2 1 THE BIBLE Section SCIENCE and HEALTH with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy 1 Isaiah 9:6, 7 6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. 2 I John 4:14 14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. DAVID WAS A SHEPHERD BOY, a famous warrior, and the king of Judah and Israel for forty years. Despite his mistakes, he was remembered as one of the best and most beloved biblical kings. His throne which was a symbol of power, dignity, and government and his family became closely connected with the idea of the Messiah, thanks to many promises from God in the prophetic books of the Bible. Notes SCIENCE and HEALTH The quotation God with us is from Matthew 1:23. You ll find this quote again in Section When a new spiritual idea is borne to earth, the prophetic Scripture of Isaiah is renewedly fulfilled: Unto us a child is born,... and his name shall be 27 called Wonderful : :16 (only, to 2 nd.) SON. The Son of God, the Messiah or Christ :16 23 The advent of Jesus of Nazareth marked the first century of the Christian era, but the Christ is 18 without beginning of years or end of days. Throughout all generations both before and after the Christian era, the Christ, as the spirit- 21 ual idea, the reflection of God, has come with some measure of power and grace to all prepared to receive Christ, Truth. The divine Principle and idea 4 107: In the year 1866, I discovered the Christ Science or divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love, and 3 named my discovery Christian Science. God had been graciously preparing me during many Christian Science discovered years for the reception of this final revelation of the ab- 6 solute divine Principle of scientific mental healing. This apodictical Principle points to the revelation of Immanuel, God with us, the sovereign ever-pres- 9 ence, delivering the children of men from every ill that flesh is heir to. 3 2 3 Matthew 1: THE BIBLE Section SCIENCE and HEALTH with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 29:24 26, The Holy Ghost, or divine Spirit, overshadowed the pure sense of the Virgin-mother with the full recognition that being is Spirit. Jesus was the offspring of Mary s self- 1 conscious communion with God. HOLY GHOST. Divine Science; the development of eternal Life, Truth, and Love :7 7 30:5 8 Born of a woman, Jesus advent in the flesh partook 6 partly of Mary s earthly condition, although he was en- dowed with the Christ, the divine Spirit, without measure. Jesus the way-shower 4 Luke 2:1, 4 14, 16, 17 1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. 16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child :8 13 As a material, theoretical life-basis is found to be a 9 misapprehension of existence, the spiritual and divine Principle of man dawns upon human thought, The immortal birth and leads it to where the young child was, 12 even to the birth of a new-old idea, to the spiritual sense of being and of what Life includes. 9 vii:2 10 The wakeful shepherd beholds 3 the first faint morning beams, ere cometh the full radiance of a risen day. So shone the pale star to the prophetshepherds; yet it traversed the night, and came where, in 6 cradled obscurity, lay the Bethlehem babe, the human herald of Christ, Truth, who would make plain to benighted understanding the way of salvation through Christ 9 Jesus, till across a night of error should dawn the morning beams and shine the guiding star of being :19 Jesus was the highest human concept of the perfect man. He was inseparable from 21 Christ, the Messiah, the divine idea of God outside the flesh. This enabled Jesus to demonstrate his control over matter. Angels announced to the Wisemen of 24 old this dual appearing, and angels whisper it, through faith, to the hungering heart in every age. CAESAR AUGUSTUS was the Roman emperor. At this time, the land that had been the kingdoms of Israel and Judah was under the rule of the Roman Empire. 4 3 5 Luke 2:25, 27 33, 52 THE BIBLE Section SCIENCE and HEALTH with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy 25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. 27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, 28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. 33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. 6 Hebrews 13:8 8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to-day, and for ever :31 The divinity of the Christ was made manifest in the humanity of Jesus :12 12 This Christ, or divinity of the man Jesus, was his divine nature, the godliness which animated him. Divine Truth, 15 Life, and Love gave Jesus authority over sin, sickness, and death. His mission was to reveal the Science of celestial being, to prove what God is and what He does 18 for man. Christ s demonstration :4 Christian Science reveals incontrovertibly that Mind is All-in-all, that the only realities are the divine Mind 6 and idea. This great fact is not, however, seen Scientific evidence to be supported by sensible evidence, until its divine Principle is demonstrated by healing the sick and 9 thus proved absolute and divine. This proof once seen, no other conclusion can be reached. For a better understanding of the Holy Ghost, take a look at its Glossary definition in Section 2 and some more insights from Mary Baker Eddy on p. 46:30 of Science and Health. When Jesus was a baby, Mary and Joseph brought him to the Temple to show him to