2 Page Two Madison Jewish Center MESSAGE ARTICLE JUNE 2017 Rabbi Shae J. Kane D.D. In case you missed it, here is the sermon I gave at the Kings Highway United Methodist Church on Sunday February 26, I stand before you today as a proud great grandson and grandson of immigrants to our beloved country. In the late 1800 s and early 1900 s, my ancestors fled unspeakable religious persecution in Eastern Europe and endured the hardships of transatlantic travel to arrive in this land of LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. Years after he emigrated to the United States of America from Russia, at the age of five, Irving Berlin wrote the song which has become our unofficial 2 nd national anthem: God Bless America. He wrote those words in appreciation for the unbelievable opportunities this country afforded him and many others. Some time ago, my wife and I visited Ellis Island, here in New York harbor, and we saw her grandfather s name inscribed on the wall erected there, a wall not to keep people out but, to honor those who came in. We were eyewitnesses to the barracks and the beds where millions of people were detained while their applications were processed by immigration officials. From 1880 until the year that America First isolationists began to restrict the flow of immigrants to our country in million Jews came into this country. If my ancestors had not been allowed into this country, most if not all of them would have been exterminated into dust and ashes in the concentration camp crematoria during WW II. And I would not be proudly standing before you today. When my ancestors came through Ellis Island, as did millions of other immigrants to our country, they passed by the Statue of Liberty. There is, engraved on a tablet in the pedestal of the Statue, a poem by Emma Lazarus, herself the daughter of immigrants from Germany in the early 1820 s, which states: Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

3 madisonjc.org Page Three These are the words that need to be repeated, over and over again, so that we, a nation built by the contribution immigrants have made to our country, should never forget the sentiments expressed by this poem. This week we celebrated Presidents Day honoring the birthdays of two of the greatest of our Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. President George Washington, who is rightfully honored by being called the Father of our Country, was well aware of the preamble to the Constitution, which states: We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. A few days after leaving Newport Rhode Island, President Washington wrote letters not tweets - thanking the citizen groups who had addressed him on that occasion, for their hospitality and graciousness and in appreciation for joining other states who ratified this newly drafted Constitution Among the groups to whom he wrote was the Jewish Congregation in Newport. He quoted from the Prophet Micah[4:4]: everyone shall sit in safety under his own vine and figtree, and there shall be none to make him afraid. And he went on to eloquently write: For happily the Government of the United States gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it on all occasions their effectual support. President Abraham Lincoln is rightfully called the Great Emancipator when he signed the executive order on January 1, 1863, known as the Emancipation Proclamation freeing about three million Black slaves. On November 19, 1863, President Lincoln gave his immortal speech known as the Gettysburg Address. Arlene and I visited the cemetery in Gettysburg, PA and stood a few feet away from the spot on which President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. It was an overwhelmingly powerful experience. As a youngster in school here in Brooklyn, we had to memorize the Address. It still rings resoundingly true as he praised those who gave their lives so that our country could survive: that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of selfless devotion--that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in

4 Page Four Madison Jewish Center vain, that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth." This month of February is Black History Month and we celebrate the contributions to our nation made by Black Americans. Those who came in chains and were sold on the auction block as slaves. And who, still, planted the seeds by sweat an' strain, Body all achin' an' racket wid pain (Ol Man River - music by Jerome Kern, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II from Show Boat in 1927) that would produce great men like the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King said in Washington D.C. in 1963 before hundreds of thousands of people that s not a fake number one hundred years after the Emancipation Proclamation he said that day: I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, Free at last, Free at last, Great God a-mighty, we are free at last. " The Book of Exodus [22:20] commands the Jewish People: You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the Land of Egypt. According to the Rabbis of the Talmud, the Torah demands of Jews, no fewer than 36 times, to treat those who are foreign born with fairness and compassion. No other commandment is repeated so often. The observance of the Holiday of Passover is emblazoned into the soul and psyche of the Jewish People. Through the Seder, the ritual and meal of Passover, we Jews are reminded of our people s 400 years of slavery in Egypt by eating Matzah the bread of affliction, and having salt water on our tables symbolic of the sweat and tears of slavery we vividly and sensually taste what our enslaved ancestors had to endure. And we extend a special invitation to all who are hungry to come and join us at our festive meal. We even diminish the joy of the celebration of our freedom from oppression by paying homage to those Egyptians who had to die in order that we could become a free people. And every Friday evening throughout the year before the Sabbath, Jews chant in the words of the Kiddush, a prayer in which we sanctify the holiness of the Day that the Sabbath is zikaron l ma asei b reisheet a reminder of the story of Creation but, also, ziecher litziat mitzraim a recollection of the Exodus from Egypt and that we were slaves in the Land of Egypt and the Lord our God freed

