2 From the Rabbi s Desk by Rabbi Mark Raphael One of the central foundations of my Jewish identity is a love of the State of Israel. I was a student in Israel during my junior year of college and my third year of Rabbinical School. I have traveled to Israel on missions and vacations an average of twice every decade. As for many of us, although I don t live in Israel, whenever I go back, I feel a sense of home. Yom Ha atzmaut is celebrated this year on May 10. Again this year it is a sober celebration. Our trepidation about Iran acquiring nuclear weapon capability and the thousands of rockets in the hands of Hamas and Hezbollah only grows. In March the murder of a family and the death at a bus stop in Jerusalem reminded us that terror is still a part of Israel s reality. The changes in the Arab political map also fill us with concern. The regime changes and the moves toward democracy fill us with hope for moderation and also fears that fundamentalist political parties could gain power in countries that were favorable or at least neutral toward Israel. The changes on the Arab street with the availability of social media can be used for peace or for violence. It s been a strange year also on the American relationship with Israel. JStreet has nuanced its criticism of Israel. Richard Goldstone rescinded his U.N. report on Israel s actions in Gaza. Our country remains Israel s best ally and friend even as the relationship seems sometimes strained. My biggest concern is for the more distant future. Those who experienced the birth of Israel in 1948 have been, in large majority, solid supporters of Israel s wellbeing. While a plurality of Jews continues to be staunch political and financial supporters of the Jewish homeland, studies indicate that fewer and fewer Jews feel strongly positive about Israel. It is crucial that our children visit and experience Israel. We send a handful of kids every year from Kehilat Shalom to Alexander Muss High School in Israel and on trips like Birthright. Studies also indicate that today there are few immersion experiences as powerful and positive as a learning experience in Israel to enhance one s Jewish identity. We encourage every young adult to experience the history and spirituality of Jewish life in Israel. So a sober Happy Birthday this month to the Jewish State with all its flaws, challenges, joys and hopes for a good year. For full Mitzvah Day Schedule and registration form, see page 7. For an open letter from Dr. David Jacobsohn of Children s National Medical Center about Be Brave and Shave, see page 13. MITZVAH DAY Collections Please help us make a difference! CONGREGATION MEETING, ELECTION & BUDGET APPROVAL Monday, May 16 8 pm by Mindy Silverstein, Director of Education Every year at this time a paradox exists; as we close down the school for the year, our activities rev up. This year is no exception. During the past month, we ve had three parent meetings for our incoming kindergarten through 5 th grade parents. We held an Open House for prospective members. Our 4 th graders performed The Wedding, an original play written by the 4 th grade teacher, Alexis Itkin. The 6 th graders have been studying immigration all year with the culminating activity, the Generations Fair, held April 3. Jessica Bleich proudly displays her Generations Fair project Our Upper School Students heard from 3 different speakers: a group of Ethiopian Jews who spoke of their experiences in Ethiopia and the path they took to get to Israel; Anton Goodman, Israeli Community Shaliach to the DC Community; and Phyllis Solomon, recruiter from the High School in Israel program. Both Mr. Goodman and Ms. Solomon spoke about Israel. Later this month, our students are going to Beth El of Montgomery County for a teen Yom Ha atzmaut communitywide celebration. And of course, Upper School would not be complete without our Confirmation and Graduation celebrations in the upcoming weeks. Our younger students visited Israel with the arrival of the Big Map of Israel. Our 3 rd graders are preparing for their Shabbat Service where they receive their own copy of the Siddur Sim Shalom. The kindergarten through 2 nd grades are also preparing to participate in the May 13 th Family Service. And the 5 th grade class has been working very hard in preparing for its performance on Israel. If you haven t already done so, please turn in your registration form and fee for to the school office. Our last day of school is Sunday, May 22 and Tuesday, May 24. 4

