2 Rabbi Charles L. Arian From the Rabbi s Study Michael Goldman President@kehilatshalom.org President s Message How Much Do You Really Know About Israel? Dear Friends: Israel is an important part of our identity as Jews. On Shabbat mornings we have a prayer for the welfare of the State of Israel. On Yom Kippur we have an appeal for Israel Bonds. We encourage our teens to visit Israel, and whenever we have an Ask the Rabbi session for Kiddush Konversation, a lot of the questions invariably deal with Israel. But how much do you really know about Israel? A few years ago I create an Israel General Knowledge Quiz which I gave my students during the first session of a class on modern Israel. See how much you know; answers are at the bottom. Good luck and have fun! Israel General Knowledge Quiz 1. In what year did Israel gain its independence? 2. Who is the current Prime Minister of Israel? 3. Who was the first Prime Minister of Israel? 4. Who is the current President of Israel? 5. Who was the first President of Israel? 6. What is the legislature or parliament of Israel called? How many members does it have? 7. In what year was the Six Day War fought? 8. In what year was the Yom Kippur War fought? Continued on Page 3 Keleigh s Kurrents Karian@kehilatshalom.org Hello, Everyone. I hope that each of you are well and gearing up for time with family and friends at Thanksgiving. This is an opportunity for me to say thank you for the support and love you have shown Charles and I over the last few months; you folks are good, caring people and a real blessing. A huge mazel tov to Gail Lieberman and Bill Hanson! Their son just graduated from the police academy in Louisiana and won 2 out of 3 of the highest achievement awards. Way to go! We are also proud of Aiden Ballonoff, son of Janet and Les Ballonoff, who just advanced to his yellow belt. Wow! Zakai Kelly, son of Leah Kelly and grandson of Linda Gottsagen, just competed in a tournament at Han Mi Martial Arts. I don t know about you folks, but I rest easier knowing we have these fine young men around to protect us if needed. (Continued on Page 6) 2 Hi- So, now that the dust has settled on our Holiday season Boy, it was good! I mean, everything went really well. Don t you think? The Services were meaningful. Our cantor Kim provided us with an authentic, traditional, absolutely beautiful musical back-drop, facilitating the work we each had at hand. The Rabbi was brilliant as ever, keeping us moving along while sharing with us his teachings, his Drashes, and thoughts. Our volunteers did a wonderful job reading Torah, Haftorah, preliminary services ushering, greeting, handing out Aliyot and other honors. Sisterhood came through with a superb Break Fast at Holiday s end. Men s Club built our Sukkah, and we continued our tradition of Spaghetti in the Sukkah. Yasher Koach to all who helped make it all possible. So, now that the dust has settled on our Holiday season, the kids are back in school, you re re-establishing your family rhythm, Put a little more Shul in your life! We are here ready, willing, and able to enrich your Jewish lives in endless ways. Try us out and see. Our Erev Shabbat services now start at 6:30. They are short and sweet, with a brief Drash from the Rabbi, and an Oneg. Check it out! Men s Club is inviting your ideas, so give them a try. Call or Richard Jaffe or Tom Loggie and let them know what you d like them to do. Adult Education is featuring Torah study with Rabbi Arian on the 1 st and 3 rd Thursday of each month, with a focus on Rashi s commentary. We are doing a study program jointly with Shaare Torah on the topic of Social Justice. Sisterhood activities are in full swing, with Mah Jongg, Sip n Schmooz, Bake n Babble, Dine Around, Book Club, Crafters Club, lots of things happening. Our Library has some incredible books waiting for you. Take a peek! The Religious School is up and running, as is the post-bar/bat Mitzvah Kavod (Honor) Society. They get to meet with the Rabbi off site to think and learn out of the box. So far, they met at Panera s and in the Arian Sukkah. Continued on page 3

We honor her productivity, independence, creativity, and her orientation to a hopeful future with the 2016 Torah Fund pin/pendant. Women s League s support of the Torah Fund Campaign helps strengthen Conservative/Masorti Judaism throughout the world and enhances the Jewish community by recognizing and appreciating our diverse families.

11 President s Message (Continued from Page 3) - If you have an idea of something for us to do, let us know, share it. And, share it with your friends. Indeed, you re going to end up owning that idea, and making it happen, and that s as it should be. Fourth - We tell the world what we are doing; Fifth - We encourage those who can to increase their financial support Sixth - We continue to find ways to never turn anyone away for lack of resources Seventh - We continue to rent out space to folks in the area with need for space This vision will succeed only if you all want it to. You need to be willing to help, to commit more of your time and resources. To those of you who are suffering hard times financially, we really appreciate your doing what you can. Please don t think I m thinking of you with my message. ***But, to those of you who are fortunate to be able to have choices, we need you to move Kehilat Shalom up in the food chain of your priorities. *** The simple truth is that when we were a big institution, you could accept the moral obligation to join, to pay dues or not. Some chose to say I don t really need a Shul, I don t attend, except for holidays. Some opted to just buy tickets, and that s wonderful. We want people to buy tickets. We want to be here, and to assure we all have a place to be. But that requires being able to pay the mortgage, and have a core of members who care about our long term survival. And, as I mentioned, we are no longer an impersonal institution with a life of its own. We are now a relatively small group of like minded people who share an interest in our continued existence. Even through my short stay so far on this hot seat, I can assure you that people have no qualms about calling us when they are in need because of a family emergency, whether or not they are members. And, we want to help. Because we are a group of members, but we are here to serve the community. But I think the community has a responsibility too. A responsibility to do their part to see to it that we remain available for them. It comes back to the fact that we re no longer a big institution. We re a group of people who share an interest in our continued existence. 15 New Adult Education Bible Class Rabbi Arian s bi-weekly Bible class has spent the past three years looking at the weekly Haftarah, and our studies have added to our knowledge and appreciation of these readings which follow the Torah reading every Shabbat. Now we turn to a different type of study: the weekly Torah portion with Rashi s commentary. Rashi ( ) lived in Troyes, France and is considered the commentator par excellence in helping to explain the plain meaning of the text. His commentary is considered indispensable for students of all levels and his lead to over 300 supercommentaries, meaning commentaries on Rashi s commentary itself. We will look at some selected verses along with Rashi s commentary, and discover what question Rashi is trying to answer and what his understanding adds to our knowledge of the text. The class will meet the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each calendar month right after evening minyan. 15
