2 4 Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple. 5 I Corinthians 6:19, What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God s. Section :19 2 Question. What are body and Soul? Answer. Identity is the reflection of Spirit, the re- 21 flection in multifarious forms of the living Principle, Love. Soul is the substance, Life, and intelli- Reflection gence of man, which is individualized, but not of Spirit 24 in matter. Soul can never reflect anything inferior to Spirit. Man is the expression of Soul. The Indians caught 27 some glimpses of the underlying reality, when they called a certain beautiful lake the smile Man inseparable from Spirit of the Great Spirit. Separated from man, 30 who expresses Soul, Spirit would be a nonentity; man, divorced from Spirit, would lose his entity. But there is, 1 there can be, no such division, for man is coexistent with God :25 30 Rightly understood, instead of possessing a sentient material form, man has a sensationless body; and God, 27 the Soul of man and of all existence, being perpetual in His own individuality, harmony, Sensationless body and immortality, imparts and perpetuates these qualities 30 in man, through Mind, not matter :3 8 3 The material body and mind are temporal, but the real man is spiritual and eternal. The identity of the real man is not lost, but found through this 6 explanation; for the conscious infinitude of existence and of all identity is thereby discerned and remains unchanged :7 Temple. Body; the idea of Life, substance, and intelligence; the superstructure of Truth; the shrine of 9 Love; a material superstructure, where mortals congregate for worship :20 The true 21 worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth. 3 6 I Kings 8:22, 23, 27 Section 2 22 And Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven: 23 And he said, Lord God of Israel, there is no God like thee, in heaven above, or on earth beneath, who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart: 27 But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded? 7 Psalms 50:1, 2 1 The mighty God, even the Lord, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof. 2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined. 8 Psalms 66:8, 9 8 O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of his praise to be heard: 9 Which holdeth our soul in life, and suffereth not our feet to be moved. 9 Acts 17:24, 25, 28 (to ;) 24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25 Neither is worshipped with men s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; 6 477:6 7 Section 2 6 Man is not a material habitation for Soul; he is himself spiritual :3 8 3 What evidence of Soul or of immortality have you within mortality? Even according to the teachings of natural science, man has never beheld Spirit 6 or Soul leaving a body or entering it. What basis is there for the theory of indwelling spirit, except the claim of mortal belief? A vacant domicile 8 467:17 23 Science reveals Spirit, Soul, as not in the body, and 18 God as not in man but as reflected by man. The greater cannot be in the lesser. The belief that the Soul not confined in body greater can be in the lesser is an error that 21 works ill. This is a leading point in the Science of Soul, that Principle is not in its idea. Spirit, Soul, is not confined in man, and is never in matter :14 Through false estimates of soul as dwelling in sense 15 and of mind as dwelling in matter, belief strays into a sense of temporary loss or absence of soul, spir- Soul itual truth. This state of error is the mortal impeccable 18 dream of life and substance as existent in matter, and is directly opposite to the immortal reality of being. 4 as we believe that soul can sin or that immortal Soul is in 21 mortal body, we can never understand the Science of being. When humanity does understand this Science, it will become the law of Life to man, even the higher law 24 of Soul, which prevails over material sense through harmony and immortality :12 12 Man is not God, but like a ray of light which comes from the sun, man, the outcome of God, reflects God. 10 Jeremiah 7:4, 30 Section 3 4 Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, are these. 30 For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, saith the Lord: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to pollute it. 11 II Corinthians 6:16 what (to 1 st ;), 17, what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. 12 Romans 8:5 5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 13 Romans 12:1, 2 1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Section :25 31 A A material body only expresses a material and mortal mind. A mortal 27 man possesses this body, and he makes it harmonious or discordant according to the Sickness as only thought images of thought impressed upon it. You embrace 30 your body in your thought, and you should delineate upon it thoughts of health, not of sickness :24 24 If thought yields its dominion to other powers, it cannot outline on the body its own beautiful images, but it effaces them and delineates foreign agents, 27 called disease and sin The Christian Science Publishing Society. 5 13 324:7 12 Unless the harmony and immortality of man are becoming more apparent, we are not gaining the true idea 9 of God; and the body will reflect what gov- erns it, whether it be Truth or error, understanding or belief, Spirit or matter. Therefore 12 acquaint now thyself with Him, and be at peace :18 18 Man is harmonious when governed by Soul. Hence the importance of understanding the truth of being, which reveals the laws of spiritual existence. 