Thus many turn to other places to address these questions or simply leave them unaddressed. Judaism becomes stale, superstitious or irrelevant. The mitzvah of studying Torah is vital to taking ownership of Jewish tradition, addressing existential questions in life, and developing a vibrant spiritual community. Such values deserve being examined against our other top priorities in life. The rabbis do so by arguing whether practicing Judaism or studying it is greater. They conclude that studying Torah is greater because knowledge precedes practice. The mitzvah of studying Torah is so great that the rabbis assert that studying Torah is equivalent to all of our other mitzvot, sacred obligations -- Talmud Torah kneged kulam. Personally, when I discovered that Jewish tradition contained a sophisticated world view in university, I started to make my own Jewish commitments as a young adult and launched my Jewish journey. The classical Jewish way to study is in chevrutah. This word is the basis for the modern Hebrew word for friend, chaver. Study involves a strong social component. We bounce ideas off one another to see things from different perspectives. This methodology is a religious value in and of itself. It also allows peoples' different strengths and experiences to compliment and support one another. Ultimately, studying in chevrutah underscores the powerful message that we are not alone on our Jewish journeys through life. In the safe setting of a group of friends the process of study is reinforced and supported. Building on this model, we have to-date established five chavurot in the synagogue. These are groups of friends that meet on a regular basis for the sake of studying Torah. There are currently two more in formation. Please let me know if you would like to join or start one of your own. Indeed, the multiple opportunities for studying Torah have taken root and flourished in our synagogue. We also offer open classes each week on the Torah portion (Shabbat afternoon), Jewish prayer (Wednesday morning), rabbinic thought (Thursday morning), and reading Hebrew (Sunday afternoon). We are fortunate to have congregants who teach classes. I want to thank Davida Stockton for teaching our Hebrew class and Linda Sacks for teaching one of two monthly classes in Sun City. We also have different congregants who lead a book group each month. Our last session was offered by Dr. Daniel Skidmore-Hess and our next one on February 1 will be led by Herman Cranman. Of course, we are also blessed to have such a multi-talented Executive Director, Motti Locker, who is an incredible resource of Torah for us all. A special thanks to Debbie Luskey, the chair of our Adult Education committee, for supporting this robust program in our synagogue. In addition to formal avenues for study, the power to meet with a spiritual advisor one-on-one is a powerful pathway for spiritual growth. Personal study sessions allow one to explore issues of faith and identity. You are always welcome to schedule a time to meet with me to deepen your Jewish journey in such a way. For those who are on the run, you can listen to an audio Dvar Torah in our weekly e-news as you drive to work. For those who are hungering to intensify their study, there are excellent opportunities to study for an intensive week, summer, or entire year in dynamic programs across the country and in Israel. Some say there has never been a richer time to study Torah in Jewish history. Others say there has never been such an absence of serious Torah study. The potential for both extremes exists yet the choice is ours and that will determine our own future. By taking small steps we can translate great visions into reality. The mitzvah of studying Torah is a vital step to address the essential questions of life, deepen your Jewish journey, and, ultimately, serve as a model and guide for the next generation on this awe-inspiring journey.
