2 Page Two Madison Jewish Center Page Fifteen Rabbi s Message Article M A Y By Rabbi Shae J. Kane, D.D. This year we celebrate the Holiday of Shavuot in the month of May. The first thing that one notices with regard to Shavuot in the Torah is the absence of an exclusive name for the holiday. Shavuot has several designations in the Bible. The Book of Exodus 23:16 designates it as Hag HaKatzir the Festival of the Harvest which identifies the holiday time frame as late spring-early summer. The Book of Numbers 28:26 designates it as Hag HaBikkurim -- the Festival of the First Fruits, which specified the time on which the custom was to offer first fruits of the season. Shavuot combines two major religious traditions. First is the grain and first fruits harvest of the early summer. Second is the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai seven weeks after the exodus from Egypt. The first determines the ritual for the holiday, which was one of the three pilgrimage festivals of ancient Israel, when the Israelites were commanded to appear before God in Jerusalem, bringing offerings of the first fruits of their harvest. The second determines the significance of the holiday for Judaism, tying it in with the seminal event of Jewish religious memory, namely the entering into a covenant between God and Israel, exemplified by Israel s obligation to observe Divine law. It is customary to eat dairy meals during Shavuot. Some derive this practice directly from scripture, saying we eat dairy to symbolize the land flowing with milk and honey (Exodus 3:8) promised to the Israelites, or that milk and honey are under your tongue (Song of Songs 4:11). These passages, along with The precepts of the Lord are sweeter than honey (Psalm 19:9-11) also indicate we should eat honey, which is customary in some communities. There is also support for this custom based on the spiritual development among the Israelites in the wake of Sinai. After the Torah was given, they were obligated to follow its laws, including those governing dietary SUN MON TUES WED THURS FRI SAT iyar 15 iyar Flea Market 10AM - 4PM iyar 22 iyar 23 iyar 24 iyar 25 iyar 26 iyar 27 iyar Services 7:30PM Social Club OFFICERS Congregation Shabbat 9:00AM Birthday/Anniv. As they returned to the camp from Revelation, they could not eat the previously prepared meat, which had not been done according to the laws of kashrut [dietary restrictions]. Since butchering and cooking fresh meat would take too long for the tired, hungry Israelites, they took the dairy food that was readily available. Symbolizing modesty, dairy food was also seen as appropriate for the occasion of receiving the Torah, which should always be approached with humility. Along with blintzes and burekas, cheesecake is a widely popular Shavuot gastronomic delight. Some eat kreplach, three-cornered dumplings that can be filled with cheese. They are supposed to remind us of the Torah, which is the first of the three sections of the Bible (Torah, N vi im, and K tuvim / Torah, Prophets, and Writings), it also reminds us that: there are three categories of The Children of Israel (Kohanim, L viim, and Yisraelim); Moses was the third child of Amram and Yocheved (Aaron and Miriam are the two older siblings); there were three days of preparation before Matan Torah the giving of the Torah (Exodus 19:11) and that it took place on the third month of the year (Exodus 19:1). Those of a kabbalistic [mystical] bent equate the numerical value of the word halav (dairy), 40 ( het =8, lamed =30, vet =2), with the number of days Moses spent on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments and other teachings (Exodus 24:18). Others look to the mountain itself, which is termed in Psalms mount of gavnunim (68:15), meaning many peaks. They connect that description with the Hebrew word g vinah, meaning cheese.

The year has flown by with all the fun activities and great performances by our Hebrew school staff and children. First, I just want to say that the Hebrew School Model Seder conducted by Rabbi and Mrs. Kane was lovely. The Rabbi, Mrs. Kane, and the children all did a great job and the parents who attended had a great time. We look forward to more of these events in the future and thank the parents who came and supported. We really appreciate it, it was a great turnout. We hope to have as great a turnout at our May 3rd Flea Market. Next, I want to congratulate our two Hebrew School graduates and their families: Aidan Cohen and the Cohen family and Morgan Hesse and the Hesse family. Remember, the Hebrew School graduation/moving up ceremony is on Friday, May 29th at 7pm. Attendance is mandatory for all students. Finally, I just want to say thank you to all of you who have supported the Hebrew School through our sales. A special thank you to Myra Lee and Albert Fleischman for the contribution to the Hebrew School for the model Seder food and supplies.
