2 INFORMATION FROM THE PRESIDENT Rabbi Steven Henkin EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Motti Locker PRESIDENT Victor Shernoff VICE PRESIDENT Kenneth Sadler VICE PRESIDENT Matthew Allan VICE PRESIDENT Adam Fins FINANCIAL SECRETARY Liz Arkin RECORDING SECRETARY Ed Bernard TREASURER Michael Bonder IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT Steven Roth BOARD MEMBERS Robyn Carroll Kenneth Hoffman Fran Kaminsky Sidney Karp Marcy Konter Stavie Kreh Nancy Isaacson Jerome Lederman Jeffrey Mayo Rick Meier Barry Schlafstein Linda Zoller HONORARY MEMBER David Hirsh MEN S CLUB PRESIDENT David Hirsh CHEVRA KADISHA David Reeves ENDOWMENT COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN Joel Goodman RITUAL COMMITTEE Steve Arkin Chag Sameach There are many parallels between my professional life and my synagogue leadership life. One such example is that I learned in both aspects what I needed to know prior to actually starting each and then I immediately started to do all required tasks. In my professional life, on September 30, 1980, I knew everything about state and local and federal funding for mental health due to my administrative position. On October 1, 1980, I started my new career and knew nothing about anything. To demonstrate my lack of knowledge and skill, I must tell you this true story. On October 1, I went on my first trip with my father to Myrtle Beach on a sales trip. The first night we were there we were meeting with an older Israeli couple who had multiple stores. During my Dad's presentation he asked me to get the 45-inch canvas float from the shelf. I immediately began looking for a tape measure because I had no idea what he was talking about. After stumbling around for a minute or so, the Israeli woman got out of her chair, walked over to the shelf, and handed me the 45-inch canvas float. She also told me the ing "Son, I don't remember your name, but you better know this item if you're going to succeed in this business" I immediately became a quick learner. On the Synagogue front, Steve Roth, at the time our President, was a good tutor and helped show me the important facts about being the president. The last three months prior to me becoming president, I asked many people what strategies they saw that I needed to implement. By the time I did become president not only did I have my own strategies in place to implement, I also had many new volunteers for my board, for committees, and for the Shalom School board. Again, I was a quick learner. I hope you see the similarity between my two lifestyle choices. At the beginning of my two year term as president, I had an agenda to accomplish. With the help of so many volunteers I do think "we" accomplished most of them. We have successfully found a wonderful rabbi in Rabbi Steven Henkin, we got through the first year of my term successfully ing the spiritual leadership of our executive director, Motti Locker, we are attracting new members, and we have a different perspective on daily minyans, many of which are led by volunteers. We have a better academic and better synagogue relationship with Congregation Mickve Israel due to our coordinated efforts at Shalom School. At the present time there are 79 students, 25 of whom are from AA. Everything I have just said is a direct relationship to the "we" factor. On my bucket list, I have two more agenda items. Continuity with our progress for success certainly is number one. The second item is a synagogue trip to Israel. The trip is now a reality and approximately 22 people are scheduled to be on it from March 4 through March 14, What a great success this process has been. Last year, on this very same bima, I assured everyone in attendance that "we" were not on a rudderless ship in the middle of the ocean going round and round. I hope that "we" all take with confidence this assurance. As I have said on multiple occasions, the doors at Congregation Agudath Achim remain open for your needs. 'We are on a mission with community coordination and leadership foremost in our thoughts. I thank you for allowing me to serve as your president. I am aware of our past, our present day, and our future, and folks, our future is bright. Chag Sameach to all from Elise, my family, and most of all from me. This year may we be blessed with health, prosperity, and sweetness for the coming year. I have wanted to say this for many years since our last synagogue trip to Israel: "This year in Jerusalem." 