As you have likely learned by now, Rabbi Barry Krieger decided to resign at the beginning of August. I have heard many express their surprise at this event. Some have spoken out with anger about this happening so close to the beginning of the High Holidays. There is nothing wrong with people feeling strongly about this occurrence. However we must consider how we act on our emotions and, even more importantly, what we will do going forward. Let me tell you what your Board of Directors are doing. We held a meeting after receiving the Rabbi s letter of resignation and decided to set up two committees. The first committee has been chartered to identify and interview candidates to lead our High Holiday services. The second committee is chartered to initiate a search for a long term Rabbi replacement for the coming year. Only the first committee has been populated as its task is immediate. Following the High Holidays, we will populate the second committee AND we are looking for members to volunteer to serve on this committee. As of the writing of this message, the first committee had already interviewed one candidate and was arranging to interview a second candidate within the next three days. By the time you read this issue of the Chai Line, the Board will have met and decided on who will lead our High Holiday services. Please rest assured that the board is acting quickly to ensure our rabbinic needs are met.

2 Page 2 Volume 11 Issue 2 I hope that everyone is enjoying summer vacation despite our unpredictable New England weather this year. By now, all registration forms should be in and you have received a school calendar. Teacher orientation is on August 26. This is an opportunity for the veteran staff and new staff to meet, have dinner and study together. I am happy to announce that we are fully staffed. We want to welcome our teachers: Sue Karloff/kindergarten grade 1; Keren Gordon/grade two; Cathy Fortin, and Tova Friedman/grades 3/4; Joan Perlman and Maayan Carmi/grades 5/6 and Marion Rabinowitz/grade 7. Michael Aisenberg and Arianna Hershon are our teaching assistants. "Eizeh Hu chacham, halomed micol adam." Who is wise, one who learns from all mankind. These words from Ethics of our Fathers teach us the process of learning. Tefilah and Family programming are two models in our Hebrew school that fulfill these words. Please be a part of your child's education and come to Tefilah from 9:30-10:00. If you have a Yartzeit or need to say Kaddish, please join our school Tefilah before 10:00 AM. Information on Family Education times and dates will be announced as time gets closer. Sept 11 7:30 PM Shabbat Service TBD Sept 18 7:30 PM Erev Rosh Hashana Board Temple Emanuel has renewed it's BJs Group Membership as of July. This means that YOU, as a Temple member can renew or join BJ's at the discounted rate of $20 for being a member of Temple Emanuel. Send an to Robbie Levine at rl740@aol.com and she will issue a statement of membership which you can bring to BJ's for group membership status. If you are renewing at mid-year the rates will be prorated. I am looking forward to another enriching year of studying and learning together. Chag Sameach. 4 Page 4 Volume 11 Issue 2 Dear Congregants, On behalf of my family and the Temple Board of Directors, I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year. Here at Temple Emanuel, we have had a hectic summer with the resignation of Rabbi Krieger. As you have heard from our President, Stuart Jacobs, we plan on having two search committees one for the immediate position of High Holiday Rabbi and one for the permanent Rabbi position at the temple. As Stuart stated in his column, by the time you read this, a very capable High Holiday Rabbi will have already been selected. In this holiday season of hope, renewal, and reflection, I ask that you all remember the adage, when one door closes, another door opens. Although the loss of Rabbi Krieger may be difficult for many of us, change is upon us, and we need to remember that change can and will have a very good and positive outcome for us. I feel I should close with a quote from the Amidah as I believe it can provide guidance for us all: My God, keep my tongue from evil, my lips from lies. Help me ignore those who slander me. Let me be humble before all. Open my heart to your Torah, so that I may pursue Your Mitzvot. Frustrate the designs of those who plot evil against me. Make nothing of their schemes. Do so for the sake of Your power, Your holiness and Your Torah. Answer my prayer for the deliverance of Your people. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to You, my Rock and my Redeemer. He who brings peace to His universe will bring peace to us and all the people Israel. Amen.
