1 THE CHALICE UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST FELLOWSHIP OF THE RAPPAHANNOCK (UUFR VA) P.O. Box 1266 White Stone, VA March 2016 Fellowship Services Fellowship services are held each Sunday at 10:30 A.M. at 366 James Wharf Road, White Stone, VA. Meditation is held each Sunday from 9:30 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. in the sanctuary. All are welcome. Coffee and conversation follow the service. Sunday Programs March 6 Lois Williams: Christian and UU Views on Death Lois grew up attending a Union Sunday School and singing in the Interchurch Junior Choir of children from three churches. It was a non-denominational upbringing, and thus she has always been curious about peoples religious beliefs. Ten years ago she wrote Religion at the Isles of Shoals, and a year ago she spoke at UUFR-VA on Unitarian Beginnings in America. In November 2013, Lois and Peter Williams moved to the RW-C continuing care community (and UUFR-VA!) from Potomac, MD. Peter died two years later. UU Kids: Science, Faith, the UU Kids, and the Universe March 13 Christina Hockman: The Climate Crisis Who Has the Most to Lose? Even after recognizing the realities of climate change, it is still difficult to fathom all of its implications. How can we understand the impact on our most vulnerable and respond effectively? A seminarian at Meadville Lombard Theological School, Christina Hockman plans to graduate this spring and pursue a career in Unitarian Universalist parish ministry. Originally from Reading, PA, she has spent the last 20 years living in beautiful Richmond, VA. She holds a BA from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL, and an MBA from Penn State University. Before seminary, she worked for 13 years in nonprofit fundraising for a children s home and the Science Museum of Virginia. She is presently the intern minister at the UU Fellowship of the Peninsula in Newport News, VA. When she s not studying or interning, Chris may be found adventuring with her two rescue dogs, Enzo and Violet, on a yoga mat, or waiting patiently for spring. March 20 Dave Dustin: The Meaning of Life Many of us, from time to time, think about the meaning of life. The meaning of life can either be considered from the viewpoint of the entirety of humanity or from a personal point of view. Dave will explore both viewpoints from religious and humanist perspectives. He ll also talk about how the 1

2 meaning of life changes if you are rich or poor, in good health or bad, and how it might change as you grow older. Dave Dustin holds a BS degree in Computer Science from Maryland University and retired from Johns Hopkins University/Applied Physics Laboratory in 2012 after 38 years of service. During the years of , he worked as a cyber-security consultant to the Federal Aviation Administration. He is currently serving on the UUFR-VA Board of Stewards as Past President and as a Vice President for the Kids First Foundation. He also volunteers at the White Stone Baptist Church s Food Pantry. The UU Kids Create a Vegetable Garden.Memorial Service Our member, Cliff Hemming, died on February 17 after a long illness. All are invited to a memorial service at UUFR-VA celebrating Cliff s life, and showing our love for his wife Janet, on Saturday, March 19 th, at 2:00 P.M. A reception at the fellowship will follow the service. Guided Meditation Guided Meditation led by Thea Marshall will begin Wednesday, March 9 th, at 6:30 P.M. We will meet at Thea s home. Come join in meditation and a glass of wine. March 27 Rev. Jennifer Ryu: Make All Things New The Wheel of the Year has brought us once more to a time of renewal that some call Ostara or Passover or Easter. It is a celebration of rebirth as the earth rouses from its winter slumber. It is also a reminder that the cold dark nights give way to sunlit days, and hope rises above despair. Rev. Jennifer Ryu recently concluded a nineyear ministry with the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists (WUU). Born in South Korea, she grew up in Ohio, then moved to Baltimore where she discovered Unitarian Universalism. Jennifer is taking this year off while she travels, plays, and listens for the call to her next ministry. She serves our faith as Vice President of the UU Minister's Association. 2

3 An Opportunity to Deepen Your UU Experience by Bob Weekley Nominations are open until March 28 th to apply for the Southern Unitarian Universalist Leadership Experience (SUULE) at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, July UUFR-VA may nominate a team of two or more to attend this fullimmersion, five-day UU experience. Each day explores the UU core values and spiritual practices in small group meetings with indepth focus on leadership. Previously, UUFR-VA has sponsored two people for leadership training. UUFR-VA has set aside funds to assist with scholarships for interested individuals because the future success of our fellowship will depend on people who are prepared to assume leadership roles. More information is available at: If interested, contact a member of the UUFR-VA Leadership Development Committee as soon as possible: Dave Dustin, Janet Hemming, or Bob Weekley. Note the deadline for application March 28 th.
