Man and woman as coexistent and eternal with God forever reflect, in glorified quality, the infinite Father-Mother God :30 30 Divine Love blesses its own ideas, and causes them to multiply, to manifest His power. Man is not made 1 to till the soil. His birthright is dominion, not subjection. He is lord of the belief in earth 3 and heaven, himself subordinate alone to his Maker. This is the Science of being. Birthright of man 3 475:6 Man 6 Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements. The Scriptures inform us that man is made in Fleshly factors unreal 9 the image and likeness of God. Matter is not that likeness. The likeness of Spirit cannot be so unlike Spirit. Man is spiritual and perfect; and be- 12 cause he is spiritual and perfect, he must be so understood in Christian Science. Man is idea, the image, of Love; he is not physique. He is the compound idea of 15 God, including all right ideas; the generic term for all that reflects God s image and likeness; the conscious identity of being as found in Science, in which man is 18 the reflection of God, or Mind, and therefore is eternal; that which has no separate mind from God; that which has not a single quality underived from Deity; that which 21 possesses no life, intelligence, nor creative power of his own, but reflects spiritually all that belongs to his Maker. Is that your happy dance? It is! I m grateful we have God-given dominion over the earth. Think peace and permanence! How can a permanent, spiritual sense of peace help you? coexistent: existing together at the same time subjection: oppression; enslavement physique: material body its proportions, muscular development, and appearance compound: complex; made up of two or more elements generic: general; inclusive; broad; comprehensive underived from: not originating in; not received from Doing homework? Singing? Playing a sport? How can you manifest God s dominion and power in everything you do? Man 2

The human capacities are enlarged and perfected in proportion as humanity gains the true conception of man and God. Science and Health, p. 258 MODEL USED FOR ILLUSTRATIVE PURPOSES 336: Immortal man was and is God s image or idea, even the infinite expression of infinite Mind, and immortal man is coexistent and coeternal with that The real manhood 12 Mind. He has been forever in the eternal Mind, God; but infinite Mind can never be in man, but is reflected by man. The spiritual man s consciousness 15 and individuality are reflections of God. They are the emanations of Him who is Life, Truth, and Love :5 God is one. The 6 allness of Deity is His oneness. Generically man is one, and specifically man means all men :13 24, 31 1 God expresses in man the infinite idea forever developing itself, broadening and rising higher and higher from 15 a boundless basis. Mind manifests all that exists in the infinitude of Truth. We know no more of man as the true divine image and likeness, than we know of 18 God. The infinite Principle is reflected by the infinite idea and spiritual individuality, but the material so-called senses 21 have no cognizance of either Principle or its idea. The human capacities are enlarged and perfected in proportion as humanity gains the true conception of man and 24 God. Through spiritual sense you can discern the heart of divinity, and thus begin to comprehend in Science the 1 generic term man. What do you know of God? How does this understanding help you resolve conflict and overcome limitation? in vain: to be a waste; to no purpose inhabited: lived in; occupied coeternal: equally eternal boundless: limitless; endless infinitude: endlessness; quality or condition of being infinite cognizance: knowledge; awareness; notice 7 265:5 15 Mortals must gravitate Godward, 6 their affections and aims grow spiritual, they must near the broader interpretations of being, and gain some proper sense of the infinite, in order that sin and mortality 9 may be put off. This scientific sense of being, forsaking matter for Spirit, by no means suggests man s absorption into Deity 12 and the loss of his identity, but confers upon man enlarged individuality, a wider sphere of thought and action, a more expansive love, a higher and more permanent 15 peace. GRAVITATING GODWARD Ssscandalous! I was hoping they d gravitate my way. error Being more spiritually minded Being more grateful Being more joyful Being more unselfish Being more honest The more you know of God, and the more you practice what you know, the more you ll see how you reflect Him uniquely. A wicked man 27 may have an attractive personality :16 Absorbed in material selfhood we discern and reflect but faintly the substance of Life or Mind. The denial of 18 material selfhood aids the discernment of man s spiritual and eternal individuality, and destroys the erroneous knowledge gained from matter or through what are termed 21 the material senses : Beauty, wealth, or fame is incompetent to meet the demands of the affections, and should never weigh against the better claims of intellect, good- 18 ness, and virtue. Affection s demands 11 Psalms 37:35 37 I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. 