2 Rabbi Charles L. Arian F r o m t h e R ab b i s S t u d y Michael Goldman President@kehilatshalom.org P r e s i d e n t s M e s s a g e Dear Friends: You have probably heard over the last few days of Brock Turner, the 20- year-old Stanford University student, convicted on three counts of sexually assaulting a 23-year-old woman after a party, who received a sentence of six months when the maximum sentence could have been as much as 20 years. The judge gave Turner such a lenient sentence because he was concerned about the severe impact a longer sentence might have had on him. I m hesitant to comment on verdicts and sentences based on what I read online or see on television, because I ve come to learn that very often we get only part of the story. As both a rabbi and as a former public official (I was chairman of the Ethics Commission of the city of Norwich, CT), I ve had people reach conclusions about things I did or said, or didn t do or didn t say, on the basis of inaccurate or incomplete information. So while the sentence certainly seems absurdly lenient, I m hesitant to jump on the bandwagon calling for removal of the judge in the case. Perhaps there is more here than meets the eye. Continued on Page 3 K e l e i g h s K u r r e n t s Karian@kehilatshalom.org Hi, Everyone! I hope everyone is getting out and about and utilizing the warmer weather to be active and have fun. Before much longer the children will be out of school for the summer, so send us pictures of them playing ball, swimming, climbing, and going to camp. We would like to share those smiling photos with our synagogue family. A very hearty and warm mazel tov to Elise and Andrew Garfinkel on celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. The couple took a second honeymoon in Hawaii. I don t know about all of you, but I am envious and want to see pictures so that I may live vicariously. Andrew is also celebrating 20 plus years of employment at Marriott. Wow, Andrew, you have quite a bit to be thrilled about. Continued on Page 12 2 Shalom, and WOW! The 45 th Anniversary Gala and Concert was simply superb! Our own Aaron Wertlieb and his buddy John Trupp were an absolute delight. They offered a perfect mix of tunes, carefully selected to appeal to our diverse audience. It was an absolute pleasure to see John doing each in the style that made it famous, and Aaron in total control of his bass guitar. Two real musicians, and a truly stellar performance! We could not have hoped for more. And what can I say about Chazzan Kim Komrad? The moment was filled with drama and tension, as she courageously chose to perform her entire program despite having come down with a flu. As one might expect, Chazzan Kim at 95% was twice as good as most at 100%! She wailed! Her stage presence was beyond remarkable! Accompanied by the talented pianist Kery Hummel, she became part of every piece she sang, and brought us with her. It was a rare, indeed unique moment of internal agony and external ecstasy. Needless to say, she brought the house down! And then there was the reception. High Tea was the theme, with lots of finger food and the fanciest of desserts. To say nothing of the wine bar! Something good was happening, because everyone stayed and schmoozed without a concern for the clock. But, none of this would have been possible without the incredible, and incredibly successful efforts of the Concert Committee, under the chairmanship of Larry Beck. The marketing group led by Stu Rutchik raised needed funds with a campaign of ads and sponsorships. The Catering group, led by Wendy Schnieder-Levinson, turned out just the right type of nibbles. Wendy Beckerman produced a really firstrate professional program. Marcie Lerner and Tom Loggie shared their expertise, and we benefited from the invaluable assistance of Doug Baum, Linda Loggie, Charlotte Strauss, Gail Lieberman and Alan Levine. Lori Wasserman put in hours to make sure everything was just right. And, of at least equal importance, a small army of you wonderful people helped them in making it happen. And, all of this would have been for naught if you all didn t support the event with your presence, your volunteer efforts, as well your purse strings. We ended up with about 160 attendees, and net profits of about $7,000! A most sincere thank you to all who helped in this success - - it really was a Gala, and the best concert ever! (Continued on Page 4)

3 F r o m t h e R ab b i s S t u d y (Continued from Page 2) I want to focus instead on two other figures in the case. The sexual assault took place after the party behind a dumpster near a fraternity house, and while it was taking place two Swedish graduate students came by on their bicycles. They noticed what was happening and intervened. Turner took off, one of the Swedish students went after him, and the two of them pinned him down and held him until the police arrived. If the Swedish students had not intervened, the assault would have continued and Turner would probably never have been caught and tried. The philosopher Edmund Burke said that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men should do nothing. The Torah teaches us (Lev. 19:16) do not stand idly by while your neighbor s blood is shed. What is our responsibility when we see evil being done? Do we have the courage to be, as it were, Swedes on bikes? L'shalom, Rabbi Charles L. Arian Library corner High Holidays are quickly approaching Start thinking about how you would like to participate in the Kehilat Shalom High Holiday Services! Would you like to read Torah? 