In the heat of the summer, we enter the cycle of mourning with the fast on the Seventeenth of Tammuz (Tuesday June 25) which begins the three week period that ends with a full day of mourning on the Ninth of Av (evening of July 15-16), commemorating the multiple destructions that befell our people. This is immediately followed by a seven week period of comfort and spiritual renewal that culminates with Rosh Hashanah. During this period, I have been teaching a three week series titled, Turning to Tradition in Times of Loss. In the first session we studied the rituals surrounding death and mourning. Our rabbinic leaders' demonstrated keen psychological sensitivity when shaping rituals surrounding death, burial, and mourning. They carefully structured the mourning process into periods -- the time between death and burial, the first week, month and year -- guiding the individual through the different waves of grief. By studying these rituals we examined rabbinic views of life and death, and the program of comfort and healing they laid out for us. It has been an honor to work with our dedicated Chevra Kadisha. This is a group of people who provides all of the rituals associated with honoring the dead, culminating in burial. By carefully adhering to these honored rites, this sacred community has maintained and transmitted the wisdom inherent in our great tradition, even as we meet the unique challenges of our time. The world-view of our great sages was still limited by circumstance. Thus, due to the high rate of infant mortality the rabbis did need not require mourning an infant who died before thirty days. What was originally legislated out of compassion by preventing parents from being saddled by the burdens of the ritual; in our day, such a pragmatic approach ignores the grief associated with the death of an infant or miscarriage. Even in our own day, such a loss is dubbed "invisible" when it lacks a ritual response that allows the parents to grieve and receive support and comfort from the community. In our second class, we studied how the development of Jewish law and ritual in the Conservative movement sought to correct this grievance. Rabbi Amy Eilberg, my mentor, writes in a legal response for the Committee of Jewish Law and Standard of the Conservative Movement that using Jewish ritual to mourn a miscarriage communicate(s) powerfully to the family that this loss was real, and that the Jewish community understands and wants to provide support as the bereavement process gradually unfolds. (rabbinicalassembly.org, 1991). This is one of many examples of how the female voice in the rabbinate provides unique insight into our people's spiritual needs. Much of Judaism, practice and belief, is born out of our people's response to the experience of exile from Israel after the destructions of the first and second Temples in 586 BCE and 70 CE. In our third session on July 10 at 6:30 pm, we will study the theology associated with Tisha B'Av to analyze how it has sustained our people for millennia and we will evaluate its utility in a post-holocaust age. The rabbis teach, "All who mourn for Jerusalem, will be rejoice with her." (Ta'anit 30b) May we take a proactive stance to face the loss that exists in our lives on a communal and personal level. May we turn to the Jewish tradition for strength as we confront such loss. May we strengthen one another as we gather together as a supportive Jewish community. Thus, as we enter the High Holidays with an awareness of the pain in our lives and a heightened sensitivity to others, we shall be prepared for renewal, comfort and growth. 3 A MessAge FroM our Presidents desk I am sure when thinking about synagogue participation, many thoughts come to mind, daily minyan, High Holiday services, family simachs and the list goes on and on. I guess there is not a week or even a day that goes by without someone from the synagogue asking you to do something to help. In addition, there is Money. We are constantly asking you to give money. I guess this is a fact in any non-profit organization. We need money to pay our staff, utilities, maintenance, and again the list goes on and on. I think about this a lot when trying to make the AA a more vibrant, growing, and caring synagogue. What does it mean to be growing? What does it mean to be a caring synagogue? As President, I spend a lot of time with the Officers reviewing the long-range plan. We have many important goals. One is increasing membership 5% per year for the next 5 years. This will be very difficult but we work on it constantly. Maybe, a better goal is to get more of our current members more involved. I ask myself, what would get more of our members to be involved. I know you have to serve your emotional and spiritual needs. We have made great strides here at the AA the last few years and in order for this synagogue to thrive and prosper, we need each member to participate more fully. We want the Agudath Achim to be around to celebrate its 200 th anniversary. There is much to value here at the Agudath Achim and we need you to be a part of our family so that we can say to our children and grandchildren we did everything we could to thrive prosper and grow. 4 From the mind of