2 1 1 Job 14:1, 2 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. 2 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. 2 Job 5:8 I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause: 3 John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 4 John 1:12 as, 13 as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother s womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. 5 John 3:1 8 6 Ephesians 4:24 put put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. BIBLE SCHOLARS explain that Pharisees were common people that were highly educated. They were tasked with interpreting the laws of Moses and went to great lengths to explain and uphold them in the best way they knew how. The Pharisees also believed there was resurrection after death a belief not shared by all temple rulers. The true model is who you really are. How could you be more conscious of your true self today? begotten: fathered; procreated; produced listeth: wishes; wants to inquiring: questioning; looking into; investigating sham: phony; false; bogus counterfeits: look-alikes; fakes; imitations entertain: host; make comfortable; give attention to constitute: compose; form; establish; organize subordinate: make less important; subject; lower; reduce testimony: statements made by defendants or witnesses in court corporeal: related to the material body coexistent: existing in the same space and time 1 31:4 (only), 10 Jesus acknowledged no ties of the flesh. He recognized Spirit, God, as the only creator, and therefore as the Father of all :13 17 Human experience in mortal life, which starts from an egg, corresponds with that of Job, when he says, Man 15 that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. Mortals must emerge from Emergence of mortals this notion of material life as all-in-all :16 23 Searching for the origin of man, who is the reflection of God, is like inquiring into the origin of God, the self- 18 existent and eternal. Only impotent error would seek to unite Spirit with matter, good The origin of divinity with evil, immortality with mortality, and call this 21 sham unity man, as if man were the offspring of both Mind and matter, of both Deity and humanity. Creation rests on a spiritual basis :20 The real man is 21 spiritual and immortal, but the mortal and imperfect so-called children of men are counterfeits from the beginning, to be laid aside for the pure reality. This 24 mortal is put off, and the new man or real man is put on, in proportion as mortals realize the Science of man and seek the true model :13 Every agony of mortal error helps error to destroy error, and so aids the apprehension 15 of immortal Truth. This is the new birth going on hourly, by which men may entertain angels, the true ideas of God, the spiritual sense of being :4, 21 The substance, Life, intelligence, Truth, and Love, which constitute Deity, are reflected by His creation; 6 and when we subordinate the false testimony of the corporeal senses to the facts of Science, we shall see this true likeness and reflection everywhere. 21 Man and woman as coexistent and eternal with God forever reflect, in glorified quality, the infinite Father-Mother God. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. 8 Romans 6:14 sin (to :) sin shall not have dominion over you: 9 I John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. His life-giving power lives in them and makes them his children, so that they cannot keep on sinning. I John 3:9 Contemporary English Version 475:28 1 The (to 1 st.) The real man cannot depart from holiness, nor 30 can God, by whom man is evolved, engender the capacity or freedom to sin. A mortal sinner is not 1 God s man. The belief of sin, which has grown terrible in strength and influence, is an uncon- 6 scious error in the beginning, an embryonic thought without motive; but afterwards it governs the so-called man. Man unfallen 8 188:4 8 Embryonic sinful thoughts 9 259: In divine Science, man is the true image of God. The divine nature was best expressed in Christ Jesus, who threw upon mortals the truer reflection of God and lifted 9 their lives higher than their poor thought-models would allow, thoughts which presented man as fallen, sick, sinning, and dying :13 17, 21 22, 32 2 Mortals are not fallen children of God. They never had a perfect state of being, 15 which may subsequently be regained. They were, from the beginning of mortal history, conceived in sin and brought forth in iniquity. 21 Learn this, O mortal, and earnestly seek the spiritual status of man, which is outside of all material selfhood. Jesus beheld in Science the per- 1 fect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals :3 3 When forgiving the adulterous woman he said, Go, and sin no more. belief of sin dominion over sin lief of belief of sin of adultery: infidelity; immoral, impure thought or action condemned: completely disapproved; severely punished, usually by death evolved: developed from a simple to a more complex state engender: cause; produce; provoke capacity: ability influence: effect over the behavior or character of another embryonic: just beginning to develop mortals: those who are destined to die subsequently: after a thing has happened sonship: relationship of child to parent :3 7 3 The real man being linked by Science to his Maker, mortals need only turn from sin and lose sight of mortal 6 selfhood to find Christ, the real man and his relation to God, and to recognize the divine sonship. Jesus as mediator :19 Immortal Immortal man demonstrates the government of God, good, 21 in which is no power to sin. THE BIBLE gives no indication of why only the woman was accused and not the man with whom she committed adultery, as Mosaic law required (see Leviticus 20:10 and Deuteronomy 22:22). This kind of omission is common in ancient stories, which were often written to teach lessons more than to offer a complete set of facts. 3