36 Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found. 37 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. 12 Colossians 3:4, 9, 10 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Your real life is Christ and when he appears, then you too will appear with him and share his glory! 9 Do not lie to one another, for you have put off the old self with its habits 10 and have put on the new self. This is the new being which God, its Creator, is constantly renewing in his own image, in order to bring you to a full knowledge of himself. Let it be understood that success in error is defeat in Truth. The watchword of Christian Science is Scriptural: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the 15 unrighteous man his thoughts :3 5 3 Mortal mind must part with error, must put off itself with its deeds, and immortal manhood, the Christ ideal, will appear. This is no part of me! Life all-inclusive controversy: dispute; complaint; argument deputed: appointed to represent; sent with special authority do him obeisance: bow before him; show reverence or respect erroneous: mistaken; inaccurate; misleading incompetent: inadequate; unable; unfit virtue: integrity; honor; goodness; behavior showing high moral standards conciliate: win over by pleasing; gain good favor Man 4

For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God s children. 17 And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God s glory.... Romans 8:16, 17 (in part) New Living Translation How can understanding your inheritance of unlimited ability, infinite intelligence, and permanent health from God help you claim your dominion over limitations and sickness? Man washing his eyes in the Pool of Siloam 63:5 In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beauti- 6 ful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry. His origin is not, like that of mortals, in brute instinct, nor does he pass through material conditions prior 9 to reaching intelligence. Spirit is his primitive and ultimate source of being; God is his Father, and Life is the law of his being. Spiritual origin :7 13 When will the error of believing that there is life in matter, and that sin, sickness, and death are creations of 9 God, be unmasked? When will it be under- Creation perfect stood that matter has neither intelligence, life, nor sensation, and that the opposite belief is the prolific 12 source of all suffering? God created all through Mind, and made all perfect and eternal :20 26, 31 Think less of the enactments of mortal mind, and you 21 will sooner grasp man s God-given dominion. You must understand your way out of human theories God-given dominion relating to health, or you will never believe 24 that you are quite free from some ailment. The harmony and immortality of man will never be reached without the understanding that Mind is not in matter. Christ Jesus overruled the error which would impose penalties for transgressions of the physical laws of 1 health; he annulled supposed laws of matter, opposed to the harmonies of Spirit, lacking divine au- 3 thority and having only human approval for their sanction. Begin rightly : The transmission of disease or of certain idiosyncrasies of mortal mind would be impossible if this great fact of being were learned, namely, that nothing No fleshly heredity 6 inharmonious can enter being, for Life is God. Heredity is a prolific subject for mortal belief to pin theories upon; but if we learn that nothing is real but the 9 right, we shall have no dangerous inheritances, and fleshly ills will disappear. The enslavement of man is not legitimate. It will 12 cease when man enters into his heritage of freedom, his God-given dominion over the material senses :31 1 The eternal Truth destroys what mortals seem to have learned from error, and man s real existence as a child 1 of God comes to light. Eternal TRUTH belief of heredity Eternal TRUTH enactments: laws; rulings; decrees transmission: passing or spreading from one person or thing to another idiosyncrasies: quirks; traits; peculiarities prolific: abundant; plentiful; fertile Man 5

Psalms 4:6 (in part) New International Version I have always found the understanding that God is my Life to be wonderfully buoying :17 19 Man is, and forever has been, God s re- 18 flection. God is infinite, therefore ever present, and there is no other power nor presence :28 Man s entity spiritual Spiritual man is the image or idea of God, an idea which cannot be lost nor sep- 30 arated from its divine Principle. When the evidence before the material senses yielded to spiritual sense, the apostle declared that nothing could alienate him from 1 God, from the sweet sense and presence of Life and Truth. Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, 6 and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense :5 Accidents unknown to God 9 of God s unerring direction and thus bring out harmony :25 Undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses, Science, still enthroned, is unfolding 27 to mortals the immutable, harmonious, divine Principle, is unfolding Life and the universe, ever present and eternal :17 The days 18 of our pilgrimage will multiply instead of diminish, when God s kingdom comes on earth; for the true way leads to Life instead of to death, and earthly 21 experience discloses the finity of error and the infinite capacities of Truth, in which God gives man dominion over all the earth. 8 BY MORIAH The Christ in my life LAST YEAR I BEGAN A STUDY ABROAD YEAR AT a university in Munich, Germany. In the first month, I immediately had many opportunities to learn more about God, to put into practice what I was learning, and to experience healing. One morning in the third week after my arrival, I woke up early and felt extremely lonely and homesick. I had been feeling this way a lot and it came in waves some days I would be really happy and grateful to be abroad and then a second later I would feel overwhelmed, sad, and alone. I had prayed a lot ever since I got to Germany, but quite honestly I don t think that I had been living consistently with my prayers (see Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 9). On this particular morning I received a text, out of the blue, from a close friend who lives in Munich and who is a Christian Science practitioner. She wanted to share some spiritual ideas with me that had come to her. I read her text numerous times, letting the ideas sink in. In particular, I really took the message to heart to let my light shine. I was already familiar with these words by Christ Jesus from his Sermon on the Mount, in which he urged his listeners: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which I deeply felt the healing influence of the Christ in my life. is in heaven (Matthew 5:16). She also encouraged me not to wait until people recognized my goodness, but rather to begin to see others first in the way that God sees them. Not only did I take these concepts to heart, I also began to really live them. Over the next few days I found ways to let my light shine to step outside of myself, to turn outward and to look for opportunities to actively love others. As I began to practice what I was learning in Christian Science, the loneliness and homesickness simply vanished and didn t return. I thanked God for my friend and the inspiration she had received. I deeply felt the healing influence of the Christ in my life and knew it was in my friend s life, too. This experience helped me see more clearly that we find true joy, comfort, and peace when we focus thought outward, when we demonstrate divine Love by giving to others, and when we cherish and appreciate all that God has created. A second experience I d like to share happened a few days later. I was planning to run in a 10K race on Sunday. This race was part of the Munich Marathon, and a couple of thousand runners would be participating in the 10K. I was really looking forward to it, since I had been planning and training for it for several months. On Saturday I began to experience flu-like symptoms. By the evening I felt very unwell. At first I was afraid that I wouldn t be able to run. Immediately, I turned to God and spent a couple of hours earnestly praying. I firmly held on to the fact, as taught in Christian Science, that I am spiritual, not material. I knew that turning to God for healing is effective and that the mental suggestion of flu could have absolutely no impact on me as God s spiritual idea. The more I prayed, the more I felt a very deep conviction that I would be able to participate in the run. During my prayers, I received an from a friend who was also going to run on Sunday. She told me that she had come down with some kind of bug, and so was unsure if she would be able to run. Immediately I realized that I needed to extend my prayers beyond myself and handle the suggestion of contagion. I acknowledged that the fear of falling ill is what perpetuates contagion and that the antidote to fear is love. If our thought is filled with love for God and love for our neighbor, there is no room for fear to breed contagion. This brings to mind a hymn that I was working with, Hymn 145 from the Christian Science Hymnal. Part of it reads: In atmosphere of Love divine, / We live, and move, and breathe (adapt., CSBD). I realized that the atmosphere of Love is all there is, and that s the atmosphere we truly live in! That night I went to bed feeling very reassured and absolutely certain I would be able to run. When I woke up, I felt completely well. I went to my race, ran the fastest I had ever run for a long distance, and felt a complete freedom from all the symptoms that had tried to present themselves the day before. I am so grateful for these two experiences. They continue to teach me that the Christ the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness (Science and Health, p. 332) is an ever-present influence in our lives, and that by turning to prayer and to God for healing, we can feel a deep conviction that divine Love will guide and protect us and enable us to accomplish whatever we are required to do.
