"Why are you planting this tree? You will not be alive to see its fruit." The old man replied, "Just as my parents planted for me, I now plant for my children." (Talmud Taanit 23a). It is natural to evaluate our life at the end of the year, to reflect on lessons learned at the close of a chapter, or question the ultimate purpose as we approach the end. The old man in the above exchange, though, is not the one who is questioning; rather, he is performing his daily tasks with a serenity that is rooted in the past and a confidence related to the future. "The 'before' and 'after' are interwoven in his time experience." The present moment he experiences is connected to eternity. As I approach the end of my term as rabbi of Congregation Agudath Achim, I too am aware of this eternal aspect contained in the pillars of our tradition: Torah, Avodah/ worship, and Gemilut Chasadim/loving-kindness. In our synagogue, we have continued the sacred tradition of daily minyan passed down through generations of faithful devotion of the founders of our synagogue. It has been an honor to work with the morning minyan captains; one who has been serving in this role for more than three decades and another who inherited this responsibility from his father. A new minyan captain recently stepped up to lead one afternoon a week on Mondays. A number of new minyaneers started attending on a regular basis. This has enabled us to ensure a minyan for the many who faithfully say kaddish for their yahrzeits. Minyan also provided a concrete way to translate one's devotion to God and community into the simple act of showing up. As we have brought renewed life to this tradition we proudly declare, "As our parents planted for us, so do we plant for future generations." However, for many members -- young and old -- our Jewish tree appears old and corroded. The ancient diet of our forefathers' wisdom no longer nourishes spirit and mind in our hyper-individualized, technological, fast-paced, scientific, cynical, and immediate pleasure-seeking society. In the face of real and legitimate challenges, a number of members who were loosely connected by the disappearing fumes of nostalgia have discovered renewed access to the wonderful fruit of the Tree of Knowledge through Conservative Judaism's method of study that honors historical inquiry, yet commands a full commitment of the heart. This has enhanced and deepened the culture of Torah study in our synagogue community and empowered people to take hold of and transmit our Tree of Life to future generations. 3 CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE.. In accordance with the name of our synagogue, Agudath Achim -- band of brothers/sisters -- the strongest aspect of our synagogue is the obligation we feel towards our respective communities: in the face of individual loss and hardship, our synagogue spreads out a safety-net of support and chesed, kindness; throughout bombardments upon our homeland, we stand in unflinching solidarity with Israel to protect herself; while others' hateful acts threaten our security at home and attack the core of our basic values of decency all over the world, we pursue justice while we define and maintain a universal vision of peace, pluralism, and compassion. Building on our robust Backpack Buddy Program that feeds hungry children in our local schools over the weekends, our congregation has added a grassroots initiative that supports a local camp, Camp Lighthouse, for under-privileged children run by Israeli, American Jewish, and local Savannah teens. In the same pluralistic spirit, we have developed an open dialogue on race and faith with Speedwell United Methodist Church. This allowed us to reach out in an authentic way to offer support after the Charleston massacre. These are two examples of renewed relationship with the African American community that is enthusiastically growing out of our shared history and noble destiny as distinct minorities in possession of a rich heritage. We have inherited both challenges and victories which have the power to define our future. Your active involvement in these joint initiatives enables our synagogue to build bridges of understanding and action over the widening gap between rich and poor that are repairing the main structures of our society. It has been a distinct honor to have had the opportunity to build upon the solid, vibrant, and authentic foundation of Congregation Agudath Achim. I am very aware of all those who planted before us for our benefit and the humble contribution that we have made together for the benefit of future generations. May we all continue to cherish the serenity and confidence that comes with this kind of eternal planting. Go from strength to strength! Rabbi Ruven Barkan JULY-AUGUST 2015 TAMMUZ-ELUL 5775 Page 3
4 Information from the President: Dear Congregants, A few days ago I attended a meeting to review our recent Gala: results, glitches, adjustments we might consider for the future. In attendance were congregants Victor Shernoff (VP), Ron Robbins, Elise Shernoff (Financial Secretary and Volunteer of the Year), and Samra Robbins. This meeting was held about ten days after the Gala while it was fresh in our minds. By all accounts it was a smashing success: raised more money, sold more tickets, more attendees, etc. A large part of the meeting was devoted to next year s event. Congregants like these are essential for our congregation to survive and thrive. We do not have enough of them. Buying a ticket or three to support the synagogue is nice but not enough. We need more congregational help, brain power, and sometimes elbow grease, particularly when it comes to devising and supporting our adult, young people and children's educational and social events. We also need congregants who are willing to fundraise for the congregation. This has apparently been traditionally an unpopular activity that requires heavy lifting. I am going to ask the Board of Directors to help me, as a few of them did last year, in Calling the Congregants to wish you good health and a good summer and get your opinions as to how we are doing and what else you would like us to be doing. 8 Men s Club Returns! Men s Club Information Fellow Congregants: Steve Roth has asked me to re-start our men s club. I am eager to see this happen and happy to do anything I can. But I need your help. Our synagogue men s club can be a vibrant center of social, religious, and intellectual activity if we make it so! All I ask you today is to please contact me if you are interested in being a part of the AA Men s Club. Also, in what kinds of Men s Club activities you would like to participate? Social events? Speakers and discussions of public events? Study groups? Tzedakah projects? All of the above? Please let me hear from you, I am hoping that over the summer we can make some definite plans for the year ahead. You can me at: dansh22@hotmail.com.