4 3 10 John 9:1 3 (to :), 6, 7 A :10 14 nd as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? 3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: 6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, 7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. 11 Psalms 3:7 (to :), 8 (to 1 st.) Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God: 8 Salvation belongeth unto the Lord: thy blessing is upon thy people. 12 Psalms 2:7 the Lord the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. JEWISH PEOPLE believed that all physical impairments were the result of sin. So this man was not only seen by others as unfortunate because of blindness, but he was seen as a public example of the result of sinful behavior. This healing not only gave him his sight, but released him and his parents from public judgment as well. Mortal Discord The Pool of Siloam was a rock-cut reservoir within the city limits of Jerusalem. Whatever reflects Mind, Life, Truth, and Love, is spiritually conceived and 12 brought forth; but the statement that man is conceived and evolved both spiritually and materially, or by both God and man, contradicts this eternal truth :32 Naturalists describe the origin of mortal and material 1 existence in the various forms of embryology, and accompany their descriptions with important observations, 3 which should awaken thought to a higher and purer contemplation of man s origin. This clearer consciousness must precede an under- Better basis than embryology 6 standing of the harmony of being. Mortal thought must obtain a better basis, get nearer the truth of being, or health will never be universal, and harmony will never 9 become the standard of man :27 28 (to 1 st.), The foundation of mortal discord is a false sense of man s origin. Mind the only cause 30 Divine Mind is the only cause or Principle of existence. Cause does not exist in matter, in mortal mind, or in physical forms :3 3 The transmission of disease or of certain idiosyncrasies of mortal mind would be impossible if this great fact of being were learned, namely, that nothing No fleshly 6 inharmonious can enter being, for Life is God. heredity Heredity is a prolific subject for mortal belief to pin theories upon; but if we learn that nothing is real but the 9 right, we shall have no dangerous inheritances, and fleshly ills will disappear :5 In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beauti- 6 ful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry. His origin is not, like that of mortals, in brute instinct, nor Spiritual does he pass through material conditions prior origin 9 to reaching intelligence. Spirit is his primitive and ultimate source of being; God is his Father, and Life is the law of his being. False sense of man s origin conceived: originally thought; formed; made known naturalists: experts in animal and plant life embryology: the biological study of organisms in their earliest stage of development precede: occur before universal: without exception; all-inclusive; comprehensive; all-embracing origin: parentage; ancestry; source transmission: passing; spreading idiosyncrasies: quirks; unique habits prolific: abundant; fertile brute: savage; violent; animalistic; unreasoning How do you see beauty, goodness, and purity in yourself and others right now? 4

5 4 13 Romans 8:16 19 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: A 14 Luke 8:41, 42 (to 1 st.), there (to :) nd, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus feet, and besought him that he would come into his house: 42 For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a-dying. 49 there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue s house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. 50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole. 51 And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. 52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth. 53 And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. 54 And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise. 55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat. 56 And her parents were astonished: 15 Romans 9:26 in in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. The spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love. 1 Sensual and mortal beliefs; counterfeits of creation, whose better originals are God s thoughts, not in em- 3 bryo, but in maturity; material suppositions of life, substance, and intelligence, opposed to the Science of being :11 Matter cannot connect mortals with the true 12 origin and facts of being, in which all must end. It is only by acknowledging the supremacy of Spirit, which annuls the claims of matter, that mortals can lay off mortality and 15 find the indissoluble spiritual link which establishes man forever in the divine likeness, inseparable from his creator :20 23 If Life has any starting- 21 point whatsoever, then the great I am is a myth. If Life is God, as the Scriptures imply, then Life is not embryonic, it is infinite : Jesus spiritual origin and understanding enabled him to demonstrate the facts of being, to prove irrefutably how spiritual Truth destroys material error, 24 heals sickness, and overcomes death. Immaculate conception :23 28, The relinquishment of all faith in death and also of 24 the fear of its sting would raise the standard of health and morals far beyond its present elevation, Christian standard and would enable us to hold the banner of 27 Christianity aloft with unflinching faith in God, in Life eternal. Man is immortal, and 30 the body cannot die, because matter has no life to surrender. faith in death beareth: carries; brings bewailed: expressed deep sorrow; cried loudly astonished: overwhelmed; amazed sensual: physical; worldly acknowledging: accepting; conceding; recognizing annuls: makes nothing; cancels; makes invalid inseparable: not able to be separated imply: suggest the logic or truth of something irrefutably: unquestionably; certainly immaculate: free of flaws or mistakes; completely pure; totally clean relinquishment: release; abandonment apparent: obvious; clearly visible :7, 18 Life demonstrates Life. The immortality of Soul makes man immortal. If God, who is Life, were parted for a 9 moment from His reflection, man, during that Divinity not childless moment there would be no divinity reflected. The Ego would be unexpressed, and the Father would be 12 childless, no Father. 18 But man cannot be separated for an instant from God, if man reflects God. Thus Science proves man s existence to be intact :22 The great spiritual fact must be brought out that man is, not shall be, perfect and immortal. We must hold 24 forever the consciousness of existence, and The present immortality sooner or later, through Christ and Christian Science, we must master sin and death. The evidence 27 of man s immortality will become more apparent, as material beliefs are given up and the immortal facts of being are admitted. 5