motti. Why can't we have our own Waze? Last summer when traveling in Israel I would stop from time to time and ask about a place that I needed to get to or a restaurant that someone recommended, and every time I got the same answer: why don t you put it on Waze (or as the Israelis called it wez)? I didn t know what they were talking about, so I Googled it and, for the sake of my older readers, I will explain what Waze is all about. "Waze is a GPS system, but it differs from traditional GPS navigation as it is a community-driven application and learns from users' driving times to provide routing and real-time traffic updates. It is also free to download and use, as it gathers map data and other information from users who use the service. Additionally, people can report accidents, traffic jams, speed traps, police, and can update roads, landmarks, house numbers, etc. Waze also helps users find the cheapest, closest gas station around them or along their route. Many of you heard the end of this story: few weeks ago Google bought Waze for a reported 1.2 billion dollars and made a few young Israelis very rich! One would ask himself again how come little Israel is doing it over and over again. What about the Israeli's makes this happen? I think that there are many theories, and if you are interested I would recommend a book written by a friend of ours called Start-up Nation, but today I want to talk only about Waze. It is very clear to me why Waze happened only in Israel. Only in Israel will you hear a dialog between two drivers that do not know each other about which restaurant they should go to, how much their car costs them or what they do for a living and how much they get paid! In Israel there is a very strong sense of community. An app that get its life support from voluntary feeds will flourish in Israel because everyone is in everyone's business, everyone knows or at least pretends to know everybody, and at the end of the day everyone cares. If you would ask the Israelis about their community-minded society they probably would call it a different name and would allude to the small size of the country. They might even resent it and tell you that you cannot buy moments of quiet or be left alone in this place. They might even explain that they will travel abroad for vacation just to get piece of mind with no other Israelis around, but at the end of the day they love it! Here in Savannah we live in a very small Jewish community. We are so small that our existence depends on our involvement in the community in the same form that Waze works, feeding and receiving: info, money, value and other things. The beauty of the Jewish community of Savannah is the ability of its members to ignore the natural gap between age groups, religious affiliations, political views and socioeconomic bearing. It's possible that the old system does not work and if so it is our responsibility to invent our own Waze. We have to find a vehicle that will enable us to feed and share our info, opinions, ideas and values. The Israelis could probably survive without Waze. As for us, finding a tool or place that we can all feed to and receive from is a necessity. See you in shul! Motti Motti Locker will be speaking about the Current Events in Israel Thursday, July 25th at 7pm in Sun City at the home of Liela Weltman JULY/AUGUST, 2013 TAMMUZ/ELUL 5773 Page 4

5 NEWS FROM SISTERHOOD Joanna Rich President As we begin our year in Sisterhood, we have much to discuss and some important decisions to make. To begin, please take note of the following dates and deadlines: (Flyers for the Honey and Holiday Baking have been mailed and/or ed.) July 1, your Holiday Honey orders must be in (mail to Treasurer, Linda Friedman) August 5, your Holiday baking orders must be in (mail to Treasurer, Linda Friedman) August 5-8, we will be baking the holiday goodies (challah, cakes) and need volunteers to help bake (contact Joanna Rich by phone or ) August 18th, 10 a.m. AA - Open Sisterhood meeting to discuss the combined Sisterhood/Mens Club programs for the 2012/14 year. RSVP to Joanna Rich for this meeting. Following is what we will be discussing at the open meeting: I recently met with Bob Schwartz, the acting leader for the revived Men s Club at AA, to discuss the possibility of Sisterhood and Men s Club continuing to work together on several projects and/or meetings we have tentatively scheduled for this year. --We will have a joint Minyan Breakfast the last Sunday of the month. (2013-9/29, 10/27, 11/24, 12/29; /26, 2/23, 3/30 - April? and May 25?) Costs will be $8 for adults and $4 for a child. AJ Haysman will handle menu and preparation, Steve Sacks is a special guest chef including for appropriate Minyans and special events, and committee (men and women) will do set up and clean up. --Once a quarter a talk or event of interest by a speaker that can draw a group. The first week of a quarter: November, February, May and Sept (This year will be August 18th for a welcome back Pizza night). --Once a year one of the talks/events will be for paid up members only, including Men and Woman. Proposed Dues will be $36 a year for Club or Sisterhood. If a family, $60 for the year. (This event will replace the