2 Page Two Madison Jewish Center MESSAGE ARTICLE MAY 2017 Rabbi Shae J. Kane D.D. In case you missed it, here is the sermon I gave at the Kings Highway United Methodist Church on Sunday February 26, I stand before you today as a proud great grandson and grandson of immigrants to our beloved country. In the late 1800 s and early 1900 s, my ancestors fled unspeakable religious persecution in Eastern Europe and endured the hardships of transatlantic travel to arrive in this land of LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. Years after he emigrated to the United States of America from Russia, at the age of five, Irving Berlin wrote the song which has become our unofficial 2 nd national anthem: God Bless America. He wrote those words in appreciation for the unbelievable opportunities this country afforded him and many others. Some time ago, my wife and I visited Ellis Island, here in New York harbor, and we saw her grandfather s name inscribed on the wall erected there, a wall not to keep people out but, to honor those who came in. We were eyewitnesses to the barracks and the beds where millions of people were detained while their applications were processed by immigration officials. From 1880 until the year that America First isolationists began to restrict the flow of immigrants to our country in million Jews came into this country. If my ancestors had not been allowed into this country, most if not all of them would have been exterminated into dust and ashes in the concentration camp crematoria during WW II. And I would not be proudly standing before you today. When my ancestors came through Ellis Island, as did millions of other immigrants to our country, they passed by the Statue of Liberty. There is, engraved on a tablet in the pedestal of the Statue, a poem by Emma Lazarus, herself the daughter of immigrants from Germany in the early 1820 s, which states: Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door! These are the words that need to be repeated, over and over again, so that we,

3 madisonjc.org Page Three a nation built by the contribution immigrants have made to our country, should never forget the sentiments expressed by this poem. This week we celebrated Presidents Day honoring the birthdays of two of the greatest of our Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. President George Washington, who is rightfully honored by being called the Father of our Country, was well aware of the preamble to the Constitution, which states: We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. A few days after leaving Newport Rhode Island, President Washington wrote letters not tweets - thanking the citizen groups who had addressed him on that occasion, for their hospitality and graciousness and in appreciation for joining other states who ratified this newly drafted Constitution Among the groups to whom he wrote was the Jewish Congregation in Newport. He quoted from the Prophet Micah[4:4]: everyone shall sit in safety under his own vine and figtree, and there shall be none to make him afraid. And he went on to eloquently write: For happily the Government of the United States gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it on all occasions their effectual support. President Abraham Lincoln is rightfully called the Great Emancipator when he signed the executive order on January 1, 1863, known as the Emancipation Proclamation freeing about three million Black slaves. On November 19, 1863, President Lincoln gave his immortal speech known as the Gettysburg Address. Arlene and I visited the cemetery in Gettysburg, PA and stood a few feet away from the spot on which President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. It was an overwhelmingly powerful experience. As a youngster in school here in Brooklyn, we had to memorize the Address. It still rings resoundingly true as he praised those who gave their lives so that our country could survive: that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of selfless devotion--that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish

4 Page Four Madison Jewish Center from the earth." This month of February is Black History Month and we celebrate the contributions to our nation made by Black Americans. Those who came in chains and were sold on the auction block as slaves. And who, still, planted the seeds by sweat an' strain, Body all achin' an' racket wid pain (Ol Man River - music by Jerome Kern, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II from Show Boat in 1927) that would produce great men like the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King said in Washington D.C. in 1963 before hundreds of thousands of people that s not a fake number one hundred years after the Emancipation Proclamation he said that day: I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, Free at last, Free at last, Great God a-mighty, we are free at last. " The Book of Exodus [22:20] commands the Jewish People: You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the Land of Egypt. According to the Rabbis of the Talmud, the Torah demands of Jews, no fewer than 36 times, to treat those who are foreign born with fairness and compassion. No other commandment is repeated so often. The observance of the Holiday of Passover is emblazoned into the soul and psyche of the Jewish People. Through the Seder, the ritual and meal of Passover, we Jews are reminded of our people s 400 years of slavery in Egypt by eating Matzah the bread of affliction, and having salt water on our tables symbolic of the sweat and tears of slavery we vividly and sensually taste what our enslaved ancestors had to endure. And we extend a special invitation to all who are hungry to come and join us at our festive meal. We even diminish the joy of the celebration of our freedom from oppression by paying homage to those Egyptians who had to die in order that we could become a free people. And every Friday evening throughout the year before the Sabbath, Jews chant in the words of the Kiddush, a prayer in which we sanctify the holiness of the Day that the Sabbath is zikaron l ma asei b reisheet a reminder of the story of Creation but, also, ziecher litziat mitzraim a recollection of the Exodus from Egypt and that we were slaves in the Land of Egypt and the Lord our God freed

