Journal Committee Welcome to our 86 th Annual Journal Celebration. This event is the culmination of a year of planning and hard work by many individuals. It gives us great pleasure to honor Ilene Karpas this year. In the few years she has been a member, she has worn many hats at Madison Jewish Center including sitting on the Administrative Board of MJC, serving as Vice President of both Social Club and Sisterhood, membership on the Ritual Committee, serving as one of our gabbaim on Shabbat as well as holidays, and sitting on a number of other committees including the Journal Committee and the Message editing committee. We are also pleased to honor our very special retiring office manager, Sheila Goodman. Sheila is a long time MJC member, a member of our Administrative Board, was part of the Sisterhood Presidium, and has been an integral member of a number of committees. Sheila will be sorely missed in our Madison Jewish Center office, but thankfully, she will remain a member of our MJC family. Special thanks to our dedicated Journal Committee, our office staff and MJC s members and friends. And thank you to Paul Podell for all the extra time he always puts into Journal to help make it the success it is. 4 President s Message Congratulations and thank you to our Journal committee for putting together another outstanding Journal. The Journal is our synagogue s largest annual fundraiser. I would also like to thank our attendees and advertisers. You have all contributed the funds which we so desperately need. We are all here to honor two special women who have been invaluable to Madison Jewish Center. Sheila Goodman retired this year after working in the office for 33 years and has been the public face of Madison all this time. In addition, she and her husband Bert have been a steady presence in shul almost every Shabbat. We wish her well in her retirement. She can now spend more time traveling and attending to her Avon customers. Thank you Sheila. Ilene Karpas joined MJC about 5 years ago and became an active, dedicated member immediately. She is a regular at our morning minyanim, one of our regular gabbaim, Sisterhood vice-president, Social Club vice-president, writes the Social Club Message articles, is on the ritual committee, the Journal committee and the administrative board. It is hard to imagine a better choice for MJC Woman of the Year. Roy Alexander President 4

Rabbi Shae J. Kane D.D. Every year the Journal Committee selects deserving individuals to be honored at our Journal Celebration. Reading the list of past honorees is like looking at a list of Who s Who at Madison Jewish Center. Not only that, but it is also a reflection of Madison Jewish Center s commitment to Conservative Judaism, to the growing importance of the Egalitarian Movement and to international movement of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. This year, as a reaffirmation of Madison Jewish Center s solidarity with Egalitarian Judaism, Madison has chosen to honor two worthy and noble women Sheila Goodman and Ilene Karpas as honorees at our Journal Celebration of 5777/2017. Sheila Goodman has worked in our Synagogue office, first in the capacity of bookkeeper and then as office manager, for over thirty years. Her commitment to Madison then expanded to include serving as part of Triumvirate Presidium of Madison Jewish Center s Sisterhood. As part of that commitment to Madison and Egalitarian Judaism, Sheila was part of the first group of adult women who celebrated their B not Mitzvah here at Madison. Additionally, she has served on our Congregational Advisory Board for many years. I share a personal connection to Sheila. When I first came here to Madison, we discovered that we attended the same Elementary School here in Brooklyn. We were able to reminisce about the same teachers we knew and had and about all the memories we both experienced growing up in our Brooklyn neighborhoods. It was my joy and pleasure to officiate at Sheila s wedding to Bert in The sentiments I expressed in my remarks then still hold true today: As a Rabbi, it is always gratifying for me to share in the Simhah of family and friends and today is no exception. And so, before everyone extends an official Mazal Tov to you after you break the glass in a few moments, I want to be the first, as you stand under the Huppah, to wish you an affectionate Mazal Tov and may you have many happy and healthy years together. Ilene Karpas felt an inner desire and compunction to join Madison some years ago. She wanted to avail herself of the opportunities that could be afforded to her in our Egalitarian surroundings. She showed the courage to step out of her previous comfort zone and grasp hold of the new Jewish horizon that was ahead of her. She did this with unabashed enthusiasm. After receiving her first Aliyah, she asked me where she could purchase her own Tallit, which she now proudly wears at our morning Minyan and on Shabbat and Festival Services. She has become active in many aspects of our Congregation. Some, but not all, of her responsibilities include coordinator of our annual Social Club Shabbat and its programming and acting as a Gabbai of our Ritual Committee during the Torah Service. I am officially exercising my authority as Mara D atra* of Madison, to henceforth designate a new feminine form of Gabbai in honor of Ilene Karpas. She, and all who follow in her footsteps shall be officially designated as a Gabbaiah. And I would like the officers who do the announcements after our Services to reflect this new designation. Sheila and Ilene have continued in the high standards that have been set by all our previous honorees. May their inspiration endure and continue to motivate all of us and others to follow in their devoted footsteps. * Applying the prerogatives of the position as Rabbi to the Standards of Rabbinic Practice of the Rabbinical Assembly. 6
