This is the eternal verity of divine Science. The true theory of the universe, including man, is not in 27 material history but in spiritual development :25 27 True theory of the universe 3 Isaiah 40:13, 14, 21, 25, Who hath directed the spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him? 14 With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding? 21 Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth? 25 To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth. How is God shepherding you to a more spiritual understanding of His universe today? 3 295:5 8 God creates and governs the universe, including man. 6 The universe is filled with spiritual ideas, which He evolves, and they are obedient to the Mind that makes them. Mortals unlike immortals 4 502:28 The universe reflects God. There is but one creator and one creation. This crea- 1 tion consists of the unfolding of spiritual ideas and their identities, which are embraced in the infinite Mind and 3 forever reflected. These ideas range from the infinitesimal to infinity, and the highest ideas are the sons and daughters of God :22 24 Spiritual causation is the one question to be considered, for more than all others spiritual causation relates to 24 human progress. The science and principles that I m learning studying astronomy hint at the spiritual government of the universe. We see glimpses of God s spiritual universe all around us. 3 2 4 Hebrews 11:3 6 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. 335:13, Nothing Things spiritual and eternal are substantial. Things material and temporal 15 are insubstantial. Notes 5 II Corinthians 4:18 we 18 we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. 6 II Corinthians 5:1 5 1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. 4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. SCIENCE and HEALTH 4 For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. II Corinthians 5:4 New International Version This quotation is from I Corinthians 2:9. 18 Nothing but Spirit, Soul, can evolve Life, for Spirit is more than all else. Soul and Spirit one 7 545:11 13 The notion 12 of a material universe is utterly opposed to the theory of man as evolved from Mind :22 The visible universe and material man are the poor counter- 24 feits of the invisible universe and spiritual man. Eternal things (verities) are God s thoughts as they exist in the spiritual realm of the real. Temporal things are the 27 thoughts of mortals and are the unreal, being the opposite of the real or the spiritual and eternal. True idea of man 9 553:29 4 You may say that mortals are formed before they 30 think or know aught of their origin, and you may also ask how belief can affect a result which precedes the development of that belief. It can 1 only be replied, that Christian Science reveals what eye hath not seen, even the cause of all that exists, for 3 the universe, inclusive of man, is as eternal as God, who is its divine immortal Principle. Being is immortal :13 16 God expresses in man the infinite idea forever developing itself, broadening and rising higher and higher from 15 a boundless basis. Mind manifests all that exists in the infinitude of Truth. Notes SCIENCE and HEALTH Don t be fooled by a counterfeit! God, Spirit, didn t create a material universe, even if it seems that way! 4 3 7 Isaiah 45:11, Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. 12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. 8 Luke 1:5, 11 14, 16, 18, 19, 24, 25, 57, 58 5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judæa, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. 18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. 19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. 24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, 25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men. 57 Now Elisabeth s full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. 58 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her. 9 Malachi 2:10 (to 2 nd?) 10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? :7 Love, the divine Principle, is the Father and Mother of the universe, including man :18 18 Spirit, God, gathers unformed thoughts into their proper channels, and unfolds these thoughts, Unfolding even as He opens the petals of a holy purpose of thoughts 21 in order that the purpose may appear :4 5 (to ;) ANGELS. God s thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; :10 14 Whatever reflects Mind, Life, Truth, and Love, is spiritually conceived and 12 brought forth; but the statement that man is conceived and evolved both spiritually and materially, or by both God and man, contradicts this eternal truth :5 In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beauti- 6 ful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry. His origin is not, like that of mortals, in brute instinct, nor Spiritual does he pass through material conditions prior origin 9 to reaching intelligence. Spirit is his primitive and ultimate source of being; God is his Father, and Life is the law of his being. What s the effect of recognizing everyone as the child of the one Father-Mother God? How does this perspective help bring harmony to your relationships? FOR THE ISRAELITES, priesthood was serious business. The tribe of Levi, named after Jacob s third son, was appointed by God to serve as priests (Exodus 28:1 4; Deuteronomy 21:5). Moses and his brother, Aaron, the first high priest, belonged to this tribe. Later on, King David divided the priestly families into twenty-four shifts, or courses. Each group took turns serving at the Temple, performing sacrifices and other official duties for one week twice each year. The eighth of these shifts was named for Abijah (Abia in Greek), who was a direct descendant of Aaron. 5 4 10 John 1: And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? 20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. 21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. 22 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? 23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. 11 Luke 7: And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? 20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? 21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. 22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. THE SANHEDRIN, or Jewish high council, sent this group of priests and Levites (men trained in religious laws and teachings) to conduct a sort of inquiry into whether John was the Messiah. Old Testament prophecies promised a redeemer, known as the Messiah or Christ, who would come to bring salvation. John s unusual birth, combined with his work preaching and baptizing, may have led the Jews to wonder if he was the long-awaited Messiah. 27:1 1 Jesus sent a message to John the Baptist, which was intended to prove beyond a question that the Christ had 3 come: Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, 6 to the poor the gospel is preached. In other words: Tell John what the demonstration of divine power is, and he will at once perceive that God is the power in 9 the Messianic work :31 Christ Jesus overruled the error which would impose penalties for transgressions of the physical laws of 1 health; he annulled supposed laws of matter, opposed to the harmonies of Spirit, lacking divine au- 3 thority and having only human approval for their sanction. Begin rightly :30 30 If God had instituted material laws to govern man, disobedience to which would have made man ill, Jesus would not have disregarded those laws by healing in 1 direct opposition to them and in defiance of all material conditions :2 5 The scientific fact that man and the universe 3 are evolved from Spirit, and so are spiritual, is as fixed in divine Science as is the proof that mortals gain the sense of health only as they lose the sense of sin and disease :16 19 In proportion as the belief disappears that life and intelligence are in or of matter, the immortal facts of 18 being are seen, and their only idea or intelligence is in God. Elias is the Greek form of Elijah, and Esaias is the Greek form of Isaiah. transgressions: violations annulled: did away with; made void; reduced to nothing sanction: official authorization or confirmation instituted: set in operation; established fixed: settled; established; firm; unalterable What is it about Christ Jesus s demonstrations that inspires healing by anyone at any time? 6 5 12 Mark 6: And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. 