2 From the Rabbi s Desk Adult Education by Rabbi Mark R. Raphael The last bulletin article. Except for my childhood home ( ) in Westbury, Long Island, Kehilat Shalom and Montgomery Village is my second longest home. As I move to another stage in my professional career, several thoughts. First, the future of Kehilat Shalom is dependent upon some solution to our financial challenge. We cannot remain in survival mode, expending incredible energy every year on making ends meet and be a healthy community. I hope with new leadership, professional and lay, new ideas will create solutions to the fundamental challenge of paying for our community. I therefore ask everyone (member and non-member) who reads this to consider how you can help maintain our caring, but stressed community. I ask everyone to give my successor a chance to succeed with his/her new ideas about the directions and activities of our synagogue in the 21 st Century. Second, after months of networking in various careers, I want to teach full-time, preferably in one of the Day Schools. My second choice, which I ve begun to explore, is to do chaplaincy part-time and teach part-time. Diane and I do plan to stay in the area, but my intention is to stay away from Kehilat Shalom, for a while, to empower the new rabbi to be THE Rabbi. I would be honored though to help out my successor at his or her request. How am I feeling? There have been so many bittersweet moments even this past month. I ve started experiencing the last of so many regular and special activities (ex. ECC Shabbat Sing) that have been part of my life within our community. It s hard to say goodbye, but I am looking forward to working a little less, being home most nights of the week, not having to prepare a weekly sermon and just davening for myself every Shabbat. Next to the last: What am I going to miss the most? Obviously it s the people, even more than the Sanctuary. If there were two things I wish I could change among all the small and big mistakes of 16 years, it would be to have found the time for an additional phone call to someone in need or pain and to have written many more thank you notes to everyone who made a difference for our community and to me personally. At the end of the month, please don t use my office . My semiprofessional is rabbimarkr@gmail.com, if you want to me. My home phone will remain in the Membership Directory. And if you Facebook, please feel free to friend me I d be delighted. Finally, thank you for the honor and joys of serving as the Rabbi of Kehilat Shalom for the past 16 years. Bible Study Siyyum for 10 years of our study group with the completion of Deuteronomy Thursday June 7 at 8:10 pm Join us as we complete Chapter 34 of Devarim and celebrate having rigorously studied the entire Five Books of Moses verse by verse, over a decade. Mishna Yomit Final Class to complete Masechet Parah Wednesday June 13 8:10 pm Executive Director s Message By Judi Kranz, FSA, ATz As I enter my final days as Executive Director of Kehilat Shalom, I look back to the first day I started working here in June No one could have predicted that I would be retiring, for real this time, 32 years later. When I look back, I remember all the joyous occasions we shared as well as the sad times. Most of all I remember the sharing and the people who have come thru the doors of this congregation. It is the memories of you, the congregants and your families, that I will cherish the most. I want to thank you all for the kindness, cooperation and respect you have shown me over these many years. I hope that I have contributed to the betterment of Kehilat Shalom. I wish each of you every happiness and much success in the future as you begin a new phase in the life of the congregation with a new spiritual leader. At the end of June I will enter a new phase of my life retirement. I am thankful that I am able to look forward to many new things, not the least of which is spending more time with my husband Fred and my beloved grandchildren, Coby, Rachel, Archie and Layla. I hope to keep in touch with many of you and would love to hear from you. I have set up a new account judikranz@gmail.com L Shalom Rabbi Mark Raphael 2

3 Volunteers of the Month: Elisa Linowes & Rhoda Press Elisa Linowes is having a busy year, as she is currently serving on the Executive Committee as Vice President for Administration, she is co-chairing Rabbi Raphael s Retirement Celebration this spring, and she is co-advisor of the Machar youth group. Elisa does it all with intelligence, humor, and a deeply felt commitment to our community. In recent years, Elisa has served as Financial Secretary and been part of the planning team for a number of successful events and programs, including the Cantors Concert. Elisa is an active parent volunteer and over the years she has consistently given of her time and energy to support teachers and students at both the Early Childhood Center and the Religious School. Rhoda Press is one of the behind the scenes volunteers at Kehilat Shalom, who you might not see leading a meeting or giving a speech, but is almost always on the list of people who are working tirelessly to make everything possible. Rhoda is currently serving as Financial Secretary, a position she held for a total of four years. Rhoda is perfectly suited to the position of Financial Secretary, in which she works with families who have requested financial aid, and she brings compassion, discretion, and an understanding of the big picture to her work. Rhoda is also serving as co-chair of Rabbi Raphael s Retirement Celebration and has previously been chair of the School Board and co-chair of Kehilat Shalom s 36th Anniversary Celebration. For all of your services past, present, and future, we say Yasher Koach, Elisa Linowes and Rhoda Press, may you go from strength to strength! Object: SHABBAT GUEST PROGRAM Share a Shabbat meal with fellow congregants at home. Make new friends. Guests will receive an invitation to a volunteer host s home where they ll spend some quality time learning Shabbat rituals or prayers, getting to know each other a little better, making some new friends, maybe singing a few songs, all while in a fun Shabbat setting! If you are interested in being a guest or a host, or just want more information, please reach out to one of the chairs of the Shabbat Guest Committee: Jeff Lerner: mar_jeff@comcast.net or Marilyn Fliegler: sroolik@aol.com 3

4 Life and Learning Religious School News Youth Links by Linda Siegel, Director of Education TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT GOD Belief in the existence of God is fundamental in biblical Judaism and central to the survival of the Jewish people. As adults, our understanding of and relationship to God is often assumed rather than examined and enriched. Many Jews assiduously avoid speaking about the God concept. As educators, we have an important role to play in the fostering of spiritual growth in your children, and we have, this year taken steps to open up the God conversation. So how do children begin to think about God as other than a white-bearded man who lives in the sky? This year, for grades 4-7, we created lesson plans designed to invite openness and reflection in the classroom to answer questions about God, explore and experience God, and try to accelerate faith in themselves in relation to God. Some of the concepts to which we exposed your children were revealed through attempting to answer the following questions: Does God exist? What is God all about? What are the basic Jewish concepts of God? What does God look like? Where do God and prayer intersect? How do you feel when you feel God? What are ways that we talk to God and hear responses? How do we find God in sacred moments? What role did/does God play in Creation? How do we work in partnership with God? How is God involved in miracles? Why do bad things happen to good people? What would God do in this situation? We hope that this curriculum has provided intellectual and spiritual sustenance for your children s further exploration as they continue on their spiritual path. We hope that students were encouraged to continue and search and that you can all share in this journey together. And all of your children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of your children (Isaiah 54:13). Simcha Shabbat On Saturday morning, June 30, please join us for a community celebration of birthdays, wedding anniversaries, graduations and other simchas. To participate in this special service and Kiddush, please return the form below by June 25, I/we will will not attend on June 30. For those still in Kadima, Ellen Milhiser will be the co-advisor with Sherri Holzel next year. Elisa Linowes and Julie Greenwald will be back as our Machar advisors. We will still have some of our own programming, but we will partner with Shaare Torah to enable us to do some big events like bowling which was a big success. Cindy Siskind has offered to help with Bonim and Becky Rutchik will return as the Youth Assistant. If you have any questions about the new Teen program, please do not hesitate to call me over the summer.