14 Psalms 42:11 Section 4 Narrow pathway 11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. 15 Ezekiel 37:1 5, 10, 11 (to 2 nd :), 12 1 The hand of the Lord was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones, 2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry. 3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? 6 15 373:1 5 Section 4 1 If we are Christians on all moral questions, but are in darkness as to the physical exemption which Christian- 3 ity includes, then we must have more faith in God on this subject and be more alive to His promises :4 8 The prophet of to-day beholds in the mental horizon the signs of these times, the reappearance of the Chris- 6 tianity which heals the sick and destroys error, and no other sign shall be given. Body cannot be saved except through Mind :29 31 Bones have 30 only the substance of thought which forms them :23 26 Spiritual foreshadowings Formation from thought Consciousness constructs a better body when 24 faith in matter has been conquered. Correct material belief by spiritual understanding, and Spirit will form you anew :19, The Science of being reveals man as perfect, even as the Father is perfect, because the Soul, or Mind, 21 of the spiritual man is God, the divine Principle of all being, and because this real man is governed by Soul instead of sense, by the law of Spirit, not by the so-called 24 laws of matter. Man s true consciousness 27 is in the mental, not in any bodily or personal likeness to Spirit :23 27 Christian Science explains all cause and effect as men- 24 tal, not physical. It lifts the veil of mystery from Soul and body. It shows the scientific relation of man to God, disentangles the interlaced ambiguities 27 of being, and sets free the imprisoned thought. 18 Matthew 9:35 Section 5 35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 19 Matthew 5:1, 2, 8 Causation mental 1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: 2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, 8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God The Christian Science Publishing Society. 7 20 Matthew 6:22 22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 21 Matthew 21: And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, 13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves. 14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them. Section :19 As the individual ideal of Truth, Christ Jesus came to rebuke rabbinical error and all sin, sickness, and death, 21 to point out the way of Truth and Life. This ideal was demonstrated throughout the whole Rebukes helpful earthly career of Jesus, showing the difference between 24 the offspring of Soul and of material sense, of Truth and of error :11 16 Knowing that Soul and its attributes were forever 12 manifested through man, the Master healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, feet to the lame, thus bringing to light the scientific action of the 15 divine Mind on human minds and bodies and giving a better understanding of Soul and salvation :7 Christ, Truth, was demonstrated through Jesus to prove the power of 9 Spirit over the flesh, to show that Truth is made manifest by its effects upon the human mind and body, healing sickness and destroying sin :2 Look away from the body into Truth and Love, 3 the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality. Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these 6 into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts :12 16 Thoughts are things 12 As human thought changes from one stage to another of conscious pain and painlessness, sorrow and joy, from fear to hope and from faith to understand- 15 ing, the visible manifestation will at last be man governed by Soul, not by material sense The Christian Science Publishing Society. 8 22 Ephesians 2:19 22 ye Section 6 19 ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: 22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. 23 I Corinthians 12:4 6, 12 4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. 12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. 24 Ephesians 5:23 Christ 23 Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body :1 5 Section 6 1 Jesus established his church and maintained his mission on a spiritual foundation of Christ-healing. He taught 3 his followers that his religion had a divine Principle, which would cast out error and heal both the sick and the sinning :12 19 The Christ-mission 12 Church. The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle. The Church is that institution, which affords proof of 15 its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of 18 divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick :20 The chief stones in the temple of Christian Science are 21 to be found in the following postulates: that Life is God, good, and not evil; that Soul is sinless, not to be found in the body; that Spirit is not, and 24 cannot be, materialized; that Life is not subject The chief stones in the temple to death; that the spiritual real man has no birth, no material life, and no death :32 7 Do you say the time has not yet come in which to 1 recognize Soul as substantial and able to control the body? 9 30 428:3 6 A, 8 3 A demonstration of the facts of Soul in Jesus way resolves the dark visions of material sense into harmony and 6 immortality. To divest 9 thought of false trusts and material evidences in order that the spiritual facts of being may appear, this is the great attainment by means of which we shall sweep 12 away the false and give place to the true.
