2 Rabbi Charles L. Arian From the Rabbi s Study Michael Goldman President@kehilatshalom.org President s Message Dear Friends: What is Chanukah? Interestingly enough, the Gemara in Tractate Shabbat introduces its discussion of the historical background of Chanukah by asking precisely that question. It seems odd; one could assume that the meaning of Chanukah was well known. But in fact, the Gemara's discussion of Chanukah demonstrates that what Chanukah means for one generation is not necessarily what it means for another. The Gemara's discussion entirely ignores the Maccabees defeat of the Seleucid Empire and focuses instead on the miracle of the oil. Prof. Arnold Eisen, the Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary wrote about the meaning of religious ritual in his seminal work "Rethinking Modern Judaism." Professor Eisen described certain of our religious observances as "regular performances which lend performers the conviction that they are carrying on the essence of their ancestor's faith and practice even while they alter both belief and observance to suit their new circumstances." Or in less academic prose, we convince ourselves that we are doing precisely what previous generations of Jews did, even while we modify both the practice and the significance we ascribe to it. That is why for Israeli Jews, Chanukah is about the Maccabees and their restoration of Jewish national independence, while for American Jews, Chanukah is about freedom of religion. Chanukah has evolved over the generations. Originally, it was a festival celebrating the Hasmonean victory over the Seleucid Empire and the subsequent rededication of the Temple. In rabbinic times, it evolved into a celebration of Continued on Page 3 Hello, Everyone. I hope that each of you are well. If you have any news you wish to share with your Kehilah family, please let me know karian@kehilatshalom.org. I wish each of you a happy and healthy November. Be well, Keleigh Keleigh s Kurrents Karian@kehilatshalom.org Shalom I hope everybody has had a Happy Thanksgiving!!! We had a wonderful Shabbat service this Saturday, November 21 celebrating Simcha Shabbat, and thanking Rabbi Raphael for his assistance during the summer when Rabbi Arian was sick. Rabbi Raphael read torah, Rabbi Arian offered some superb insights into the Torah and Haftorah readings, and presented a thought provoking Drash and Kiddush Konversation. You really should arrange to be with us more often - - without question, it s worth your time. Last month, I encouraged you to join in, help out, and volunteer. This time around, I thought I d mention a few specific opportunities. First, we will be working together to provide Christmas dinner at the Men s shelter on Gude Drive. When you see the announcement and menu, you can prepare something, buy something, donate to the project, and/or come help serve. Whatever you choose, I can promise you it ll be a rewarding Mitzvah. If you d like to be a part of this, give Billye a call. An easy Mitzvah - - just show up! This time of year presents a challenge to our efforts at evening Minyan. If you are available, stop in at 7:45 PM Sunday Thursday (6:30 PM Fridays) and help us make our Minyan. Our office has always been blessed with volunteers to help get the needed work done. We could use some more help here, and this would be a great time to learn the ropes. If you can help, give our new Administrator Leann a call. Men s Club is looking for programming ideas. If you d like to see something happen, and are willing to help make it happen, give Tom Loggie or Richard Jaffe a call. The Catering Committee routinely puts forth unroutine food for our Kiddushes, Friday night dinners, and special events. They can really use some help. If you would like to join them, call Tom Loggie or Wendy Schneider Levinson. Continued on page 3 2
3 From the Rabbi s Study (Continued from Page 2) the "miracle of the oil." In more recent days, for Zionism it became a celebration of the victory of the few over the many (in some sense returning to its origins) while in America it became the festival of religious freedom. But is there an even older Chanukah than these? Jewish liturgy has three primary themes: Creation, Revelation, and Redemption. We celebrate God as the creator of the universe. We celebrate God as the giver of the Torah. And we celebrate God as the redeemer of the world. Our liturgy, like Judaism itself, balances the universal and the particular. While the Torah was God's special gift to the Jewish people, all human beings experience God's strength and wisdom in the power of creation. The earth was given to all people, not just the Jews. If you can spend a Tuesday or Friday with us once a month to help set up for our Duplicate Bridge guests, let Larry Beck know. If you can lead Erev Shabbat services at Sunrise Assisted Living one Friday a month, let me know. Chanukah is here. Bobbie and I extend our best wishes to each and every one of you for a joyous Chanukah. Sincerely, Mike President s Message (Continued from Page 2) In some sense Chanukah is a very particularistic holiday, whether as the holiday of the Maccabees or of the miracle of the oil. But we American Jews, in our emphasis on religious freedom as the meaning of the holiday, have to some extent universalized it. Perhaps this is at least part of the reason why a very minor holiday has become one which is widely acknowledged by general American society. There is a Baraita (an ancient rabbinic teaching which reached its final form in Mishnaic times) which indicates that this might be so: Our rabbis taught: when the first man (Adam) saw the daylight hours were becoming shorter and shorter, he said, "Woe is me! Perhaps because I have sinned, the world is becoming dark around me and is returning to chaos (tohu va-vohu). This is the death sentence declared upon me by Heaven!" He sat for eight days in fasting and prayer. After the winter solstice when he saw the days becoming longer and longer, he said, "This is simply the way of the world!" He went and made an eight-day festival. (BT Avodah Zarah 8a) The Baraita doesn't explicitly say that the festival Adam established was Chanukah, but it sure sounds like it. Rabbi David Hoffman of the Jewish Theological seminary writes that Chanukah "has, in its distant past, the most universal of messages. It is a holiday about experiencing fear, vulnerability, and darkness and not being consumed. It is a holiday that reminds us that light and security will return again, as sure as we know darkness will return. These are the cycles of life. The challenge is remembering that the darkness will, in fact, retreat. So this too, like the story of the oil, is a story of profound faith." May we all spread light this Chanukah season! Simcha Shabbat To participate in this special service and Kiddush, please return the form below by Dec. 10, I/we will will not attend on Dec. 12 Name # Attending Phone Simcha L'shalom, I/we would like to help sponsor Kiddush $ 36 $ Rabbi Charles L. Photo taken by. Bob Golberg Matt Goldstein from the Chesed Fund provided instruction in (CPR + AED) on Sunday, November 8 at Kehilat Shalom. If given promptly, the use of (CPR + AED) can dramatically improve the chances of survival for an individual who has undergone sudden cardiac arrest. The training session utilized a specialized training mannequin known as Resusci Anne on which the participants practiced chest compressions, rescue breathing, and the use of a training AED device. Instruction on how to perform (CPR and AED) on children and infants was also provided. It is important that we have individuals who are likely to be present in the event that anyone undergoes sudden cardiac arrest while at Kehilat Shalom. This is critical in that the chance of survival from sudden cardiac arrest decreases with each minute that has passed and it will generally take several minutes for professional rescuers to arrive on the scene. Please note that Kehilat Shalom s AED is located in our main social hall. The box in which it is located is alarmed and should be opened only in the event of emergency. 13

16 Jews united for justice Community Meeting with District 39 State Delegation Adult Education Bible Class Rabbi Arian s bi-weekly Bible class has spent the past three years looking at the weekly Haftarah, and our studies have added to our knowledge and appreciation of these readings which follow the Torah reading every Shabbat. Now we turn to a different type of study: the weekly Torah portion with Rashi s commentary. Rashi ( ) lived in Troyes, France and is considered the commentator par excellence in helping to explain the plain meaning of the text. His commentary is considered indispensable for students of all levels and his lead to over 300 supercommentaries, meaning commentaries on Rashi s commentary itself. We will look at some selected verses along with Rashi s commentary, and discover what question Rashi is trying to answer and what his understanding adds to our knowledge of the text.