The 3 problem of nothingness, or dust to dust, will be solved, and mortal mind will be without :2 The Mortal nothingness form and void, for mortality will cease when man beholds 6 himself God s reflection, even as man sees his reflection in a glass :15 15 Immortal men and women are models of spiritual sense, drawn by perfect Mind and reflecting those higher conceptions of loveliness 18 which transcend all material sense :7 12 Being is holiness, harmony, immortality. It is already proved that a knowledge of this, even in small degree, 9 will uplift the physical and moral standard Mind one and all of mortals, will increase longevity, will purify and elevate character. Thus progress will finally destroy 12 all error, and bring immortality to light :12 (only) 12 The harmony and immortality of man are intact. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit. II Corinthians 3:18 New Revised Standard Version Mirror, mirror, on the wall... countless reflections, one and all!... we can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord.... II Corinthians 3:18 The Living Bible HOUSE OF THIS TABERNACLE seems to be making a reference to the way Greeks in Paul s day thought of the body. Scholars say that, at the time, Greeks would refer to the body as a house, a tent, or even a tomb. Paul used terms his audience would relate to while he made a distinction between a material sense of body and our God-created, real selves. 6

7 During the summer before my junior year of high school, I was at a local beach with my family when I overheard two women talking about Lyme disease. Some of the things that they were discussing were very scary, and I recall a comment about the ailment being difficult to cure through material means. The women also expressed concern that the disease could recur even after treatment. While I probably forgot about the conversation after we went home, it may have been lingering in my thought. And during the next week, symptoms consistent with Lyme disease began to appear on my body. I was really scared. I think I hadn t watched what thoughts I was taking in, mulling over the symptoms I d heard discussed, rather than shutting them out. I had grown up relying on Christian Science for healing and had experienced a number of healings at that point, including flu, chicken pox, hypothermia, and other conditions. I was just starting to study Christian Science for myself, and the healings that I had experienced showed me that Christian Science heals. I felt confident in turning to Christian Science for healing in this case, too. My parents encouraged me to call a Christian Science practitioner to receive prayerful treatment, which I did. After a short time the symptoms did disappear, but they reappeared a little while later. This happened a number of times over the next several months, and even the next year or two. I came to dread the idea that I would have to deal with this condition forever, or that it would incapacitate me. I was an avid athlete I played varsity football and ran track and field and I wasn t able to compete in some of the games and events. I also developed a fear of strenuous exercise because sometimes it seemed to set off another attack or a relapse. Again with my parents support, I continued to receive prayerful treatment from a Christian Science practitioner, and I also began studying the weekly Christian Science Bible Lesson a lot more deeply in addition to praying for myself. I remember really thinking about the nature of health. There s a passage from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures where Mary Baker Eddy explains, Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind; nor can the material senses bear reliable testimony on the subject of health. The Science of Mind-healing shows it to be impossible for aught but Mind to testify truly or to exhibit the real status of man. Therefore the divine Principle of Science, reversing the testimony of the physical senses, reveals man as harmoniously existent in Truth, which is the only basis of health; and thus Science denies all disease, heals the sick, overthrows false evidence, and refutes materialistic logic (p. 120). I loved that concept, especially the first part: Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind meaning divine Mind, God. It reduced my fear that health was subject to relapse, or to a loss of some kind. As Christ Jesus showed, man is a spiritual idea, the spiritual image and likeness of God (Science and Health, p. 591). I started feeling less concerned with what the material senses were telling me and really became more focused on a spiritual sense of health. The practitioner s treatment and the support of others was a huge help to me during this time. At some point near the end of my senior year in high school, as I increasingly lost all fear, the symptoms including the marks that had appeared on my body disappeared entirely, and they never returned after that. Soon the fear of a relapse disappeared completely as well. That healing was complete over 15 years ago, and I ve never had a vestige of a similar condition. I ve been free to play lots I started feeling less concerned with what the material senses were telling me and really became more focused on a spiritual sense of health. SYMPTOMS OF LYME DISEASE HEALED BY NATE of sports since then, including college football and track, and to do plenty of mountain hiking and biking. Looking back on it now, I see that my moral outlook also improved right around the time of that healing. During my high school years, there was a lot of conversation and behavior among my peers involving sensuality, and I had taken in some of these thoughts and behaviors. Mrs. Eddy talks about the relation of moral challenges to our physical well-being (see Science and Health, p. 419), and as a result of this healing, I developed a deeper sense of purity. I ve become more and more grateful for this healing over the years, and I feel like it is clear evidence of permanent Christian Science healing. I m so grateful for my freedom, for being able to play sports and lead an active and busy life, and also to have gained a more spiritual sense of what health is.
