2 Rabbi Charles L. Arian F r o m t h e R ab b i s S t u d y Dear Friends: Shalom - Michael Goldman President@kehilatshalom.org P r e s i d e n t s M e s s a g e You have probably heard of Brock Turner, the 20-year-old Stanford University student, convicted on three counts of sexually assaulting a 23-year-old woman after a party, who received a sentence of six months when the maximum sentence could have been as much as 20 years. The judge gave Turner such a lenient sentence because he was concerned about the severe impact a longer sentence might have had on him. I m hesitant to comment on verdicts and sentences based on what I read online or see on television, because I ve come to learn that very often we get only part of the story. As both a rabbi and as a former public official (I was chairman of the Ethics Commission of the city of Norwich, CT), I ve had people reach conclusions about things I did or said, or didn t do or didn t say, on the basis of inaccurate or incomplete information. So while the sentence certainly seems absurdly lenient, I m hesitant to jump on the bandwagon calling for removal of the judge in the case. Perhaps there is more here than meets the eye. I want to focus instead on two other figures in the case. The sexual assault took place after the party behind a dumpster near a fraternity house, and while it was taking place two Swedish graduate students came by on their bicycles. They noticed what was happening and intervened. Turner took off, one of the Swedish students went after him, and the two of them pinned him down and held him until the police arrived. If the Swedish students had not intervened, the assault would have continued and Turner would probably never have been caught and tried. The philosopher Edmund Burke said that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men should do nothing. The Torah teaches us (Lev. 19:16) do not stand idly by while your neighbor s blood is shed. What is our responsibility when we see evil being done? Do we have the courage to be, as it were, Swedes on bikes? L'shalom, I recently sent out an focusing on the action items in my Kol Nidre presentation. In case you missed it, they were: 1. Volunteer. We are busy putting together new, exciting activities. Our goal is to add a vibrancy to Kehilat Shalom that will benefit us all. But, we need your help - a. Catering: It seems that all our ideas have a food element. Tell Tom if you can help. He ll add you to the list of volunteers, and you can pick what and when you ll help. b. Events: Get on our new Events Committee, and be a part of our new flurry of activity. c. Office: We really need some volunteer help in our office. Call Andie or Lori Wasserman if you can help even on a very part-time basis. d. Web site: The site needs updating, and upgrading. Call Laurie Friedman if you can focus on even one section. e. Men s Club: Tom is trying to make our Men s Club more reflective of our needs and wants. This takes ideas and a willingness to participate. Call Tom and let him count you in. 2. Donate: December is w hen many do their giving, to take advantage of related tax benefits. Take a minute, write a check to Kehilat Shalom. You ll feel good, and I promise it ll be put to good use. 3. Join our Long-Term Planning Committee: We need to figure out how to get rid of our deficit. This means we ll be taking a hard look at membership, income, costs, and choices we need to make. Your first choice - - join us in this effort! Our first meeting was January 5, at 8 PM. Next meeting to TBA. 4. Show us you care: Call and say you ll volunteer; send us a December Donation; if you were once a member, re-join; find a way to increase your support, so we know you care. To all, my best wishes for a Happy Chanukah and a wonderful 2017! Mike Goldman Rabbi Charles L. Arian 2

7 Membership Corner Events Committee Hope Your Hanukah Was Great! Happy New Year 2017 One Friday Shabbat a month the Events Committee has brought you Sangria from Mexico and Spain, Pumpkin Pies and pastries from the fields and farms of Maryland, and Latkes courtesy of recipes from our families from Eastern Europe and Russia, and Sufganiyot from Israel and New York. Save The Date! March 3, 2017 at 6:30pm Shabbat Across America Anywhere from 18 to 41 congregants and friends have supported each of these special evenings and services with their attendance, donations and friendship. These events have been produced by the creativity and hard work of Bobbie Goldman and Deb Finch with support from Nasrine Sabi, Lauri and Mark Friedman, Mike Goldman, John Finch and consultant support from Tom and Linda Loggie. Shabbat Across America was a lovely event last year! Kabbalat Shabbat and Maariv Services were followed by a Gourmet meal from the Kehilat Caterers. I m not making it up it was Gourmet! Let s hope I m not too late to book them for March 3rd dinner. Membership Committee is also in the process of contacting our Hazzan Kim Komrad and hopes to also book her for the event. Last year Kim created a special songbook and we had a super songfest. The Events Committee is working so very hard to create experiences that you will enjoy and that will continue to bring our