2 This week s parsha is Vayetzei which is Hebrew for and he left. Jacob leaves Beersheba and travels towards Haran. He stops for the night at the place. Rabbis have interpreted this to be Mount Moriah. Jacob dreams of a ladder connecting earth to heaven with angels ascending and descending on it. God appears beside Jacob and renews the covenant He made with Abraham. The description of Jacob s dream is considered to be among the most beautiful in literature (Hazlitt). The message in Jacob s dream is one for all men (and women) throughout the ages -that every spot on earth may be a gate to heaven. In the morning, Jacob awakens and takes the stone he had used as a pillow. He sets it up as a pillar pouring oil on top of it. Jacob vows to devote part of his prosperity, which God had promised him, to His service. This is the first mention of a vow in the Bible. In Haran Jacob sees Rachel, Laban s daughter, tending sheep at the wetland and wishes to marry her. For seven years Jacob works for Laban in order to marry Rachel. Instead, he is tricked into marrying Leah. Jacob agrees to work for Laban another seven years in exchange for marrying Rachel also. Jacob has six sons and a daughter with Leah. Rachel remains barren. She gives Jacob two of her handmaidens to marry, both of By Artist Sheila Nemtin whom give Jacob sons. Finally, Rachel is blessed by God with a son, whom she names Joseph. After fourteen years, Jacob decides to return home. Laban persuades him to stay by offering him sheep in exchange for his labor. Jacob prospers despite Laban s repeated attempts to swindle him. After twenty years, Jacob leaves Haran with his family and property. He is pursued by Laban. In a dream, Laban is warned by God not to hurt Jacob. Laban and Jacob make a covenant of non aggression into the other s land on Mount Galeed, marking the spot with a pillar of stones. Jacob continues on to the Holy Land and is met by angels. Bring your own Hanukkiah and we will light the Hanukkah lights together. Let s make new Hanukkah memories together. With the fires causing an incredible amount of grief and property damage, we have included in this newsletter an opportunity to help the victims. SACRED CIRCLE Using various Jewish writings as catalysts, we will examine different concepts in Judaism as they relate to our personal lives. As we study and share our own sacred stories, we create closer community through our shared experiences. 8 GET READY FOR AHAVAT TORAH CONGREGATION S AWESOME HANUKKAH PARTY FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6PM INCLUDING A CHANCE TICKET AUCTION Along with the wonderful Hanukkah party, we will have a Chance Ticket Auction. For those who have never experienced this type of auction, this is the process. Items are arranged on the table and each item will have a cup next to it. Tickets will be sold on which you will write your name. When you select items that you like, you put one or any number of tickets in the cup adjacent to the item. When the auction closes, a ticket is drawn from the cup and that person is the winner. In other words, the event is a unique kind of raffle, where you know what your prize will be when you win. If you have a drawer filled with items you have purchased on a trip and never used or items people have given you, this is the time to re-gift all those never used new items for our auction. When you bring those items to temple THIS Shabbat please give them to Terri. In the bag or box of your donated gifts, please include your name, address and a list of the items, so we can prepare a tax donation form to send you. We have a limited amount of table space for the auction at the Hanukkah party because there will be so much going on. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP! 11 LAST SHABBAT Thank you Yaniv for your beautiful chanting. Thank you Bert for sharing your World War II experiences with us. We were happy that Rabbi Dalia Marx from Israel who was in the USA for a Rabbinic Conference found our Synagogue Sid and Arlene Rosenblatts son, Mark was visiting from New York. We were glad he was able to join us and enjoy our celebratory, blessed, musical Shabbat service.!11

12 Veterans Day Celebration Veterans were honored at the Los Angeles National Cemetery on Sunday, November 11th. Chaplain Dov Cohen skillfully served as the Master of Ceremony. The dignified morning event commemorated the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Amid speeches, a children s choir, and the presentation of medals, gratitude toward those who served was abundant. At precisely 11:11 AM bells tolled throughout the United States and Europe. In addition to bells peeling at the Los Angeles National Cemetery, our own Rabbi Miriam and Gerry Owen sounded the Shofars. It was an awe-filled moment that evoked a myriad of emotions. Chaplain Dov is to be saluted for putting on such a meaningful celebration of those who served. A.T. member Larry Kaufman retired as a Lt. Commander after serving 25 years in the Naval Reserves.!12