5 madisonjc.org Page Five us from the oppression of slavery. As a youngster, I was afraid that my mother would orphan me before I was prepared or ready for that eventuality. And even as an adult, I wanted my mother to live forever not realizing that time would take its toll on that young and strong woman I remember with such great love and affection. A week or so ago, I was transported back into that state of fear when I watched a Latino woman being arrested and torn away from her young children to be deported to Mexico. As long as I live, I will not forget the look of anguish in her eyes and face, and the eyes and faces of her children, as she was driven off behind bars to be deported. She had lived in this country for twenty years as an undocumented alien and was arrested for falsifying records so that she could obtain a driver s license. Why did she this? She did this so that she could find work to help support her children who were born here in the United States of America. What has our country come to? What would President Washington have said about this indecent and heinous act? What would President Lincoln have said about this indecent and heinous act? What would Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. have said about this indecent and heinous act? More importantly what are we NOW going to say about this indecent and heinous act and others surely to come by the current administration in Washington. I say that we should act in a holy manner. The Holiness Code of Chapter 19 in the Book of Leviticus commands us: do not stand idly by the blood of your fellow human being. We cannot stand idly by and remain silent as we watch the deterioration and elimination of the ideals and foundations of LIBERTY, FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY which has made our nation as President Harry Truman said: the greatest republic the world has ever seen. I, for one, will not go gently into that good night I will Rail! Rail! against the dying of our rights. 6 Page Six Madison Jewish Center President s Message May 2017 Shalom everyone. Shalom means hello and goodbye. My term as president of Madison Jewish Center is drawing to a close. Ambivalence would be the word to describe my feelings at this time. On the one hand I am looking forward to handing over the reins to my very capable successor, Barbara Stein. On the other hand I am leaving a position that has been a constant in my life for years. I must say it has been a rewarding and growth experience for me. I am extremely grateful to all the executive board members who have been here to help and guide me whenever I needed them. They were always available to assist and steer me and MJC in the right direction. I ve also always felt the support, encouragement and appreciation of the entire congregation. What matters most is the health and stability of the synagogue. I will always be proud to have my name listed alongside the MJC past-presidents. This month we can look forward to Social Club shabbat on Saturday, May 13th. We will all have an opportunity to participate in the service in some way. We hope you will all attend. The upcoming Fashion Show, Thursday, May 18th at 6:30 pm is a major fund raiser for us. If you haven t yet made reservations please do so. Also, this month, Ethan Bono becomes a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, May 6th. Mazal Tov to his family and friends. This past month we commemorated Yom HaShoah together with East Midwood Jewish Center at a very moving service. We also visited the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park City. Thank you to Sisterhood and Social Club for organizing that trip. It is not too late to make a reservation for our Journal celebration. Taking place on Sunday, June 11th, this year s Journal honors Sheila Goodman and Ilene Karpas. Get your ads in as soon as possible. This month s spotlight falls on Cantor Leslie Rimer. Cantor Rimer was born in Budapest, Hungary. His father was a well-to-do businessman who sold kitchen cabinets. Leslie comes from a cantorial family. Grandparents and uncles on both his mother s and father s side were cantors. At the age of five, he joined the choir of the largest Orthodox synagogue in Budapest. By the age of seven he was singing on Hungarian radio. In 1956, during the Hungarian revolution when Leslie was fifteen, his father decided to leave Hungary, as did most Jews. Things were chaotic and they were able to make their way to Austria by truck and finally sailed from Italy to Halifax, Canada. Shortly thereafter they made their way to the United States. Although Leslie s father was not in favor of Leslie becoming a cantor he graduated from the prestigious school of the Cantors Association and received a degree in music from the Hartford Conservatory. Cantor Rimer has sung throughout Europe as well as the U.S. and Israel. In 2005 Cantor Rimer was one of the lead members of a delegation of Cantors who went to Rome where they joined the largest group of world leaders in a meeting with Pope John Paul II. During this meeting he sang a blessing for the Pope and performed in a concert in Rome s largest synagogue with an audience of over one thousand. Cantor Rimer is a founding member of the well known singing group, The Three Cantors. Cantor Rimer was introduced by a friend to the former Kate Schwartz. She emigrated to Israel from the small town of Karcag, Hungary where her grandfather was the chief Rabbi. She served in the Israeli air force in a radar station from 1962 to 1964 at a time when the country was constantly being harassed by the Egyptian air force. Leslie and Kate were married in 1965 and have two daughters, Vivian and Ditah and two grandchildren. After living in Colchester, Connecticut for eleven years they decided that a larger town would offer their children better educational opportunities. Leslie was offered two jobs in New Jersey and one in Brooklyn. In 1974 Rabbi Joshua Lindenberg persuaded Leslie to come to Madison Jewish Center where he has been ever since. Shalom.