Cantor Leslie Rimer I am delighted that Madison Jewish Center has decided to honor two most deserving honorees at this year's Annual Journal Celebration, Sheila Goodman and Ilene Karpas. It has been my privilege to know Sheila for more than three decades. We have shared many life cycle events together. It was my pleasure when she joined our MJC group trip several years ago to Rome and Eretz Yisrael. She has been the office manager and bookkeeper at MJC for many years. Her tireless efforts and dedication on behalf of the congregation are admirable. Sheila is active in Sisterhood and serves on the Congregational Advisory Board as well as in many community organizations. Ilene has been a devoted member of our congregation since she joined our shul. She has become an integral part of every activity at MJC. Ilene is an officer of sisterhood, social club and serves on several committees. She attends the morning minyanim regularly and is a gabbai on Saturdays. Ilene is active in the community at large, a member of Hadassah, a book club and in other organizations. Her knowledge of Judaism in general and Hebrew in particular is remarkable. May we all enjoy the blessing of having these two outstanding ladies with us for many many years. 7
Sisterhood Message On behalf of Sisterhood we congratulate two outstanding women being honored at this year s Journal dinner Ilene Karpas as Woman of the Year and Sheila Goodman on her retirement from MJC. Sheila has worked as the office manager at Madison for 34 years and we will truly miss seeing her on a regular basis. We will always remember Sheila as the person to go to when you need something done such as assistance planning an event, registering for Hebrew school or synagogue membership, sending out cards and notices, or just about any question concerning management and administrative activities. In addition, she has been an active member of this congregation and served as Co-President and then VP of Fundraising for Sisterhood for which she successfully organized many programs generating significant revenue. Sheila assisted Sisterhood on virtually any event we organized. She is someone we could always count on for help and we want to express our appreciation for all her efforts and support. We wish her many years of good health and happiness on her retirement. Ilene Karpas is being honored as Woman of the Year. Since joining Madison Jewish Center she has become actively involved with various committees and the Sisterhood board serving as Programming VP. Ilene developed and organized the Sisterhood Shabbat service that has been an ongoing annual event and definitely an outstanding accomplishment. She is always willing to help with programs and support our efforts whenever and wherever she is needed. Ilene has become an integral part of both MJC as a whole and certainly Sisterhood. We also want to express our appreciation to her for her support and commitment to MJC and Sisterhood. She truly deserves this honor! Mazel tov! Harriett Cohen and Shelli Feldman Sisterhood Co-Presidents 8
Social Club Message It is with great pleasure that I write this article for the 2017 Madison Jewish Center Journal. To start with I commend the Journal committee for their efforts in putting together another superb journal. It is my pleasure to write a few words about this year's honorees. I have known Ilene Karpas for many years. I worked with her at Erasmus Hall HS as a fellow teacher, as her assistant principal and as her principal. She was a devoted teacher, always caring for her students and giving her best at all times. Now she does the same for MJC, caring and always giving her best. Sheila Goodman has been at MJC over 30 years. A more dedicated office worker and manager you cannot find. Because of her dedication, as president of MJC, I promoted her to the office manager position. She is efficient, dedicated, and always a pleasure for anyone calling Madison or stopping by the office to speak with. Two more deserving recipients you cannot find. From me personally, the other officers and members of the Social Club, we wish them a healthy and happy future and appreciate their dedication. May it continue for the next 100 years. Norman Green Social Club President 9
Parents Association Message A Mazal Tov to this year s deserving honorees, Sheila Goodman and Ilene Karpas. You are both models of incredible dedication and service to our synagogue. Congratulations on your retirement Sheila. The P. A. wanted to let you know what a blessing it was to have you working in the office for all these years, and how much you are already missed. You were a valuable asset to our synagogue and an enjoyable presence in the office as well. While you are missed by all of us at Madison Jewish Center, you certainly deserve your retirement. Ilene, congratulations on being one of this year s honorees. On behalf of the P.A. we just wanted to let you know that the amount of effort you put into Madison Jewish Center does not go unnoticed. Your abilities and contributions are an important key to the success of Madison Jewish Center. Take a moment to reflect upon all of your accomplishments here at Madison Jewish Center and take pride in knowing that you are an important member of our team. You both have been incredible assets to our synagogue over the years and we appreciate everything you both have done for Madison. Melanie and Steven on behalf of the P.A. of Madison Jewish Center 10
