. The Veterans truly appreciated all of the support that was shown to them at the October Stated Meeting dinner; it was our pleasure to have them join us. I am very sorry to have missed the meeting but I had to take care of my family, however you were in the competent hands of Ills. Robert McNamara, our Assistant Personal Representative, thanks Bob. Our Reunion Class was well attended and all of you that took part, from the Degree Masters to the cast members, and all of the hard workers behind the scenes, you are the ones that make the class the success that it is. My congratulations to our new Masters of the Royal Secret, welcome. Our November Meeting will be held on the 3rd. We will be voting to change the by-laws to read Orange County Scottish Rite. Please be present to vote on this important matter. The first reading for our new line for 2015 will be read that night. We have several important items that night, it sure would be a shame for you to miss all of it, so I will be looking forward to seeing all of you there. We will also have our Cap and Ring Ceremony for our new Masters of the Royal Secret after the Stated Meeting in the dining room. Please show your support to our new Brothers and be in attendance for this and remember your wife or significant other is invited to attend this ceremony. Our vittles for the Stated Meeting will be turkey and all the trimmings. Please be sure to call the Scottish Rite Office and make your reservations for dinner. Fraternally, Bob McNamara, 33º and Lloyd Clayton, 33º Acting and Assistant General Secretaries Masonic Enlightenment WHERE DID THE SCOTTISH RITE ORIGINATE? The Scottish Rite actually came to the United States by way of France. There is evidence of "Scotch Masons' Lodges" dating back to 1733 in England; and there were also predecessors such as the "Adonhiramite Rite" (ca. 1781) which included many degrees which ultimately became part of the Scottish Rite. Yet, it was not until 1763 and the creation of the "Order of the Royal Secret" by Stephen Morin of France, that the ritual we practice today began to coalesce into a form recognizable to a modern Scottish Rite Mason. 5 Scottish Rite News Page 5 Language Center News Hello from the Orange County Childhood Language Center. So many great things have taken place in our center this month that I cannot wait to share them with you. The impact we make Recently, a mother was leaving the Childhood Language Center with her two daughters after they finished a speech therapy session. I was visiting with the Executive Director of the Center, Dr. Judy Montgomery, when Dr. Montgomery smiled at the lady as she walked by and asked Did your daughter have a good session today?" "Oh, we certainly did!" she said, "my daughter is learning so much here." She went on to explain that the petite 7 year old child next to her was born with a cleft palate, and after several surgeries on the roof of her mouth and lips, was still having some difficulties with her speech. She said, "I've taken her to the best surgeons for her procedures and our whole family wants her to speak more clearly. She is a very intelligent girl. She enjoys coming to the Center, and I bring her older sister so she can help with the exercises at home. I am so glad we found this place!" After she checked with the front desk administrator to be sure she had her next appointment at the same time next week, the lady left holding the hands of both her smiling daughters. I asked Dr. Montgomery to tell me more about this problem, and she went on to explain that a child with a repaired cleft palate is normal in every other way and that today's surgical techniques are very advanced, so the child's mouth, nose and face are re-constructed beautifully. She also explained that often, a child would need to learn some speaking patterns that did not come naturally as a result of this procedure. The speech language therapists and graduate students at the CLC can teach those strategies and, with practice, the child will adopt them. Speech becomes clearer, louder, and more pleasant sounding. This improves the child's self confidence and soon we are on the road to success! I was just so proud to see firsthand the impact we make in the lives of our children, and if you have the time, please stop by our Language Center, so you too can observe and admire the great work we do everyday. We received carpet We are so thrilled to report that Mr. Rick and Mrs. Kristy Wood, who are great supporters of our Language Center, have graciously donated the necessary carpet to re-do the large therapy room and reception area. And to make things even better, a friend of the center has decided to install the carpet free of charge. Good people supporting a good cause, it just doesn t get any better wait, there is more! A backpack for every child A secret admirer of our Language Center has once again come through for us. We are happy to report that every child attending our center received a new and gorgeous backpack full of age appropriate school supplies to get them adequately equipped for a new school year. We cannot thank our donor enough for providing this gift for every child we serve at the center. Because of your generosity they are now better prepared to face life at school and know we have their backs every step of the way! pride and happiness. Our mission is simple; to help every child by providing the necessary treatment they need to overcome their speech challenges, but to do so with passion and love. Take a look at some of our younger children receiving their backpacks and supplies. Words cannot express their Let s do it Last year for certain families, especially for those with kids attending school and using mass transportation, being at the center between 9:00am and 3:00pm became challenging. Because we want to help even more, I am happy to report that the center is now open a couple of days a week until 5:30 p.m. and have added Thursdays, so we become more available to our children. Now these families don t have to choose whether to miss school or attend the center. I am so proud of our team for working so hard in order to accommodate these changes. Kudos to everyone, you rock! Well, time for me to say until next time, but please remember that you are our foundation and that without you, none of this could be achieved, so THANK YOU so much for supporting this charity, as it is up to us to bring the gift of voice to our children. Sincerely yours, Frankie Rosario, 32 President of the Board of Directors