5 madisonjc.org Page Five us from the oppression of slavery. As a youngster, I was afraid that my mother would orphan me before I was prepared or ready for that eventuality. And even as an adult, I wanted my mother to live forever not realizing that time would take its toll on that young and strong woman I remember with such great love and affection. A week or so ago, I was transported back into that state of fear when I watched a Latino woman being arrested and torn away from her young children to be deported to Mexico. As long as I live, I will not forget the look of anguish in her eyes and face, and the eyes and faces of her children, as she was driven off behind bars to be deported. She had lived in this country for twenty years as an undocumented alien and was arrested for falsifying records so that she could obtain a driver s license. Why did she this? She did this so that she could find work to help support her children who were born here in the United States of America. What has our country come to? What would President Washington have said about this indecent and heinous act? What would President Lincoln have said about this indecent and heinous act? What would Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. have said about this indecent and heinous act? More importantly what are we NOW going to say about this indecent and heinous act and others surely to come by the current administration in Washington. I say that we should act in a holy manner. The Holiness Code of Chapter 19 in the Book of Leviticus commands us: do not stand idly by the blood of your fellow human being. We cannot stand idly by and remain silent as we watch the deterioration and elimination of the ideals and foundations of LIBERTY, FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY which has made our nation as President Harry Truman said: the greatest republic the world has ever seen. I, for one, will not go gently into that good night I will Rail! Rail! against the dying of our rights. 6 Page Six Madison Jewish Center President s Message June 2017 Greetings everyone. This is my final message to you, the congregation, as I come to the end of my term as president. I am looking forward to being just a member of the congregation. Thank you to everyone who has helped me and our synagogue in any way. This includes regular attendees, affiliate officers and members, office staff, custodial staff, executive board members, Rabbi Kane, Cantor Rimer and, most importantly, my wife, Irma. I purposely list regular attendees first because you are the lifeblood of Madison Jewish Center. My only wish right now is that more of you would join us for Shabbat and morning services. Barbara Stein will be taking over as president in July. She is perfect for the job. More about her later in this article. This past May began with a successful trip to Atlantic City. By that I mean that everyone had a fun, exciting time. I have no idea if anyone actually won any money. I m always skeptical of claims that they did. Then came the wonderful Social Club Shabbat. Thank you, Ilene Karpas and all who participated in any way. Finally, our annual Fashion Show was a huge success, as always, due to the extraordinary efforts of Barbara Stein and her committee who all pitched in to make this the wonderful event that it was. This month begins with our Hebrew School graduation/promotion on Friday evening, June 2nd at 7pm. Arlene Kane will once again be leading our youth chorus in song. If you haven t yet heard them you re in for a treat. Please come and show your support. Social Club s election barbecue is Sunday, June 4th at 3pm, honoring, this year, Judy, Diane and Greg Posniack. Diane and Greg, who have relocated to Arizona, will be appearing live via Face Time on our large screen. Remember, if you are a MJC member you are automatically a Social Club member, so please come. Our premium event, the Journal Brunch, will take place at Madison on Sunday, June 11th at 11am. This year s Journal honorees are Sheila Goodman, for her retirement after 34 years of service and Ilene Karpas, Woman of the Year, for her outstanding contributions to MJC. It is not too late to make a reservation. Last but not least is an important general membership meeting on Tuesday evening, June 13th at 8pm; we will vote for our officers, board members and both the Rabbi s and Cantor s contracts. Try to attend. The Spotlight this month falls on our next president, Barbara Stein. Barbara has been a member of MJC since her son Scott and daughter Allyson enrolled in Hebrew School when Rabbi Roff, of blessed memory, was our Rabbi. Barbara is still in touch with his wife, Barbara. Barbara Stein grew up in Bensonhurst and Sheepshead Bay and graduated from John Dewey High School. Early on, Barbara had an interest in teaching challenged children who didn t learn in ordinary ways. She earned a BS and MS in Education/Special Education from Brooklyn College. She has taught for over 35 years, teaching all levels of students ranging from pre-school through high school. She has taught aspiring teachers for The College of New Rochelle and is a guest speaker in Brooklyn College s School of Education, lecturing on Special Education topics. She currently runs an award winning Student Government Club in her school. Her club is one of many in New York City devoted to service both in the community and overseas. The children raise funds and participate in all sorts of community service projects. Barbara met her husband, Barry, in her high school days. At first she felt he was too quiet but she gave him another chance and they have been married now for 39 glorious years. Barry has worked for The Daily News as a Foreman in Circulation for his entire career. They have a son, Scott, who is a physician and a daughter, Allyson, who is an attorney. Scott