congregation closer together in fun, and friendship. However, we cannot succeed without your support both by your attendance and with your financial support. In the very near future, we will be announcing new events and we continue to survey your interests. We know this is a very busy time of the year. For those of you who have been providing support, we thank you. For those of you who have not Joined us, we hope you will join us for future events. Special Request If anyone is willing to help Doug and I put together this event, please contact Bobbie at bobbieanandmike@erols.com or Of course, I m hoping that my friends in the Membership, Good & Welfare and Events Committees will pitch in and help. You know my address. Thanks, in advance The theme of January s Special Friday Night Shabbat Event was two-fold. It dealt with the parable of the story of Stone Soup and it also provided some humorous references (nonpartisan) to famous quotes from past presidents. The Stone Soup Story is a metaphor that deals with the need of folks to make their own special contributions to the village in which they live. The extension, for Kehilat, applies to us as a village or community with the same needs. If you have not read this, you can find it in the Announcements for January 18, It s time for an updated directory Beginning in the early spring we will be collecting For those of you who did not attend the Friday, January 27th Shabbat, the Events Committee shared these famous and information for our NEW directory. You will be requotes of past presidents. See if you can identify ceiving an inter-active information sheet via that humorous the presidents who made these. we ll need to have filled out and returned. This time we would like to include cell phone numbers in the Dee Jolles Directory (of course, you can opt out of them being Events Committee included in the directory but KS would like them on record at the Shul) and your most up to date addresses. So, look for our and please help us out by returning them asap. Thanks! Once again we re having our New Member Special, so if you know anyone who would like to join us, just give Bobbie a call or and she will do the rest or bobbieandmike@erols.com. See you at Kehilat Shalom See you next month Bobbie and Doug Hazzan Kim Komrad's performance is included in the Cantors Assembly & United Synagogue's new recording "The Spirit of Simcha and Celebration." Please rsvp to Marilyn at sroolik@aol.com and Alyce at asross@mycaringcenter.com. *Starred Review* At 59, Ove is a grumble Gus of the first degree. Rules are made to be followed, signs are meant to be obeyed, and don t even get him started about computers and mobile phones. In truth, Ove has been this way his whole life, but he s gotten worse in the last four years since his wife, Sonia, died, taking with her all the color in a world Ove sees as black-and-white. Ove has decided life without Sonia is not worth living and plans to join her in the next world. But a young couple and their two children (a third is on the way) move in next door, his oldest friend and most feared enemy is about to be forcibly removed to a nursing home, and a street-scarred cat insinuates itself into his life. Suddenly, Ove s suicide plans get delayed as he helps solve neighborly crises large and small. Though Ove s dark mission mitigates any treacly upstaging by animals and small children, readers seeking feel-good tales with a message will rave about the rantings of this solitary old man with a singular outlook. If there was an award for Most Charming Book of the Year, this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turnedovernight-sensation would win hands down. --Carol Haggas society. As a mystery, it's fairly well-turned, but it's the characters and setting that sparkle. 12

13 Life & Learning If you would like to help create any new event, please contact Janet Rutchik at lend your support. Kiddush Konversations led by Rabbi Arian will take place once each month on our Simcha Shabbat. After Kiddush, we sit together, learn, share ideas and thoughts featuring intriguing dialogue on topics ranging from intriguing dialogue Halacha, to Israel, to current events. Notices are always listed in the weekly announcements. Adult Education Bible Class Rabbi Arian s bi-weekly Bible class has spent the past three years looking at the weekly Haftarah, and our studies have added to our knowledge and appreciation of these readings which follow the Torah reading every Shabbat. Now we turn to a different type of study: the weekly Torah portion with Rashi s commentary. Rashi ( ) lived in Troyes, France and is considered the commentator par excellence in helping to explain the plain meaning of the text. His commentary is considered indispensable for students of all levels and his lead to over 300 supercommentaries, meaning commentaries on Rashi s commentary itself. We will look at some selected verses along with Rashi s commentary, and discover what question Rashi is trying to answer and what his understanding adds to our knowledge of the text. The class will meet the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each calendar month right after evening minyan. 13