Scottish Rite News Lodge of Perfection Page 6 Brethren, I hope everyone enjoyed our Veteran s Program last month. It was a special evening with some very special people. May God continue to bless our Veterans and those who faithfully care for them. Thank you all for supporting our Valley at our October Reunion Class. The work was excellent and the fellowship was wonderful. Please join me in welcoming our newest Brothers. We hope they will enjoy their membership in our Valley as much as we do. Remember the Cap and Ring Ceremony will take place after our stated meeting; where we will present the names of members being considered to serve the bodies next year as line officers. Courteously, Rev. David J. Kussman, 32 KCCH Venerable Master 2014 Master of Kadosh Brethren, 31 Inspector Inquisitor, or Initiate of the Egyptian Mysteries The leading feature of Egyptian religion is its emphasis on eternal existence, reflected clearly in the majestic pyramids, mummification and numerous talismans. The most important of these was the scarab, a beetle symbolic of immortality. The Egyptians believed that aspects of a man's Ka, or double could be seen in the material world. Such was the explanation given for a man's shadow or-reflection in a mirror. They believed that the Ka accompanied the body to the Abode of the Dead to be there judged and to answer for both virtues and vices of life. In the 31 degree we follow an architect from the land of chemi, who's name was Cheres, the character assumed by the candidate. When he passed away his Ka descended with his body to the Abode of the Dead for judgment. In the degree we will follow him on this journey and enter the court of the Dead to see what this man's end will be. Charles Reeves, 32 KoSA Master Of Kadosh

Scottish Rite News Page 7 Hi everyone, Senior Warden I want to inform you that you are running out of time for bringing in new members and the savings of the initiation fees. So here is a reminder: MEMBERSHIP M E M B E R S H I P M E M B E R S H I P M E M B E R S H I P That s right membership. Did you know that this is the best time to ask someone to become a member of our Valley? Does this article sound like I am repeating myself? You bet I am, this can t be a better time to ask someone to be a member of our Valley. So what are you waiting for!!! First you can make points with your Master by having the most candidates from your Blue Lodge for the two Reunion Classes, your Master and his lady will be our guest at our November Stated Meeting; Second you can be the Top Line Signer with 10 candidates for the two Reunion Classes. All the candidates have to be initiated by our October Reunion Class to qualify for the honor of receiving your 2015 dues paid by the Valley; And thirdly, did you hear the latest, this is going to knock your socks off, Illustrious Rick Wood just received word that we can lower our initiation fees and at the Quarterly Advisory Board meeting it was approved in the amount of $ That s a $ savings, the sad thing; this offer is only good until January 1, I also want to remind you that Retention is also part of Membership, so if you know someone who is thinking about dropping their membership in our Valley, please talk to them and find out what we can do as a Valley to keep them as a member. I want to inform you that our membership program had a goal of 25 new members and it looks like at this last Re-Union class will make that happen through the help of our members. In our November stated meeting I will have the complete breakdown of all the Blue lodges that participate and made our goal possible. Remember my brothers Change is for the good but no change is fatal Yours in the Faith, John R. Rider, 32, KCCH Senior Warden Well now what? Now What?? Brethren, our Fall 2014 reunion was a blast with several new degrees being presented in addition to our 5 mandatory degrees! And that leaves us with the question now what? As we see in our Blue Lodges and here in the Scottish Rite, the conferral of the degrees of the various Rites of Freemasonry always rekindles our passion and love of our venerable Craft. But we also see that it takes manpower to do this. Our Valley has just begun a task near and dear to my heart. It is a goal that we put on over the course of a few years, all 29 degrees of the Scottish Rite. This is no small feat, but thankfully, we also don t ask a lot of our degree teams. Our reunions are twice a year and practices happen for a few weeks leading up to the reunion. So how about it? We re always looking for new bodies to help put on existing and, yes, new degrees. If you re interested, please let me know and I ll happily find a place for you! Let s do this together, for our own fellowship and the benefit of those who come after us! Fraternally, James Cervantes, 32

