2 Page Two Rabbi s Message Article December 2015 By Rabbi Shae J. Kane D.D. The most obvious symbol of Hanukkah is the Menorah (more correctly the Hanukkiah) and it is referred to as the Festival of Light (Hag HaUrim). Yet Hanukkah is essentially a celebration of a military victory one that could not have been expected. After all, it was the small non-professional army of Jews led by the Maccabees against the mighty Greek Empire. Judah the Maccabee is so revered for his military prowess that a statue of him (they don t actually know what he looked like) is at West Point. His innovative guerilla warfare tactics vanquished his mighty enemy. Yet the Hanukkiah still stands out as the most obvious Hanukkah symbol. I think it has to do with our fascination with light. It is such a special and beautiful symbol and it lends itself to a myriad of interpretations. Light can supplant darkness and show us the right path. Light means education, culture and purposeful living. Our Sages remind us that the light of a lamp remains undimmed even if you use it to light dozens of wicks and flames. The lights continue to burn just as brightly and warmly as they did before they were used to kindle another flame. The Rabbis liken that to a Mitzvah. When we give of ourselves to others we are not diminished, we do not really lose anything. We give Tz dakah, visit the sick, comfort mourners, study Torah or help make a Minyan we not only aren t diminished we are actually strengthened. We feel stronger as a result of the Mitzvah we did. Think about it. We may be exhausted when we need to stop by a house to make a Shivah Minyan, but when we leave we are exhilarated that we made the effort. There was a great debate in the Talmud about how we should light the Hanukkiah. The Academy of Shammai taught that we should start with 8 and then diminish the light by one each night. The Academy of Hillel taught that we begin with one light for the first night and we increase each night by one until all 8 burn on the final night. Hillel s argument obviously won out. Why? Because it is psychologically damaging to see things as diminishing rather than expanding and growing. Shammai may have been more historically correct in that the amount of oil must have diminished with each passing day. But Hillel was psychologically correct in suggesting that it is uplifting for us to attempt to make the world brighter and better with each passing day. The Maccabees fought for the day when they would enter the Temple and liberate it from the heathens who had defiled it. We kindle the Hanukkiah adding a light each night to remind ourselves that the day will arrive when the light of freedom and peace will burn brightly for us and our kin in Eretz Yisrael and throughout the world.
3 madisonjc.org Page Three DECEMBER 2015 It is hard to believe that fall is soon going to turn to winter. It certainly has been a spectacular fall, weather wise. As the leaves change color and fall to the ground, our thoughts turn to Hanukkah. We will be celebrating the holiday in several ways. On Saturday evening, December 5, we hold our Vodka and Latka dance. Last year s reviews were excellent. Join us and enjoy yourselves this time around, especially if you missed the last one. Then, on Sunday, December 6, we hold our annual community rooftop menorah (Hanukkiah) lighting ceremony in the triangle, complete with Hanukkah treats. Friday evening, December 11 at 6:15 PM is another of our delicious Shabbat dinners followed by Shabbat services. All of these events are described more completely in flyers and on our website. We appreciate the hard work everyone put in for our November events. We had a lively discussion on The Mapmaker s Daughter. Rabbi Kane completed his current series of study sessions and Cantor Rimer began his, giving us a taste of Talmud. His sessions continue December 2nd and 9th. Please join us for services every Friday evening and Saturday morning. We are continuing our Friday night Onegs and our Saturday Kiddush luncheons. They have been well attended and offer you an opportunity to spend some time with other Madison Jewish Center members. We continue to have trouble getting minyanim on Monday, Thursday and Sunday mornings. It would be most helpful if you could attend just one or two of these each month. If a few people make the effort it would go a long way to rounding out these services and it would be especially helpful if a member needs to say Kaddish. See you in shul,
4 Page Four THE LATEST FROM SISTERHOOD DECEMBER 2O15 Winter is approaching, but Sisterhood continues to have many activities planned. Thank you Marlene Podell for facilitating our annual Sisterhood book discussion. All who attended found the discussion of The Mapmaker s Daughter to be very interesting and enlightening. Vodka and Latka Night, our Hanukkah program, in conjunction with the Social Club was fun and entertaining. Thank you to all who participated and attended the Hanukkah event. Save the date for the Bingo Night sponsored by Social Club in conjunction with Sisterhood. The event will be held on Saturday, January 16, A flyer is forthcoming for our annual Movie Night to be held on Monday, January 18, There will be no meeting that night so all attending will get to see the movie starting at 7:00 P.M. The movie we will be seeing is Fill the Void. Refreshments will be served. Please join us at our upcoming events. Harriett Cohen and Shelli Feldman Sisterhood Co-Presidents
