The cool weather of winter will be bringing in the warmth of activities in January, February, March, and April. Our social committee is actively planning many events. We are planning a wonderful progressive dinner for February 11, 2018, unlike any previous ones. We will be tasting marvelous foods from different countries prepared by our own congregants. More information to come. We are planning a beautiful weekend sometime in February or March to include the installation of our new Rabbi, Steven Henkin. The date and the events will be forthcoming as they unfold soon. On March 4, 26 people, most of them members of our synagogue, are making a 10 day trip to Israel. Our executive director Motti has made exceptional plans for this tour. Again, our golf tournament at the Landings is being planned as this is written. It will occur sometime in March or April, the date to be set very soon. All of these events are in addition to planned speakers offered by the Men s Club. In addition, all of our education programs are continuing and growing. Gala planning is also underway for our June 3rd event. Folks, things are progressing very nicely at AA. Come be part of all that is going on in our synagogue. I do think you ll like what is happening. Remember that our doors are always open to you. My best wishes for a healthy and happy Victor Shernoff, your President MEN S CLUB PRESIDENT David Hirsh CHEVRA KADISHA David Reeves ENDOWMENT COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN Joel Goodman RITUAL COMMITTEE Steve Arkin SHALOM SCHOOL Eva Locker JANUARY 2018 TEVET-SHEVAT 5778 Page 2

3 FROM THE DESK OF THE RABBI Living, Not Just Learning When I first started to seriously study Judaism while I was in college, I was not particularly observant in my Jewish observance (and by not particularly, I mean, not at all ). But as I learned more about the different rituals, as I explored what Judaism had to offer, as I started to discover all these things I never was taught growing up, I became intellectually fascinated with Judaism. It wasn t until I moved from that intellectualism to practice, though, that I actually began to realize the power it could offer. The rabbis of the Talmud have an argument about which needs to come first, intent or action. If you do not understand what you re doing, the intent-first rabbis argued, how can you meaningfully do it? The action-first rabbis responded that if you begin performing the action often enough, you will come to do it with intent. Following this latter theory, as I discovered, one needs to engage in Jewish practice for Judaism to become meaningful. Indeed, for all of the thousands of books and millions of pages of Jewish text that exist, Judaism is not supposed to be reliant on reading; it is supposed to be lived and experienced. The learning that you do in a Jewish text is only critical if it then becomes a part of your daily routine. Even if you only sort of know about a particular practice, its adherence can allow you to explore why it s meaningful for you. Either way, the more often you continue to participate in the tradition, the more it will deepen your connection through that experience. It may not happen the first time, the second time, or even the tenth time, but as you continue, you ll start to figure out how it is relevant to you. As we begin the new secular year, 2018, I want to encourage each of you to broaden your Jewish horizons and incorporate at least one new Jewish practice this coming year. If you ve been away from the synagogue for a while, maybe try coming to Shabbat services once a month. Already a regular? Perhaps become a more active participant by learning to lead services, learning to chant the Haftarah, or learning to read from the Torah (if you re interested in any of these three, I m here to help!). If prayer isn t up your alley or your schedule is too cramped, then try incorporating something else Jewish regular Jewish learning, adding to how you celebrate Shabbat, giving regular tzedakah, or any number of other things. If you re not sure where to start, I m always here, just contact me and we can find a time to talk through some ideas. In addition to wishing you a happy and healthy new year, I also hope this year brings to each of you a year of living Jewish experiences which deepen your connection to Judaism and lead you to a more meaningful Jewish life. 6 SISTERHOOD Here are 4 simple steps to do this: How do I Send a Mitzvah-Gram? 1 Print out the Mitzvah-Gram page from the current HaYom newsletter with the list of people celebrating a birthday or anniversary in February. 2 Circle the names of all those people to whom you would like to send a Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary greeting. 3 Mail or deliver your list, along with your check made out to Agudath Achim Sisterhood for $.50 for each circled name, to Barbara Abrams, 24 Raindrop Lane, Bluffton, S.C , or leave your list and check in the synagogue office. 4 Make sure to include your name(s) the way you want it (them) listed. In order for your birthday and anniversary greetings to be delivered in a timely manner, everyone needs to turn in February s Mitzvah- Gram sheet by the 15 th of January. If you have any questions about this project, please contact me at barba43@hargray.com, or at (843) or (843) Thanks to everyone for participating in this exciting program.
