1 Ahava B Shem Yeshua Love In The Name of Jesus Monthly Newsletter Volume 1, Issue 2 December 2014 From Our Messianic Leader.. Festival of Lights Hanukkah (or Chanukkah) is the Festival of Dedication, also known as the Festival of Lights. It is an eight-day festival. Hanukkah 2014 begins in the evening of Tuesday, December 16 th and ends in the evening of Wednesday 24 th. The Holiday of Lights celebrating the miracle of a little oil that lasted eight days, and continues to illuminate our lives to this day. What a wonderful time of the year to remember and commemorate the great miracle that God has done for us, by giving us new light and new life, His son Yeshua HaMachiach. Scripture tells us of Yeshua celebrating Hanukkah in the Temple. As Believers, we too can and should celebrate the Festival of Lights as we rededicate our lives to Adonai and acknowledge Him as the perfect and true light of this world. The Light of the World Yeshua preached three sermons in which he declared Himself the light of the world, and all three could have been during Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. (It is not clear exactly from the text when these incidents happened, but it was sometime between the Feast of Tabernacles and the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah); both of these celebrations focused on light. (John 12:35-36) says;. 35 So Yeshua said to them, For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. 36 While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light. These things Yeshua spoke, and He went away and hid Himself from them. John 8:12 12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life. And John 9:5 While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world. 4 Page 4 Ahava B Shem Yeshua MINISTRY UPDATES Ahava Youth Ministry The Ahava Youth held their first meeting on November 1 st. This ice-breaker session was to introduce the youth to each other and lay the foundation for our ministry as we look forward to growth, both in numbers, as well as growth towards spiritual maturity as disciples of Master Yeshua. During this session we spoke about how the vision for our ministry is best symbolized as a sprawling oak tree. Isaiah 61 speaks about Messiah heralding the good news, healing the brokenhearted, proclaiming freedom to the captives and bringing those bound in darkness out into the light. In verse 3 Isaiah tells us that this salvation was being poured out so that they will be called oaks of righteousness planted by HaShem, in which he takes pride (that He may be glorified). What does this mean for our ministry going forward? As we aim to become these plantings of the L-rd, each month we will be focusing on one of the 4 elements of the oaks of righteousness. The roots represent our identity within the Messianic Jewish movement, as well as within our mishpacha. Originally beginning as a sect of Judaism, we have a deep and rich root system from which to learn and explore. The trunk represents our unity with one another. As we seek to follow Master Yeshua, we will learn how important community is. The branches represent our discipleship in the broad sense meaning how we live out our lives as disciples of Yeshua each day. Finally, the leaves are the produce of our discipleship, which is our outreach to our Prescott community and beyond. Capture the vision with us! Chelsea

5 Volume 1, Issue 2 Page 5 Lighting the Menorah on the First Night of Chanukkah The special Menorah used for Chanukkah is called a Hanukkiyah it has nine candle holders in a row and the middle holder is slightly higher than the other eight. The middle candle is known as the shamash, or servant candle. On the first night of Chanukkah and on all other nights during the holiday, the middle candle (called a shamash) is lit first. The shamash does not count as one of the Chanukkah candles, but is used to light all the other candles. Families usually light their Chanukkah menorah directly or soon after nightfall. If Chanukkah begins on Shabbat, the Hanukkiyah should be lit just before sundown. Place a candle in the rightmost position on your menorah. Now hold the shamash and recite the following blessings: Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech HaOlam, asher kidshanu b mitzvotav v tzivanu l hadlik ner shel Chanukkah. Blessed are You, O Lord Our God, Ruler of the Universe, Who has sanctified us with Your commandments and commanded us to kindle the lights of Chanukkah. Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech HaOlam, she asah nisim l avoteinu, b yamim haheim bazman hazeh. Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, Who made miracles for our forefathers in those days at this time. Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech HaOlam, shehekheyanu, v kiyamanu vehegianu lazman hazeh. Blessed are You, O Lord Our God, Ruler of the Universe, Who has kept us alive, sustained us and brought us to this season. After these blessings are said the shamash is lit and the first Chanukkah candle (the one you placed in the rightmost position of your menorah) is kindled using the flame from the shamash. Place the shamash in its place on your menorah. (Usually there will be a special spot for it in the middle of your menorah.) Lighting the Menorah on All Other Nights of Chanukkah During all other nights of Chanukkah begin by placing your candles in your menorah from right to left. Not counting the shamash, the number of Chanukkah candles in your menorah should match the night of Chanukkah. For instance, if it is the 5th night of Chanukkah you would place 5 Chanukkah candles in your menorah. Light the shamash first, then kindle the remaining candles from left to right. This is the reverse order of how the candles were placed in your Hanukkiyah, so the last candle you put in the menorah should be lit first. As you light the candles recite the following two blessings: Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech HaOlam, asher kidshanu b mitzvotav v tzivanu l hadlik ner shel Chanukkah. After the candles are lit place the shamash in its place on your menorah. It is a very wonderful time of the year for the children of Israel and all Jewish people all over the world. For a Messianic Jewish person it tells us great things about our Messiah. Also, the Hanukkah menorah is more than just a 9 branch menorah used once a year. It tells of our Messiah and the Holy Spirit. On December 20th, Dee will be giving a teaching on Hanukkah. Be sure to come, you will learn some amazing things about this particular Festival of the Lord.