the priests. The laws of Moses stated that this was a requirement for firstborn children (see Exodus 13:2). NOTES :19 When apparently near the confines of mortal existence, standing already within the shadow of the death-valley, 21 I learned these truths in divine Science: that Light shining in darkness all real being is in God, the divine Mind, and that Life, Truth, and Love are all-powerful and ever- 24 present; that the opposite of Truth, called error, sin, sickness, disease, death, is the false testimony of false material sense, of mind in matter; that this false sense 27 evolves, in belief, a subjective state of mortal mind which this same so-called mind names matter, thereby shutting out the true sense of Spirit :28 30 All we correctly know of Spirit comes from God, divine Principle, and is learned through Christ and Christian 30 Science. animated: gave life, power, and spirit to celestial: heavenly; divine incontrovertibly: undeniably; in a way that cannot be disproven sensible: perceptible by the senses confines: limits; boundaries; end Christian Science 4

5 4 SCIENCE and HEALTH with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy 7 Matthew 9: And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; 38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. 8 John 14:12, Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. 13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son :26 Christianity as Jesus taught it was not 27 a creed, nor a system of ceremonies, nor a special gift from a ritualistic Jehovah; but it was the demonstration of divine Love casting out error and healing the sick, 30 not merely in the name of Christ, or Truth, but in demon stration of Truth, as must be the case in the cycles of divine light. 17 xi: To preach deliverance to the captives [of sense], And recovering of sight to the blind, To set at liberty them that are bruised. AGRICULTURAL references, like shepherding, planting, and harvesting, because so many of the people he preached to were involved in some form of farming. Harvesting sometimes involved many members of a community since large fields of wheat and barley, as well as orchards of olives and figs, had to be cut, picked, and collected by hand (as in the illustration below). What does the harvest symbolize in Jesus s comment? Now, as then, these mighty works are not supernatural, but supremely natural. 6 5 9 John 13:31 Jesus THE BIBLE Section SCIENCE and HEALTH with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy 31 Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 10 John 14: If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 11 John 15:26 when, when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: 27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning : Truth s immortal idea is sweeping down the centuries, gathering beneath its wings the sick and sinning. My weary hope tries to realize that happy day, when man shall 18 recognize the Science of Christ and love his neighbor as himself, when he shall realize God s omnipotence and the healing power of the divine Love in what it has done 21 and is doing for mankind. The promises will be fulfilled. The time for the reappearing of the divine healing is throughout all time; and whosoever layeth his earthly 24 all on the altar of divine Science, drinketh of Christ s cup now, and is endued with the spirit and power of Christian healing. 27 In the words of St. John: He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever. This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science :4 8 To-day the healing power of Truth is widely demonstrated as an immanent, eternal Science, instead of a 6 phenomenal exhibition. Its appearing is the coming anew of the gospel of on earth peace, good-will toward men. The main purpose IT S PROBABLY NOT A SURPRISE that keeping the commandments is a theme throughout the Bible. Jesus s words here echo part of the Second Commandment (see Exodus 20:4 6). Keeping the commandments is paired with loving God several times in the Old Testament take a look at Deuteronomy 11:22, Joshua 22:5, and Daniel 9:4 for examples. endued: supplied; gifted; permanently provided immanent: natural; inherent; intrinsic; essential phenomenal: unusual; extraordinary; unaccountable requisite: required; needed; indispensable assimilate: incorporate; absorb; make use of imbibes: receives; absorbs; drinks in supplant: remove; displace; overthrow NOTES What do you find comforting about Divine Science as the Comforter? 24 xi:22 When God called the author to proclaim His Gospel to this age, there came also the charge to plant and 24 water His vineyard :5 The author has endeavored 6 to make this book the Æsculapius of mind as well as of body, that it may give hope to the sick and heal them, although they know not how the work is done. Truth 9 has a healing effect, even when not fully understood :31 Systematic teaching and the student s spiritual growth and experience in practice are requisite for a thorough 1 comprehension of Christian Science. Some individuals assimilate truth more readily than others, but any 3 student, who adheres to the divine rules Rapidity of assimilation of Christian Science and imbibes the spirit of Christ, can demonstrate Christian Science, cast out 6 error, heal the sick, and add continually to his store of spiritual understanding, potency, enlightenment, and success :20 Let Christian Science, 21 instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of being, and this understanding will supplant error with Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence dis- 24 cord with harmony. The word translated here as mercies is from the Greek word oikteiro, which relates to having compassion on something :18 Universal 18 Universal Love is the divine way in Christian Science :15 15 Hold perpetually this thought, that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, 18 based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being :10 12 Through divine Science, Spirit, God, unites understanding to eternal harmony. 