35 And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: 36 Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat. 37 He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? 38 He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes. 39 And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. 40 And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. 41 And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. 42 And they did all eat, and were filled. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. 44 And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men. TWO HUNDRED pennyworth was no joke! A single penny (a Roman silver coin known as a denarius) was a full day s wages at this time. Since the disciples shared a money bag that contained only enough for basic needs and donations to be given to others, it s unlikely they had anywhere near this amount of money available to them. The loaves mentioned here were made out of barley (see John 6:9). Since barley was considered inferior to wheat, these loaves were eaten mainly by the poor :6 8 6 The miracle introduces no disorder, but unfolds the primal order, establishing the Science of God s unchangeable law :24 Spiritual law the only law 24 Jesus walked on the waves, fed the multitude, healed the sick, and raised the dead in direct opposition to material laws. His acts were 27 the demonstration of Science, overcoming the false claims of material sense or law :32 If seed is necessary to produce wheat, and wheat to 1 produce flour, or if one animal can originate another, how then can we account for their primal origin? How 3 were the loaves and fishes multiplied on the shores of Galilee, and that, too, without meal or monad from which loaf or fish could come? :21 21 Understanding is the line of demarcation between the real and unreal. Spiritual understanding unfolds Mind, Life, Truth, and Love, and demonstrates the 24 divine sense, giving the spiritual proof of the universe in Christian Science :6 6 The real jurisdiction of the world is in Mind, controlling every effect and recognizing all causation as vested in divine Mind :28 Creation is ever appearing, and must ever continue to appear from the nature of its inexhaustible source. 30 Mortal sense inverts this appearing and calls ideas material. Thus misinterpreted, the divine idea seems to fall 1 to the level of a human or material belief, called mortal man. But the seed is in itself, only as the divine Mind 3 is All and reproduces all as Mind is the multiplier, and Mind s infinite idea, man and the universe, is the product. The only intelligence or substance of a thought, 6 a seed, or a flower is God, the creator of it. Mind is the Soul of all. Mary Baker Eddy :9 9 Spiritual evolution alone is worthy of the exercise of divine power :26 31 Mind is the grand creator, and there can be no power 27 except that which is derived from Mind. If Mind was first chronologically, is first potentially, and must be first eternally, then give to Mind the 30 glory, honor, dominion, and power everlastingly due its holy name. 15 Habakkuk 2:14 14 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea :11 13, 16 Neither 12 philosophy nor skepticism can hinder the march of the Science which reveals the supremacy of Mind. The compounded minerals or aggregated substances composing the earth, the relations which constituent 18 masses hold to each other, the magnitudes, Spiritual translation distances, and revolutions of the celestial bodies, are of no real importance, when we remember 21 that they all must give place to the spiritual fact by the translation of man and the universe back into Spirit. In proportion as this is done, man and the universe will be 24 found harmonious and eternal :13 How will you use your understanding that the universe is entirely spiritual not composed of matter to pray about world issues? As mortals gain more correct views of God and man, multitudinous objects of creation, which before were 15 invisible, will become visible. 8 BY ELI When I went to get my learner s permit LAST SUMMER, I REALLY WANTED TO GET MY learner s permit so I could start practicing driving. But taking tests of any kind has always felt hard to me. Even though I study and prepare, my test results don t always show what I know. For the permit test, I used the state online testing site taking practice exams to prepare. Though I d studied on and off throughout the year, I still failed my first few attempts at taking the actual test. The biggest struggle for me was knowing what to study, because the Department of Motor Vehicles has so many versions of the exam and you never know which test you re going to get. After many failed attempts, I began to worry that maybe I wouldn t be able to pass. The spiritual fact that I am God-created and able has stuck with me, and it still comes to me when I need it. One of the things that I will always be thankful for is growing up in a family where God is at the center of our lives. Attending the Christian Science Sunday School and reading the weekly Bible Lesson have been my regular practice for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, one thing that my mom always used to say to me before I d go to school was that I could remember that God made me able. This helped me remember that as God s child, I was created with all the intelligence and ability I needed, and my understanding of this would enable me to succeed. I d also learned in Christian Science Sunday School that God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him (Genesis 1:27). Being made in God s image meant that I must be capable. The spiritual fact that I am God-created and able has stuck with me, and it still comes to me when I need it. I decided that it was time to start praying about the test. I called a Christian Science practitioner and told her how I was feeling. The next time I went to take the test she reminded me that I am embraced in the panoply of God s security. That helped me feel calm. She also said that because I m really God s reflection, I can think and act rightly, so I have the scope, liberty, freedom, and space to respond intelligently to the test. My mom and I waited more than two and a half hours at the DMV before I got called up to take the test. On the way up, I reminded myself that God made me able. The lady at the desk smiled at me and said: This is your day. Today you will pass the test! This was like another angel message, a reminder of God s presence and my ability, and she made my day by saying that. I walked into the test with confidence. After I finished, I felt great, and very soon I found out that I d passed! I felt so happy to have my permit in hand. Mom and I decided to go back and thank this woman at the desk, who gave me that encouragement, and show her my permit. Even though taking tests can still feel like a challenge, this experience was a real proof for me that God is present and is helping me. I am so happy to be learning that God really does give me the ability to do all the things I need to do.