Scottish Rite News Page 9 A Navy Veteran Returns to Normandy On the early morning of June 6, 1944 before the sun rose, a young 18-year-old Canadian sailor (Radar Operator) was serving on the HMCS Algonquin (R17) and along with some 6,000 Allied ships participated in the largest amphibious invasion in history. The Canadian Navy participated in (Operation Neptune) using many vessels along with troop ships, took a staging position about 10 km off the coast of Normandy, France in the English Channel, waiting for the invasion to commence. The Canadian Navy was to support 14,000 troops landing on a beach codenamed Juno, an area in front of a small fishing village, Courseulles-sur- Mer. Their mission was to support the troops and perform shore bombardment on the shore guns and bunkers and to assure a beachhead was established to move more troops, equipment and supplies ashore for the final assault on Europe. During their operation at Normandy, the Algonquin was detached to pickup sailors from the sinking USS Shaw (a destroyer), which had contacted a chain mine (two mines tied together by a chain that draws the mines toward the ship). The Sailor reported that there were bodies in the Channel as no one had time to retrieve them since the invasion started. The Algonquin was in the Channel for 7 to 10 days performing all sorts of tasks to support the invasion. Once detached from the Channel, and dropping off a VIP in England, they returned to convoy escort duties from Allied ports to the port of Murmansk, Russia from which the ship was originally detached. Flash-forward: the sailor was honorably discharged to continue his life, got married, moved to Southern California, and after a career, retired to enjoy golf, his wife and the Masonic Orders. At my request, we (my wife and niece) invited the Sailor to return to Normandy for the 70 th Anniversary. We arrived on June 3, 2014 and stayed at Caen in a private home, which was our base of operation. Our private tour guides were please to have a liberator as their guest. Every place we stopped French people would stop and give him hugs and thank him for their freedom. As we traveled all along the entire 80 kms of invasion beach fronts, the tour guides explained the details of the events surrounding that area and the details of the planning and execution of the invasion. As a returning veteran, the stories and explanations were enlightening because from the 6 th of June 1944 until they were detached, the Sailor s main remembrance from the immediate events on the ship and just it s surroundings, not the entire beachfronts. Our tour guides explained with great pride that the Great Crusade some 70 years before was in their minds the greatest event in the 20 th Century. They thanked the Sailor for his involvement and expressed their thanks to those 150,000 soldiers, sailors and airman who were sacrificed to make France and other countries free. On June 6 th, 2014 at the WWII Memorial in Caen, the President of France spoke in the morning to the youth of France telling them to study the Normandy campaign and understand the efforts and sacrifice of many youth on both sides of the war. Their freedom today (and their country s liberation) was at a cost of many young men giving their lives for a county some never got a chance to visit, but are now interred forever in the Allied and German military cemeteries located all over northern France. As we toured the memorial in the afternoon, our Sailor wore his ball cap (HMCS) and combat ribbons pinned over his left jacket pocket. People would stop and ask him where he was during the invasion; telling them he was off the coast, they would look at him and see this good looking older sailor and exclaim, ahh, L Enfant ; meaning a very young man who liberated their country so that their parents would survive and they in turn were born. At Juno beach, we had the honor of looking out into the Channel from where those many years ago our Sailor and his shipmates supported and performed their duties with honor, determined to win with the selfassurance that the Allied cause was just and necessary for the world to continue in freedom. The Canadian Sailor and honored guest is: Ill. Lloyd J. Clayton, 33, 50 Year Scottish Rite, Past Master of Mother Colony Lodge and golfer. To all veterans who served, your dedication and service are appreciated from all freedom loving people and those who enjoy freedom today throughout the civilized world. Tom Orbison, 32 USN

Page 10 Scottish Rite News November By-Law Change Vote As previously announced, during our September Stated meeting it was moved and seconded to change our bylaws for the purpose of changing the name of our Valley from Santa Ana to Orange County. It should be noted that changing the name of a Scottish Rite Valley is a very rare occurrence, indications from Ill. Frank Loui, SGIG for the Orient of California are that he will recommend approval to Supreme and Ill. Ron Seale, Sovereign Grand Commander if approved by our membership. A more accurate description of who we are and the area we serve are the driving reasons for seeking a change to our name. The resolution which is proposed is: Article 1: The name of this body shall be: Santa Ana Lodge of Perfection; Santa Ana Chapter Rose Croix; Santa Ana Council of Kadosh; Santa Ana Consistory will be changed to read: Orange County Lodge of Perfection; Orange County Chapter Rose Croix; Orange County Council of Kadosh; Orange County Consistory as well as all subsequent citations herein contained. Century Club CENTURY CLUB UPDATE The Century Club was started as a support group to help the Valley with expenses and to date membership in the group has provided $12,200 to the Valley. The membership is $100 per year. There is a bronze 100 pin that is awarded for the first $100. When the cumulative total reaches $500, a silver 500 pin is awarded and when the cumulative total reaches $1,000, a gold 1000 pin is awarded. October donations included David Kussman (his total now puts him is the Gold category) and Jay Webb and Sam Brandes (both joining us for the first time). The following members have also supported the Century Club for 2014: Peter Jantz, Lloyd Clayton, Ray Godeke, Bob McNamara, Rick Wood, John Rider, Kory Levoy, James Segerstrom, Frankie Rosario, Glen Woody, Kevin Hyder and Steve Bass. New Valley Historian Appointed James Segerstrom was appointed recently our Valley Historian by Ill. Rick Wood, 33.