8 BY MAGGIE A bag and an identity restored MY SISTER HAD COME FROM TOGO TO spend the Christmas and New Year holidays of 2004/5 with me and my husband. When the time came for her to return home, we called a taxi to take her to the airport. We live in a Parisian suburb that is known for its poverty and violence. I left with my sister in the taxi that afternoon. No sooner had we set off than the taxi had to pull up at a stop. There was a group of youngsters on the pavement. One of them approached the door on the right side of the taxi, and we and the woman driver thought he wanted to speak to us. But to our surprise, he opened the door, took the driver s bag and coolly walked off. We shouted in protest, but he didn t turn back. This taxi driver could not be a victim of injustice. I got out and ran after him, shouting for him to come back with the bag. Then he started to run and I couldn t keep up with him. Initially rather stunned, the taxi driver caught up with me. Everyone there had seen what had happened, and we came back to the group of youths who had stayed close to the taxi. I started to tell them that I was sure they must know the boy who had taken the bag, and that I expected them to do whatever was necessary to return the bag to its owner. The driver explained that all her personal papers, plus those for the vehicle, were in the bag. Without them she couldn t carry on her job. She added that they could keep the money if they wished, but that she really needed to find her papers. Having given the young people my cell-phone number, so they could contact me once the bag had been found, I felt led to tell them I had often seen them around and that I knew people accused them of being hooligans, but I knew they were really very honest. Straight away they said, We ll do everything to find your bag. Time was getting on and we had to get back on our way to the airport. Throughout the journey, which took about half an hour, I prayed to understand that God had never made a thief, nor could anyone in our district, or anywhere else, be the victim of exclusion. Not a word passed between us, but my sister and I both knew the other was praying. We affirmed that God, infinite Love, was governing all His creation harmoniously. This taxi driver could not be a victim of injustice. Several ideas that I had thought of during the Christmas holidays came back to my thought, including one from the prophet Isaiah: the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (7:14). This concept of Immanuel, meaning God with us, had given me much inspiration to pray for my district, in particular for my apartment building, where there had been many acts of vandalism. I had gained a better understanding. God with us doesn t mean with mortals, but He is always with His perfect spiritual idea, His pure and upright manifestation, which is what man is in reality. Right where the physical senses showed us difficult young people, right there were God s children, pure, honest, complete and therefore satisfied. The best present these young people could be given on this New Year s holiday was to restore to them their true identity as children of God to see them as the Father made them, in His image and likeness. This was certainly my prayer for them, and the vandalism did not recur. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE Christian Science 8

9 As I thought back on all this in the taxi, I became calmer and calmer. I also thought of Psalm 139: Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me. I was reassured with the knowledge that God is omnipresent, always, and that His government and His control of His creation is absolute. The young man who had run off could not get outside the government of God or act in opposition to his own true nature as the child of God. I realized, suddenly, that the scene which had been played out before us like a film had no reality in divine Love, which was all around us. I was then at peace about the whole business and found that the atmosphere in the taxi had changed. Our driver herself started speaking spontaneously about God, saying that she believed in God and had not been afraid. As we arrived at the airport, my phone rang before we had time to get out of the taxi. One of the youths phoned to say that the bag had been found and that we could come and pick it up at the spot where the incident had occurred. After dropping off my sister, we returned to the location and the bag was restored to its owner, complete with all its contents including the money. The driver was so happy that she gave them a small reward. We all said goodbye very happily, and the faces of the young people showed their pride at being able to prove their honesty. They were people who kept their word. Their true identity was preserved.