7 Membership Corner Wow!!! The 45 th Anniversary Event was fantastic! Our Kim Komrad, accompanied by Kery Hummel on the piano, were outrageously fabulous - it was a show stopper, the sanctuary was filled with her beautiful soprano voice. Kim charmed us with her rendition of some of our favorite songs. Songs that many of us grew up hearing at weddings, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, in theatres, movies, and on TV and radio. Aaron Wertlieb and John Trupp s rendition of Nowhere Man was absolutely wonderful, as was their total performance. The socializing with members and friends and tasty tea sandwiches and wonderful desserts following the music made for a great and memorable evening. Special thanks go to Larry Beck for his magnificent orchestration of the event and to the many volunteers and sponsors. We are looking forward to our 50 th. Pomegranate Hav-Around Bobbie s Dine Around has been so successful, so why not a successful new Havurah open to all and without any restrictions? To become a founding member or just join please contact Bobbie at or bobbieandmike@erols.com. Wouldn t that be fun! I welcome ideas and suggestions. Please join me and help me put it all together so we can start this Fall. Upcoming Events All about Bees with Aaron Wertlieb, our resident Beekeeper. We re hoping to make arrangements in June/July to learn All About Bees with Aaron and make a field trip to a local bee apiary with Aaron. We ll keep you posted via s as we get closer. There is no Shofar in July, so you ll have to put up with Bobbie s annoying reminders. Also coming this summer is the annual Kehilat Shalom Yard Sale. Mark your calendars for Sunday, August 7. And please plan to donate some items to the Kehilat Shalom table and take a tax deduction. Or, consider renting a table to sell your merchandise. Do you know of any prospective members? Kehilat Shalom is reaching out to former members and our friends who participate in our High Holiday services. If you are in touch with any former members or friends of Kehilat Shalom or any prospective members, please let them know that we welcome them all back as new members. Please invite them as our guests to a Friday night Shabbat dinner. If you do this, both you and the prospective new members dine for free! New members are always needed for Kehilat Shalom to grow and we can t do it without your help. Happy Summer, finally!!! See you next month Bob and Bobbie 7 Hazzan Kim Komrad's performance is included in the Cantors Assembly & United Synagogue's new recording "The Spirit of Simcha and Celebration." 12 See you soon, B'Shalom, Tom Auxiliaries Men s Club News Thomas.loggie@gmail.com Involving Jewish Men in Jewish Life Learning & Growing RELIGIOUS SCHOOL News Thank you to our teachers Elissa Balsley, Lindsey Jackson, Tammy Jaffe; to our substitute teachers Joe Lustig, Arielle Erenrich; and Rabbi Arian for leading our classes and havurah sessions this year. School Board Members: Rebecca Hoffman, Janet Ballonoff, Lauri Friedman, David Joseph, Wendy Schneider-Levinson, Pam Strausberg. SISTERHOOD BOOKCLUB: On Sunday, June 26, at 2:00 pm, we will meet at Marilyn Fliegler s home to discuss Finding Nouf by Zoe Ferraris. Please rsvp to Marilyn at SROOLIK@aol.com and Alyce at asross@mycaringcenter.com.. Fast-paced and utterly transporting, Finding Nouf is a riveting literary mystery and an unprecedented window into the lives of men and women in Saudi Arabia. A finely detailed literary mystery set in contemporary Saudi Arabia, Ferraris's debut centers on Nouf ash-shrawi, a 16-year-old girl who disappeared into the desert three days before her marriage and has been found dead, several weeks pregnant. Palestinian Nayir al-sharqi who lives in Jeddah and works occasionally for the rich Shrawi family, is asked by them to investigate Nouf's death discreetly. Nayir, a conservative Muslim and an outsider because of his nationality, his class and his large stature, is wary of traversing the wide gulf between Saudi men's and women's worlds, and is encouraged by his friend Othman, an adopted son of the Shrawis, to seek out the help of Katya Hijazi, Othman's fiancée. Katya has a Ph.D. and is employed in the women's section of the state medical examiner's office. As Nayir and Katya's investigation progresses, it becomes clear that at least one of the Shrawis has something to hide. Ferraris, who has lived in Saudi Arabia, gets deep inside Nayir's and Katya's very different perspectives, giving a fascinating glimpse into the workings and assumptions of Saudi society. As a mystery, it's fairly well-turned, but it's the characters and setting that sparkle. K e l e i g h s K u r r e n t s Continued from Page 2 Wendy Beckerman is being honored for her 30 years at American University. We are proud of you, Wendy, and wish you continued success. Mazel tov! 14 Life & Learning If you would like to help create any new event, please contact Janet Rutchik at lend your support. Kiddush Konversations led by Rabbi Arian will take place once each month on our Simcha Shabbat. After Kiddush, we sit together, learn, share ideas and thoughts featuring intriguing dialogue on topics ranging from intriguing dialogue Halacha, to Israel, to current events. Notices are always listed in the weekly announcements. Adult Education Bible Class Rabbi Arian s bi-weekly Bible class has spent the past three years looking at the weekly Haftarah, and our studies have added to our knowledge and appreciation of these readings which follow the Torah reading every Shabbat. Now we turn to a different type of study: the weekly Torah portion with Rashi s commentary. Rashi ( ) lived in Troyes, France and is considered the commentator par excellence in helping to explain the plain meaning of the text. His commentary is considered indispensable for students of all levels and his lead to over 300 supercommentaries, meaning commentaries on Rashi s commentary itself. We will look at some selected verses along with Rashi s commentary, and discover what question Rashi is trying to answer and what his understanding adds to our knowledge of the text.
