Kane D.D. FOOD FOR SUMMER THOUGHT Summer officially starts on June 21 st. Dominating the Torah Reading cycle for the first half of the summer is Sefer B midbar The Book of Numbers and it begins with the counting of the numbers in the census. The Hebrew Bible is about a lot of things you could say it s about everything but one thing that it cares about a great deal is setting up the trusted network of what eventually comes to be known as the Jewish people. Genesis introduces the families, Exodus sees them enter their purpose as a nation, Leviticus lays out the core of cultic law, and Numbers brings all of these aspects into a cohesive Jewish perspective. It says, Take a census of the whole Israelite community by the clans of its ancestral houses (Numb. 1:2). What is one the first things we Jews do when meeting another Jew for the first time? We play Jewish geography. Where are you from? Do you know so and so? The Book of Numbers says, Look around us, take stock of our people. It is the source from which our Jewish psyche and all of our history is embedded. Trusted networks are the power of our age, too. We live in a world where harnessing the power of networks drives our knowledge and economy. Uber, Facebook, Google, YouTube you know the list these are all trusted networks

3 madisonjc.org Page Three leveraged both for profit and the greater good. As far as we think technology may have taken us and as new and unpredictable as our engagement with the world seems to have become, our essential infrastructure of communication in every interest, profession, or passion depends upon the same kind of relationships which describes the Jewish people in the beginning of the Book of Numbers. This trusted network of Torah and its descendants are the caretakers of Jewish law and it has opened for us a source for generations of debate and review. Every layer of intimate knowledge lives in this network: who is a Jew, what we eat, how we couple and uncouple, laws of property, how to take care of the poor, and on and on. As always, in numbers, it s all about how we utilize them for the greater good and just like our networks of today, it s also about knowing that what we know depends on how all of us login to our systems. Have a happy and relaxing summer! MJC SOCIAL CLUB HAPPENINGS JULY/AUGUST 2017 Congratulations to all the new officers and board members. Thank you to everyone for working so hard this past year. Your dedication, support, and participation helped make this a very successful year at MJC. The last event of the season was the annual barbecue and election. It took place on Sunday afternoon, June 4 th. It was a great way to end a wonderful year and honor Diane, Greg, and Judy. Everyone had a good time socializing with friends and family. Many interesting activities are already being discussed and planned for next year. Please let us know if you have any thoughts or ideas for future events. Every member of MJC is also a member of the Social Club. Please take advantage of the many opportunities to spend time with friends. Let s keep MJC as the center of Egalitarian Conservative Judaism in this part of Brooklyn. Check our website (madisonjc.org), watch for flyers, and check the Message for further information. Reservations for all activities can be made through our address (info@madisonjc.org). Have a wonderful, healthy, and relaxing summer.

4 Page Four Madison Jewish Center *** President s Message *** July/ August 2017 Summer is upon us, and it s finally time to enjoy the beautiful outdoors and longer days. This is my first article as the new President of Madison Jewish Center. I am humbled by this appointment, but excited about positive changes soon to come. I am also a bit nervous, as there is much to get done to improve our shul. Madison Jewish Center has just agreed to a long term business arrangement with an established caterer in our temple. With this arrangement comes significant monetary support for Madison Jewish Center, along with plans for some building improvements. Any work done by the caterer will be subject to subcommittee approval. I would like to thank this committee for facilitating this agreement quickly. As you know Madison really needs the funds to help with operating costs. Other changes we are working on are improvements to Madison Jewish Center s Shabbat Services. The goal is to build congregation attendance by offering educational and entertaining programs to inspire members of all ages. Upcoming flyers and advertisements will detail all of our plans monthly. Please Save the Date on your calendar to join us Friday September 8 th at 7:30 for our Installation of Officers and Board Members, with a decadent Wine and Chocolate Bar to follow. Also mark down Friday, September 15 th at 7:00 for our first Special Family Shabbat. This program will occur each month with music, movement and treats for the whole family. Please consider attending minyamin Mondays and Thursdays during the summer, if your schedule allows it. I can never attend during the school year, but I plan to do what I can now. I hope you will join me. It s a great way to start your day early, in a constructive way. Minyanim are at 6:45 AM on these days. You will be providing a comforting service to those who have Yahzreit. Thank you to all of the affiliates who made our many June events successful. A special note of appreciation to Roy Alexander and all the former officers for your guidance during my transition to President. Love, Barbara

6 Page Six Madison Jewish Center THE LATEST FROM SISTERHOOD JULY/AUGUST 2017 We had a wonderful end year dinner at Savor restaurant on June 6 th, and reminisced about all that we accomplished in the past year. This year s honorees at the end year dinner were Sheila Goodman and Marlene Podell, two outstanding women chosen for their dedication and hard work on behalf of Sisterhood. They have truly supported Sisterhood this year and in the past and we want them to know that their efforts are appreciated. Thank you Marlene and Teresa for organizing this wonderful dinner and evening. Sisterhood s June board meeting was followed by a post Fashion Show celebration. This year s Fashion Show was very successful and took an entire team working together to accomplish this very large and ambitious program. A lot of hard work went into making that event a success. So, a celebration night was the grand finale for the year. Todah Rabah! Save the date for Thursday night, August 24 th when Sisterhood will be partnering with Hadassah Associates for a fun evening at the Brooklyn Cyclones. Flyers will be sent out, and advance reservations are a must. If you have any questions, please contact either Sheila or Judy. We hope to see many of you that evening. Sisterhood will be meeting this summer to plan for the forthcoming year. We will have a board meeting on Monday night July 17 th and Monday night, August 28 th. These are planning meetings, so please come with ideas and suggestions. The opening Sisterhood brunch is scheduled for Sunday, September 10 th. A flyer will be forwarded with information. We hope that everyone is enjoying the summer months and look forward to our exciting programs. We wish everyone a safe and wonderful summer! Our first P.A. Meeting will be on Wednesday August 30 th at 7 p.m. We thank you all for a very positive and productive year together. We wish you all a great summer!
