2 INFORMATION FROM THE PRESIDENT Rabbi Steven Henkin EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Motti Locker PRESIDENT Victor Shernoff VICE PRESIDENT Kenneth Sadler VICE PRESIDENT Matthew Allan VICE PRESIDENT Adam Fins FINANCIAL SECRETARY Liz Arkin RECORDING SECRETARY Ed Bernard TREASURER Michael Bonder IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT Steven Roth BOARD MEMBERS Robyn Carroll Kenneth Hoffman Fran Kaminsky Sidney Karp Marcy Konter Stavie Kreh Nancy Isaacson Jerome Lederman Jeffrey Mayo Rick Meier Barry Schlafstein Linda Zoller HONORARY MEMBER David Hirsh SISTERHOOD Gale Hirsh MEN S CLUB PRESIDENT David Hirsh Can travelers from a synagogue in south Georgia build a relationship with Jews 6,400 miles away in Israel? Victor Shernoff thinks they can and they have after 25 members of Agudath Achim Synagogue made the 13-day trip to Israel earlier this month. The purpose was to experience the Jewish homeland they have been supporting all their lives, but Shernoff believes they found much more. It is impossible to experience the Western Wall of the Temple that was destroyed in the 16 th century and not feel a kinship with the people who are visiting the wall to share their thoughts, their prayers... their hopes, said Shernoff, who led the contingent from the Conservative Savannah synagogue as the congregation s president. This history of the site is so overwhelming The meaning so significant it s hard to put into words. Shernoff envisioned the trip for his congregation members along with Motti Locker, the synagogue s administrative director and a native of Israel. He asked Locker to arrange the itinerary and started promoting the trip among his membership. Three days later, Locker advised him to stop promoting: Twenty-five people already had signed up and paid their fares. We returned with great pride in our homeland, its progress and its Jewishness, Shernoff said. Not even the 14-hour flight dampened our enthusiasm. Within an hour of arriving, 19 of us were on the Tel Aviv beach boardwalk for a spirited dinner. Every day was filled with journeys to ancient sites: the Temple, Mount Messada, the Dead Sea We excavated with an archeologist, dipped into the Dead Sea and climbed hills and mountains too numerous to name. He said the Savannahians built relationships with the people they came into contact with that will extend for years. The western wall of the temple that was destroyed in biblical days, has become a symbol of hope for Jews, Christian and Arabs alike. Thousands visit daily, many passing secret, written messages to God by inserting them into the cervices of the aged stones composing it. In April, children in the synagogue s Sunday school classes will begin assembling their own stone replicas to build a similar wall in the Agudath Achim s reception area. The wall then will be moved to the lobby of the Jewish Education Association several blocks away as the Savannah Jewish Community celebrates the 64 th anniversary of the State of Israel. The idea is to help our children understand their rich history, their customs and the reasons behind them and the way Judaism can help build a more meaningful life, Shernoff said. Through the stories that our travelers tell from this trip, we hope to help build the understanding our children and grand-children have of their heritage and continue to build on the relationships between Jews in Georgia and those in Israel. 3 FROM THE DESK OF THE RABBI Holiday or Festival? Living in Both Solemnity and Joy A couple of weeks ago, a congregant asked whether Passover was a holiday or a festival. Probing further, since I was not clear on the distinction, she responded, Holidays are more solemn, festivals more joyous. I responded that in my understanding of our tradition, we generally don t make that distinction; there is a solemnity to the holidays as we recall the trials and tribulations of our people s national story, but also a celebration of the miracles God worked to get us through those times. These days, with the possible exception of minor fast days and Tisha b Av, are both. By the time each of you get to reading this newsletter, we ll be in the midst of a section of the Jewish calendar which exemplifies this dichotomy. Sefirat HaOmer, literally, the counting of the Omer, has us observe the commandment in Leviticus 23:15, to count seven weeks of weeks or 49 days from the second night of Passover until we get to Shavuot, which is the fiftieth day when, according to rabbinic tradition, we received the Torah. Traditionally, Sefirat HaOmer is a solemn period in which acts of celebration are prohibited, but as we ll see in the month of April, joy punctuates the periods of sadness. Shortly after Passover, we have two holidays, first Yom Hashoah, one of the more somber days of the year as we remember the six million Jews who were brutally murdered in Europe under the Nazis. We invite everyone to join the Jewish community at the JEA on Thursday night, April 12, for a short service and to hear from George Rishfeld, a survivor who will share his story. The following week, Wednesday, April 18, we observe Yom Hazikaron, Israel s Memorial Day, on which we remember all of those who gave their lives for our Jewish State. In Israel, this is observed with a siren which goes off and the entire country comes to a stand-still. People stop their cars in the middle of the road and get out as they remember loved ones or friends who have died for their country. In order to show that these deaths were not in vain, we turn the sadness to joy as the next day--on Thursday, April 19- -we honor Israel s Independence Day, Yom Ha atzmaut. This year, for Israel s 70th anniversary, AA is part of the JEA s Israel@70 festival as we celebrate 70 years of our Jewish homeland. As you read through the newsletter, you ll learn more about what we as AA are doing for the big day and how you can play a part in it--including seeing the slideshow of our congregational trip to Israel and helping us build our own version of the Kotel (Western Wall) to answer What does Israel mean to you? And, finally, in addition to our regular Shabbat celebrations, we re re-instituting Celebration Shabbat once a month starting in April, when we invite everyone who has a birthday or anniversary to join us as we honor you on your special day! With all of these events, some are solemn holidays, others joyous festivals, but in observing them we recognize that they re both--there s the pain of loss, but the joy of survival; the sadness of mourning, the gratitude for the human and divine miracle that allows us to be here. Each of these days reminds us that these emotions live together, not apart. We therefore hope you ll join us throughout April as we cry, ache, laugh, and rejoice during this special season. 6 SISTERHOOD Here are 4 simple steps to do this: How do I Send a Mitzvah-Gram? 1 Print out the Mitzvah-Gram page from the APRIL HaYom newsletter with the list of people celebrating a birthday or anniversary in MAY. 2 Circle the names of all those people to whom you would like to send a Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary greeting. 3 Mail or deliver your list, along with your check made out to Agudath Achim Sisterhood for $.50 for each circled name, to Barbara Abrams, 24 Raindrop Lane, Bluffton, S.C , or leave your list and check in the synagogue office. 4 Make sure to include your name(s) the way you want it (them) listed. In order for your birthday and anniversary greetings to be delivered in a timely manner, everyone needs to turn in May Mitzvah-Gram sheet by the 15 th of April. If you have any questions about this project, please contact me at barba43@hargray.com, or at (843) or (843) Thanks to everyone for participating in this exciting program.