Most people have more books than they have room for. This was an opportunity to clean out books that had been read and were collecting dust to make room for new books. A variety of books were brought in, some non-fiction, fiction, mysteries, chick lit, etc. We had fun looking at the books and finding new ones to read. Members are readers. Books of Jewish interest that were left after the exchange were donated to the synagogue library. Ethel Ginsberg, Co- President, took the rest to donate to the Friends of the Library. At this meeting, we also discussed some ideas for our participation on Mitzvah Day; On April 12, Rabbi Raphael talked to the group on a subject related to the upcoming Passover Holiday. Meetings were not held on April 19 and 26 due to the holiday. Meeting Schedule: May 3 40 th Anniversary of the War on Cancer Marcia Litwack May 10 Current Events May 17 To be announced May 24 Game Day May 31 To be announced As programs are finalized, they will be listed in the weekly announcements. She is always ready to help and her contagious enthusiasm encourages others to contribute as well. We are so grateful to Amanda for all she does for the Kehilat Shalom Early Childhood Center. by Amanda Fogle, ECC PTA Co-President Our second honoree, Stephanie Fleischer, is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand with anything the PTA needs. From volunteering for numerous committees, to watching ECC kids during parent-teacher conferences, to working with Michelle Bailen to provide wonderful lunches for Tot Shabbat, Stephanie's support and dedication can always be counted on. Stephanie is also extremely helpful in the classrooms, where she has done a lot of subbing and gotten to know most of the children in the school. Stephanie is flexible, friendly and eagerly does anything she can to help. We will surely miss her next year when her son moves on from the ECC. Thank you Stephanie for all that you do! BE BRAVE AND SHAVE : A LETTER FROM DR. JACOBSOHN Dear Friends, I can t thank you enough for your willingness to shave your heads in support of our mission! I m the Chief of Bone Marrow Transplant at Children s National and thrilled that our Outpatient Clinic project has inspired so many to want to help our children and their families. Daily I see the anxious looks of our parents whose children are fighting cancer and sickle cell disease, and I help them through the difficult decision to pursue transplantation. The process is overwhelming, scary, hopeful, and optimistic for many. Having a safe place to return after they are allowed to return home is integral to their continued recovery. I m ready to give the go ahead to the engineers, and your support has given us great strength internally to push this important project to the head of a line of renovations. I look forward to meeting you on May 1 at the Be Brave and Shave at Kehilat Shalom! Cheers, David A. Jacobsohn, MD, ScM Chief, Division of Blood and Marrow Transplantation Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders Children s National Medical Center TO DONATE TO BE BRAVE AND SHAVE: Event/KS-Mitzvah-Day-BMT-Shave 13

14 FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION... Friends and Family, After being a Kehilat Shalom member since before I can even remember, I have inevitably instilled in my mind the value of giving, the value of tzedakah, or, as I would say in my high school years of being the USY Tikkun Olam Officer, the value of Tikkun Olam. Now, setting aside a portion of my income or salary to go towards a special foundation or cause comes naturally for me, but many people in our community either do not think of fundraising in this way or they forget to support the companies for which they originally commit. Well, there is one cause in particular that is truly close to my heart because of the literal effects it has had on my life in the past 3 years (of my mere 22 years of age) and I can only hope that each of you reading this will offer to take two minutes of your time to visit my website and consider making a donation towards the Sjogren's Syndrome Foundation in my honor: This autoimmune disease has taken a toll on my life and has also afflicted several other members of our Kehilat Shalom community; thus, my goal is to create a significant impact in the foundation to get us closer to finding a cure for the disease so that we, as a community, can prevent others from going through what I have experienced. Please visit the website to hear more about my story and how you can help. I recently walked on behalf of the Sjogren's patients nationwide for the 2011 Greater Washington Region Sjogren's Walkabout on April 2nd in the Reston Town Center. Thank you in advance for your donation and support. Call or with any questions: or sweetp1238@aol.com With love, Paula Sosin In this market, you need a good real estate agent. In fact, you need two!
