1 MARCH 2018 ADAR-NISSAN 5778 NEWSLETTER RODEPH SHOLOM ROME, GEORGIA CONTACT US! Message from the President February was another active month for us at Rodeph Sholom. We had visits from both Rabbi Beiner and Rabbi Lebow. Once again we hosted a wonderful musical event with the DIGS choir as part of our recognition of Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion month. The mission of DIGS, Developing Independence, Growth, and Security, is to provide safe housing, work and leisure opportunities for adults with developmental challenges. All of our evenings and Shabbat observances filled the month with time that was good for the heart and soul. March is bracketed by significant Jewish holidays. We start with Purim and finish with our annual community Seder. As always, watch for details in the weekly Chadashot. As always, thank you for supporting Rodeph Sholom and the presence of a Jewish community in NW Georgia. We depend on each and every one of you, both near and far, and appreciate your involvement. 7 Anselm Kiefer (born 8 March 1945) was born in 1945, in Donaueschingen in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. After taking courses in law at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität in Freiburg from 1965 to 1966, he studied art there under Peter Dreher. He continued his studies with Horst Antes at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe in 1969 before transferring the following year to the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he met Joseph Beuys. Beuys s interest in deploying an array of cultural myths, metaphors, and symbols as a means by which to engage and understand history inspired Kiefer. The profane realities of history overtook myth in Kiefer s work as of His canvases, with backdrops of charred and smoldering ploughed earth, became increasingly hermetic in their iconography, decipherable only with the help of the words and phrases he inscribed on them. In the early 1980s, Kiefer s interest in content was accompanied by an equal focus on both the materiality of the canvas and the visual complexity of its surface. Through the late 1980s and 1990s, mystical and mythological themes continued to proliferate in Kiefer s ongoing dialogue with the past. With the approach of the new millennium, he looked beyond Germany for subject matter. Between 1995 and 2001, he undertook a cycle of monumental paintings of the cosmos. From 2008 He lives and works in Barjac, France, in a large house in the Marais district, with his second wife, the Austrian photographer Renate Graf, and their two children. 7

8 Todesfuge The title of this work derives from the poem Todesfuge by the Romanian-Jewish poet Paul Celan. He writes this poem in 1945 as a result of his experiences with the horrors of the holocaust. Kiefer makes various paintings, watercolours and painted photographs based on this poem. Polar opposites Celan presents two female figures in Todesfuge: the blue-eyed Margarete with golden hair, a symbol of the Aryan woman, and the dark-eyed Sulamith with ashen hair, a symbol of the Jewish people. She is described in the Song of Solomon in the Old Testament as a bride of exceptional beauty. Celan links the two women inextricably by making them polar opposites. Sign of mourning The straw that Kiefer uses in this painting might refer to the blond hair of Margarete, but it may also, particularly considering the title, refer to Sulamith. With the background of the painting blackened, as it were, the straw is grey in places. The Sulamith celebrated in the Song of Solomon is a heartbroken woman who has sprinkled her hair with ashes as a sign of mourning. 8