Sisterhood Paid Up meeting.) --Ernie Friedman and committee will handle kitchen and serving duties for Hanukah party. We will secure our dates of interest at the July calendar meeting and notify members of final dates and events. We also want to create committees (of peers & friends) to plan and staff the following: -an event for younger members and/or young families -a committee for building and setting up the Sukkah (Hadassah will chair and provide food for Sukkah event at AA on Tuesday, Sept. 24th 6 p.m.) -possible event or meeting in Bluffton region Men s Club has been doing work, as needed, around synagogue and always welcomes additional help. Sisterhood needs to revitalize, restock and staff the gift shop--a committee is needed to take this over. We are doing the Honey Sales again (note order deadline above), and if we want to continue to bake for the holidays, a committee is needed to staff and prepare. If we want additional meetings (separate from the proposed combined meeting), our challenge is to find interested members who will provide their time and expertise to plan and staff additional meetings. Instead of looking for a traditional board and officers, separate committees (in charge of one specific event) may be a better choice. With a one-time committee, the members can set up with their peers and friends. We would love to have your thoughts on this. The open meeting on August 18th will be a very full and important meeting and we need your attendance and input to help us secure a strong, productive presence for the coming year. 6 Informative News from the Men s Club: Men s Club Summer 2013 First, a thank you to Kenneth, who without his leadership and personal help, there would be no Men's Club today. The rest of you who have helped and/or attended events are highly appreciated as well. This is indeed a family affair and all of us are in it together. Rabbi is of course our spiritual leader and Motti for all things. Thank you all. During the past year we have chosen to work with our Sisterhood to develop joint programs of mutual interest. What we believe will be of interest for the coming 12 months will be the last Sunday of the Month Minyan and breakfast; and quarterly events with exciting speakers. One scheduled event will be a welcome back pizza/spaghetti dinner, August 8 th for men, women and children. Of course we will continue to assist Ernie Friedman with the Hanukah party and David Reeves and Ron Robbins with maintenance work in and around the Synagogue. Finally, we will begin to have to charge for breakfast ($8 adults and $4 for children); $36 dues for either club and $60 for dues for both clubs combined. There will be one paid up member event during the year. We already have a number of members who have offered to set-up, cook and of course help clean up. AJ Haysman is our Minyan Chef; Steve Sachs is our spaghetti chef and we are negotiating with David Hirsh on the Pizza side. Of course, Joanna Rich has helped a number of times. Jack Wolf is our new volunteer Treasurer. For all the helpers and those congregants who have helped with donations to cover events, I am most appreciative and personally gratified with their good will and contributions. Thank you. Bob Schwartz, , bob_schwartz@att.net Sunday s, June 30 th, July 28, Minyan 9:00 am, Men, Women and Children welcome breakfast after ($8 for adults, $4 for children) JULY/AUGUST, 2013 TAMMUZ/ELUL 5773 Page 6

7 Family Shabbat In May, we had Friday night services and Shabbat dinner at the Rabbi s house. Mrs. Barkan cooked up a storm. We celebrated the joys of Shabbat together: The kids did a pre-shabbat activity of decorating the patio with Jewish symbols. We sang, ate, and prayed. Every Friday night and Saturday morning we have family-friendly services. Once a month we enjoy Shabbat dinner together, too. We hope you join us this Shabbat! 8 Dear AA Synagogue; Backpack Buddies is such a blessing for our students. Please thank your packers, delivery persons, and your congregation for their generosity in helping our families. I wish you could have seen the faces of the students when they received their summer books. The joy and surprise from even our older boys would have brought a tear to your eyes. It means a lot to them that someone cares about them and is doing something to make them feel so special. One of my female students hugged the books to her chest and with bright, shiny eyes and a huge grin said, Oh, goody. Please thank them so much for making my summer! Thank all of you for making the year easier and less stressful for our families. It is a joy to meet and talk with the delivery volunteers. I hope you all understand what a difference you are making in these students lives. I hope you have a restful and fun summer. I look forward to seeing you in the fall. Gratefully, Sherry Ingram Hesse K-8 School Counselor At our annual board meeting we thanked our outgoing board members, Gale Hirsh, Linda Meyers, Paul Todtfeld, and our Recording Secretary Bunny Cohen. We thank them for their devoted service over the years. We renewed the term of Jesse Ruben and welcomed new board members, Debbie Luskey and Liz Arkin. May they lead us with strength and wisdom as we grow our synagogue.