7 madisonjc.org Page Seven became a Bar Mitzvah at Madison and, later, Allyson became a Bat Mitzvah. Barbara and Barry have two grandsons who they adore. Barbara loves the beach and spends summers at Silver Gull Beach Club. She and Barry share a love of Puerto Rico enjoying its culture and environment. They have been there about 12 times. Barbara s parents were high school sweethearts, married young and were doting and supportive parents. Her father was in the army and the air force. He flew over Normandy and later participated in the liberation of some of the Nazi concentration camps. We are all familiar with the MJC Fashion Show which Barbara has been chairing for the past 10 years. It gets bigger every year with 200 attendees this year. It has become a significant fund raiser. Barbara is the perfect embodiment of the sentiment, if you need something done, ask a busy person. When asked, What are your passions? she replied, family, faith and doing my part to make the world a better place. She is set to become Madison Jewish Center s next president. We are indeed fortunate that she accepted the job. 8 Page Eight Madison Jewish Center MJC SOCIAL CLUB HAPPENINGS JUNE 2017 It is almost summer and the year is winding down. We are starting to plan activities for next year. Please let us know if you have any suggestions and would like to help. The annual trip to Atlantic City was on Sunday, May 7 th. The day began with breakfast in the shul and then Bingo on the bus. The day continued with gambling at Caesars. For those who enjoyed shopping, the outlets were a short walk away. Everyone had a great time. The Social Club Shabbat was on Saturday, May 13 th. It was nice to see so many members come to show their support for the Social Club. A delicious Kiddush followed the service. The end of the year barbecue is on June 4 th. The cost is only $15. This year the honorees are Judy Posniack and Diane and Greg Posniack. We will be using Facetime to talk with Diane and Greg. Every member of MJC is also a member of the Social Club. Please take advantage of the many opportunities to spend time with friends. Let s keep MJC as the center of Egalitarian Conservative Judaism in this part of Brooklyn. 9 madisonjc.org Page Nine THE LATEST FROM SISTERHOOD JUNE 2017 It is truly amazing that it is already June and the end of another term for us. The past year was a good one for Sisterhood. We had many events and a busy year. Please note that the Tree of Life Growing at Madison Jewish Center fundraiser is ongoing until the end of December Check the monthly Message to see the leaves donated and we thank our supporters. It is not too late to see your name(s) on a leaf. Remember, as the tree grows the synagogue will benefit, as it is springtime and so lush outside, let s make our tree grow! If you have any questions, please call either Judy ( ) or Babs ( ). Last month Sisterhood held their annual Fashion show with the theme, Luck Be A Lady Tonight. We were indeed very lucky that night as once again all our expectations were realized. However, it was not just luck but hard work, cooperation and teamwork that helped Sisterhood to be so successful. We thank Barbara Stein for chairing the program and overseeing the food, music and models. Irene Cimini and Bonnie Solomon with Teresa Gottesman and Babs Dobbs handled the set up gift baskets and many other aspects of the show. Many members were there to set up the tables and during the event volunteers helped at registration, ticket sales, food service, modeling and so many other aspects of the show. Many Sisterhood members donated personal items, monetary contributions as well as time, effort and talent! We were truly a TEAM! The proceeds from the Fashion Show support Madison Jewish Center and therefore, this program stimulates not only financial benefit but brings out the best of Sisterhood. So once again Todah Rabah thank you from the heart! Sisterhood will be having the annual end year dinner at Savor restaurant on Tuesday night June 6 th at 7 PM. The cost is $40.00 per person. Reservations are a must, and flyers have been sent out. This is always a pleasant evening and an opportunity to chat and relax with your fellow Sisterhood members and enjoy a delicious dairy dinner. The students have had a very busy and fun year at Hebrew school. They have put on so many wonderful performances this school year and they had so much fun at the Matzah workshop. We would like to thank the whole staff of the Hebrew school for making this a great and successful year! We also want to thank all of you who have supported our sales, donated to, sold at, or have come to our flea markets this year. We couldn t do it without you! Your support allows us to have these enjoyable workshops for our students and we thank you. For those of you who are not comfortable ordering online we also have a printed list of gift cards that are available and a printed order form. These also get sent to the office with a check payable to M.J.C and marked attention Melanie or Steven Green. No gifts cards will be sent to us unless we send them a check first.