3 FROM THE DESK OF THE RABBI As we do towards the end of every November, we prepare to celebrate one of my favorite American holidays, Thanksgiving. While I confess that I love the food that we eat on Thanksgiving and don t object to the football games, what I truly love is the time I get to spend with my family and the few extra moments to reflect on all the things in our lives for which we are grateful. With as busy as our lives can get, these moments when we can see how truly blessed we are feel like a gift. While we often think of Thanksgiving as a secular holiday, it does have strong connections to Judaism, as well. After all, gratitude is a major part of our tradition. The rabbis of the Talmud teach that a person should say one hundred blessings each day. While that seems like a large number, it is easily achievable, as there are blessings for virtually everything we do. There are blessings before we eat, so we can thank God for providing food, and after we eat, to thank God for being satisfied by what we ate. There s a blessing for thanking God for how the body works, recognizing that if even one thing were to go wrong, we wouldn t be able to live (as anyone who has ever had an infection knows, even microscopic bacteria can wreak havoc on our bodies!). There are blessings for studying Torah. There are blessings for waking up in the morning and going to sleep at night. The Sukkot holiday, which we celebrated last month, has a lot of parallels to Thanksgiving, as it is a harvest holiday in which we celebrate and thank God for the bounty we are able to enjoy. The rabbis reasoning in instituting this rule of saying one hundred blessings seems to have been twofold. One was to never forget that we are in God s Presence, that everything we do is because God has given us the ability to do it. We recognize the food we eat, the bodies we ve been given, the Torah we study and everything else did not magically appear but are gifts from God. The second reason is to give thanks to God for all the little things that can be easy to take for granted. It is easy for us as we go through our days to forget how fragile our existence is, how dependent on the world around us we are. Taking a moment to say a blessing reminds us to be grateful for these things which are easy for us to otherwise not think about as we go from one thing to the next. As we join together on Thanksgiving this month, as we sit down with our families and friends, I hope each of you will take a moment to count the blessings in your life, to see the people and things around you which make your life blessed. And then, may we take that appreciation, joy, and gratitude, and carry it with us each day, never ceasing to be thankful. NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2017 CHESHVAN-TEVET 5778 Page 3

5 BACKPACK BUDDIES Dear Fellow Congregant, Thanksgiving is 2 weeks away. This year, as in past years, your Backpack Buddies program will be providing a complete Thanksgiving meal to the families of the children that we serve weekly. I don t have to tell you how meaningful that can be for a family in serious need. We will be providing each family we serve with a pound fully cooked turkey, with sides of stuffing, mashed potatoes, vegetables, gravy, cranberry dressing, and dessert. We project that we will serve families. We buy these complete meals for $50. So, we are trying to raise $4,500 - $5,500 to cover the cost of these Thanksgiving meals. I am writing to ask if you would sponsor one or more families by making a donation of $50, $100, $150, or some other amount with which you are comfortable, toward this Backpack Buddies Special Thanksgiving Meal program. We would be so very appreciative if you would participate. To do so, you can either: 1) contact the office, tell us how much you would like to donate, and the synagogue will bill you; or 2) send your check to: Congregation Agudath Achim, ATTN: BPB Thanksgiving Meals, 9 Lee Boulevard, Savannah, GA We are blessed in the knowledge and comfort that, for our families, a bountiful Thanksgiving meal will be on our tables on Thursday, November 23rd. Together, we can ensure that the families of the children we serve weekly also will enjoy a share of those blessings. Thank you for your continued support of the Agudath Achim Backpack Buddies program and for the mitzvah you perform. Warmest regards, Stephen and Annette NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2017 CHESHVAN-TEVET 5778 Page 5

7 SISTERHOOD Here are 4 simple steps to do this: How do I Send a Mitzvah-Gram? 1 Print out the Mitzvah-Gram page from the current HaYom newsletter with the list of people celebrating a birthday or anniversary in December. 2 Circle the names of all those people to whom you would like to send a Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary greeting. 3 Mail or deliver your list, along with your check made out to Agudath Achim Sisterhood for $.50 for each circled name, to Barbara Abrams, 24 Raindrop Lane, Bluffton, S.C , or leave your list and check in the synagogue office. 4 Make sure to include your name(s) the way you want it (them) listed. In order for your birthday and anniversary greetings to be delivered in a timely manner, everyone needs to turn in December s Mitzvah- Gram sheet by the 15 th of November. If you have any questions about this project, please contact me at barba43@hargray.com, or at (843) or (843) Thanks to everyone for participating in this exciting program.
