1 Friday Services start at 7:30 PM Saturday Services start at 10:30 AM July/August, 2017 A Reform Congregation Volume 13, Issue 1 FROM THE RABBI A Jewish thinker who used the pen name Achad HaAm once wrote, "More than Israel has kept the Sabbath, the Sabbath has kept Israel." And a very prominent Twentieth Century Reform rabbi by the name of Leo Baeck wrote, "There is no Judaism without the Sabbath." So it is sad that for so many Jews today the seventh day of the week is just another day without any Jewish content. There are many Temple Shalom members who attend Shabbat services on a regular basis. But, unfortunately, there are also a number who attend only occasionally or rarely. Some of us have lost that sense of commitment which is an important part of the Jewish heritage. The following are some reasons people give for not attending Shabbat services: 1. I can't read Hebrew. The prayer book we use, Mishkan T'filah, has English transliterations next to the Hebrew text. 2. I don't understand Hebrew. Every Hebrew prayer is translated into English. in addition, a large part of the service is read in English. 3. I don't like to go out at night. Temple Shalom has two Shabbat services every week, one at 7:30 P.M. on Friday evenings and the other at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday mornings. Take your choice or attend both. 4. Religious services are too long. The Friday evening service lasts about an hour and the Saturday morning service lasts about an hour and a half. 5. I don't like long sermons. The sermon on Friday evenings lasts about ten minutes. There is no sermon on Saturday mornings. Instead of a sermon, on Saturday mornings there is a discussion of the weekly Torah portion with extensive participation by the congregants in attendance. I like to socialize. There is an extensive Oneg Shabbat with refreshments and socialization following services on Friday evenings. On Saturday mornings, there is a small Kiddush following services, but everyone is invited to go as part of a group to Eggs Up Grill for lunch. Many of the things you do in life you do out of habit. You develop patterns you repeatedly follow. Once you start coming to services on a regular basis, it will become a habit. You won't even have to think about it. It will become part of your weekly routine. Just like a weekly mah jongg or card game. Or watching your favorite program on tv. Rabbi David Weissman Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

FROM THE PRESIDENT: As we start our Twelfth year as the Reform Temple in Myrtle Beach, I look forward to another successful year. We pray for good health and well being for our leadership, our Rabbi, and each and every member of our congregation. Our Board is complete after our elections and I want to welcome our new Board Member Joan Paxton, Secretary Michelle Foels, Members at large Natalie Kramer, Flo Pflaster, Mary Ann Lempert, as well as our Board members that continue to serve. To our wonderful Sisterhood, congratulations to Laurie Ward, her Board and all the ladies that are part of Sisterhood. We have seen a lot of growth over the past years, and I can say unequivocally this past year was a resounding success. Good programs, good activities, wonderfully prepared and run holiday functions, and to top all of this, fundraising that worked. Our Temple is grateful for all the effort and thought that went into the planning execution of each job. WELL DONE. Sisterhood s contribution to the financial well being of Temple Shalom was a gift of $3,500.This was overwhelming and gratefully received by your President at our Annual Congregational meeting. As the Temple Board and Rabbi David start to prepare for the High Holidays, we will be sending out the schedule and all other information mid August. Please be sure that you are in good standing (this refers to dues) It is a wonderful felling and experience to participate and have a part in the High Holiday services. This privilege is reserved for all members in good standing. The billing for the Fiscal year will go out after July 4th Holiday and the first quarter dues will be due at that time (or you must make arrangements with our treasurer Bob Post). I wish each of you a wonderful Summer. If traveling be safe. As always it is good to see you and greet you around Temple. Lily Ann Revitch

At this time, I am very proud to report that Sisterhood, with the support of the entire congregation, was able to donate $3, to Temple Shalom at its annual Congregational Meeting in June. We plan to build on this success and continue to make the upcoming year even better! Thanks again for all of your support. Our early fundraisers Attraction Books, Challah Sale and New Year s Cards will begin this summer. Flyers will be sent out via to the entire congregation in early August. Please look for them and respond with your participation and support as soon as they become available. I also encourage all female members of the congregation to become members of Sisterhood.