8 Page Eight Madison Jewish Center THE LATEST FROM SISTERHOOD MAY 2017 Last month Sisterhood and Social Club arranged for a trip to the Jewish Heritage Museum on Sunday, April 30 th. It included a guided tour of the museum with special tribute to those who perished in the Holocaust as well as exhibits describing Jewish culture. The tour was amazing. Thanks to Rachel and David for organizing and working so hard to make this program possible. Sisterhood has been working very hard to put together the annual Spring Fashion Show. This year s show will take place on Thursday night, May 18 th and is entitled, Luck Be A Lady Tonight. There will be exciting fashions from TJ Maxx, good music and food and it promises to be a wonderful evening. If you have not made a reservation, please contact Irene or Bonnie. All are welcome! The Tree of Life Growing at Madison Jewish Center, fundraiser is an on going project for this year. We sincerely appreciate the support received from our members for this project. The fundraiser will continue until the end of this calendar year. Anyone who has purchased a leaf will see the requested names in the monthly message and we hope to celebrate at the completion of the project. If you have any questions, please call either Judy ( ) or Babs ( ). Thank you. Last month we enjoyed playing Mahjong on Sunday morning March 26th. Please note that whenever the MJC Flea Market is held, there will always be Maj and Mingle going on as well. 9 madisonjc.org Page Nine MJC SOCIAL CLUB HAPPENINGS MAY 2017 I hope everyone enjoyed a happy and healthy Passover. On April 30th, the Social Club in conjunction with the Sisterhood met for a tour of the Museum of Jewish Heritage. The tour included the three floors of the permanent exhibit. Each floor is dedicated to a different time in Jewish history (before, during, and after the Holocaust). There was also time to explore the rest of the museum on your own. Everyone had a great time. The annual trip to Atlantic City is on Sunday, May 7th. The day starts with breakfast in the shul and then Bingo on the bus. The day continues with gambling at Caesars. For those who enjoy shopping, the outlets are a short walk away. The Social Club Shabbat is on Saturday, May 13th. Please try to attend and support the many Social Club members that will be participating in the service. A delicious Kiddish will follow the service. Sponsors are needed. The end of the year barbecue is on June 4th. This year the honorees are Diane and Greg Posniack. We will be using Facetime to talk with them. Every member of MJC is also a member of the Social Club. Please take advantage of the many opportunities to spend time with friends. Let s keep MJC as the center of Egalitarian Conservative Judaism in this part of Brooklyn. 10 Page Ten Madison Jewish Center Shalom Parents, My how this school year has gone by so fast. Last month we had the Tzivos Hashem matzah bakery come to our Hebrew School. This workshop was a lot of fun for all the students and adults who attended. This month we are proud to announce that Ethan Bono will be having his Bar Mitzvah. On behalf of the P.A. we would like to wish Ethan and his family Mazel Tov! We know he will do a great job. The last Junior Congregation of this school year will be Saturday, May 20 th. We commend all the students and their parents who have been coming to Junior Congregation on a regular basis. Also, mark your calendars; Friday evening, June 2 nd is our annual moving up/graduation ceremony. We hope to see you all there. We are still selling gift cards. Click on family signup and then click on create an account. 3. Next fill out all the necessary info and set up an account. 4. You will see join a nonprofit. Underneath will be a box marked enrollment code. Enter A3897D and then click on join. 5. Now you will be able to order your gift cards online through M.J.C. 6. All money for gift cards must be checks payable to M.J.C and sent to the office after you order your gift cards online. Please Label the envelope Attention Melanie or Steven Green. 7. For those of you who are not comfortable ordering online we also have a printed list of gift cards that are available and a printed order form. These also get sent to the office with a check payable to M.J.C and marked attention Melanie or Steven Green. No gifts cards will be sent to us unless we send them a check first.