Madison Jewish Center Woman of the Year Ilene Karpas was born and raised in Brooklyn. She grew up in East Flatbush and eventually moved to Canarsie where she still resides. Ilene graduated from Tilden High School and Brooklyn College. She taught mathematics at Erasmus Hall High School and eventually became a guidance counselor, spending the last six years of her education career at James Madison High School. Ilene has an excellent background in Hebrew and has volunteered to teach adult Hebrew classes. Ilene was attracted to Madison Jewish Center because of its Egalitarian services and a large group of welcoming friends. After joining Madison, Ilene instantly became an integral part of everything. She is an officer of both Sisterhood and Social Club and is a working member of the Message, Journal and Ritual Committees. She is part of the morning minyan, serves as gabbai on Saturday and is a member of the administrative board. Ilene still has difficulty saying no. In addition to her activities at Madison, Ilene is a member of Hadassah, the Mill Island Retirees, and a book club. She takes classes at the UFT and Brooklyn College, travels extensively, and is both an avid theater goer and photographer. Madison Jewish Center is certainly a richer place because of Ilene Karpas - a true Renaissance woman. 11
Sheila Goodman in honor of her retirement Sheila Weissman-Goodman was born and raised in Brooklyn and attended both Kingsboro Community College and Brooklyn College. She began her career in 1952 as an assistant bookkeeper for a brokerage firm and later worked as an assistant cashier for a NYSE firm. She began working for Madison Jewish Center in 1983 as a part time bookkeeper and subsequently became an MJC member. Sheila eventually became office manager and bookkeeper. She was active in the Sisterhood, serving as part of its presidium from In addition, Sheila serves on the Board of Directors of Madison Jewish Center. In addition to her efforts for Madison Jewish Center, Sheila is an active member of Women s ORT and the Sylvia Martin chapter of Deborah Hospital, as well as an Avon representative. Sheila s retirement from the MJC office will give her more time for her other interests. We hope to see more of Sheila in her Sisterhood and MJC Board roles now that she is free during the days! 12

In honor of my loving wife Sheila As she celebrates her retirement, after 33 years of service to Madison Jewish Center. She started part-time and eventually became full-time, taking over every aspect of running the office. She then became involved in Sisterhood, as a member of their presidium. We met at Madison as a result of offering condolences, over the phone, when I lost my late wife. Sheila is wonderful when talking to people, always showing concern. Eventually we were married at Madison. Shortly after our marriage, she went back to part-time. Her involvement is ongoing as she considers Madison her home away from home. Our love is still going strong and I am very proud of all her accomplishments. Bert Ms. Ilene Karpas was one of my co-workers at Erasmus Hall High School during the 1980 s. She demonstrated strong character as a Guidance Counselor. Ilene put her students first. In spite of such a large student population she took time to offer her personal concern for any student she sensed was in need. Her strong work ethic made a difference in achieving much on behalf of her students. Many students benefited from Ilene s encouragement, and were able to attend college following high school graduation. It is my pleasure sharing in this celebration to honor Ilene Karpas. Ilene extended her friendship to me many years ago, and I have never forgotten her kindness and willingness to help me when I became a Guidance Counselor at Erasmus Hall High School Cora Green, Columbus, Ohio 46

I want to congratulate Sheila Goodman on her retirement. I have worked with Sheila for the past thirty four years and have watched her develop from just a bookkeeper to becoming the driving force of Madison s office. She knows every aspect of the daily workings of Madison, can tell you about every member, and even knows where the bodies are buried. Although she will not physically be in the office, she is but a phone call away from continuing to give us her expertise. Through her efforts, many non members soon became members. Sheila, we ve had our ups and downs but knowing and working with you these past thirty four years has really enhanced my life. To my good friend Ilene Karpas Paul You truly deserve to be Madison s Woman of the Year. I have known you for fifteen years. You are an integral part of every aspect of Madison s life and are always ready to help with everything and anyone. Every organization and committee you belong to is enhanced by your involvement.
