1 A few questions seem to come up again and again, wherever go. This fall, must have answered them a hundred times each. So, devote this column to the current "Top Questions at T.R.T. "When will we move into the new buildlng?" Sooner or later, but hope it will be sooner. t appears we are on schedule (kein ein hara!), but who knows'? Since anything can go wrong with construction, we have decided on the following: We will not make any plans for being in the building until we are actually in it. When we do move in, we will give everyone a few months' leeway for changing the location of. Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, programs. and the like. We won't even schedule our Dedication Servlce until we're in! "Will we have a Saturday Morning Service when we are in the building?" Yes. we will. t will be at 9:00 a.m. every Shabbat morning, and all the participants will share in leading the service and, eventually, in teaching Torah to each other. Note that said 9:00; Bar/Bat Mitzvahs are wonderful, but no Jew who just wants to pray on Shabbat should be made to sit through them every week! Bar/Bat Mitzvah services will begin at 10:30 a.m. "What is the Temple's rule about children at services?" We have no official policy, except to say that everyone is always welcome at all our services. The only unofficial rule is that when anyone (child or not) makes so much noise that others cannot pray, it is time for that person to go tor a walk in the hall until they quiet down a little. For the most part, this works very well. "Why are so many courses required for an Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah?" Because if your kids have to do it, so do you! Technically, all adults have to do to celebrate their Bar/Bat Mitzvah is read the two Torah blessings. n fact, that is all kids have to do, too, but our congregation says more is required if you want to celebrate this important event here. We want you to know how to study, how to learn, and how to question in that uniquely Jewish style called "studying Torah." t isn't easy, but the feeling of having really done something substantial is tremendous, and usually leads to more studying which is the real test of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. "Why do children do so little for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah?" Whenever hear this, know the questioner has never been to one of our Bar/Bat Mitzvah services, but is only speaking about Friday night. Most of our B'nai Mitzvah do virtually the entire service, including Torah and Haftarah readings. However. on the Friday night before their "big day," we honor them by calling them for an (continued... >

2 ... FRO RABB WEBER (cont'd) aliyab and asking them to lead one prayer in the service. to see what our kids can really dol Come on a Saturday, " "What is happening with the 'Who is a Jew?' issue in srael?" Good news! The sraeli Supreme Court recently upheld our claim that Jews converted by Reform and Conservative Rabbis are, indeed, Je"s, and ruled that the Minister of the nterior must process and approve applications for citizenship from them, just as from any other Jew. This case, which took years and thousands of dollars, was won by hard work from ARZA the Association of Reform Zionists of America and its legal division, the srael Religious Action Center. ARZA has much more to do, so hope you will join or renew your membership when the item shows up on your December dues bill. "How can get a copy of your High Holiday sermons?" With the help of Loretta Shapiro, all these sermons are now typed up. will be happy to send you a copy of any of them; Just call and tell me which one(s) you would like. "How are Shira and Eytan doing?" Both are doing fine, and won't show you pictures unless you ask, or hint, or say the word "baby." Eytan sleeps all day, so he is able to keep us up all night. This is why we look as if we haven't slept in two months. We are tired, but happytired. Thanks for asking! Shalom, Rabbi Don Weber (c) Temple Rodeph Torah, 1989 YOU ARE CORDALLY NVTED Please join us on Friday evening, November 3, 1989 at 8:00 p.m. when our son, Craig, is called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah. We park the car at the end of Mohawk; it's quite a sight seeing the building in the distance. rising like a monument from the red clay. With each visit more of the work had been completed. We have had two development houses built and can't remember either of them going up this fast. These excursions were interesting in that there was never anyone around a little like walking down Wall Street on a Sunday. You know that in the next twentyfour hours the scene will be one of clamorous activity. but for now it's just the sounds of the wind and an occasional passing car. We would meander through the halls, stand in the exact spot we imagined the school secretary's desk, and check out the Rabbi's point of view from the BeDa. Then, on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. another of the small miracles in the evolution of Temple Rodeph Torah occurred. There, surrounded by bare (continued... ) 3

4 cinder block, standing amid piles of wallboard, our congregation held its first service in its own Sanctuary. Okay, there was no electricity, no chairs, and the acoustics were primitive. But if ever the phrase "eloquent in its simplicity" had meaning, it was that moment when the construction site became a Temple. And, now realize that as enjoyable as our Sunday visits are, they don't compare to the exhilaration of being in the Sanctuary with the people who are making it happen. 10 t was not supposed to happen this way. f. six years ago. anyone would have suggested it was possible. 'would have laughed. Or more likely. would have run. This was to be a necessary inconvenience. Nothing more. Something you accepted in life. You went to school. got married. had children. didn't eat bread on Passover and joined a Temple so your sons could "get Bar Mltzvahed." Getting involved? Give me a break. My life style was certainly too sophisticated for that. work! commute! go to the gym three nights a week!! Then. without realizing it. started to notice certain things. The way a school gymnasium was transformed into a sanctuary. The way there was always apple juice for the kids after services. The way was always receiving bulletins in the mail announcing a variety of activities. Then started noticing people. Mostly the same people. They were always around. At services on Friday nights. At school early on Sunday mornings. At Sisterhood meetings. Always there. Always looking a little rushed. a little exasperated. a little frantic. But always there. "Who are these people?" t didn't take long for me to find the answer. They ar us. They are the best of us and what we are. They are our commitment to our children's futures. They are the volunteers. who with a lot of love, dedication and effort make it all work. For me they proved to be something more. They were my teachers. Their lesson, ultimately, was a simple one. Helping. on some level, is a selfish act. t makes you feel great. t makes you feel that you can make a difference. Leave a mark. have received far more than could ever give back. thank you all for helping me to grow and to learn my own strengths. Mostly. thank you for allowing your dreams to become my reality. 14 VCTORY ON LAW OF RETURN... srael's Supreme Court ruled this summer that the Ministry of the nterior must enforce the Law of Return. The ruling, which came in response to a suit filed by the ARZAsponsored srael Religious Action Center, was a major victory for the Reform movement and for the rule of law in the Jewish State. Since 1984, srael Ministry of the nterior has ignored the Law of Return and has refused to register Reform and Conservative converts who immigrate to srael as Jews. The srael Religious Action Center, sponsored by ARZA; appealed to the Supreme Court on behalf of five Reform converts who were denied registration. n its ruling, the Court said that the Ministry must register as Jews all converts who come to srael, and it has no power to make judgments on the validity of a conversion ceremony performed abroad. Reform leaders hailed the decision as a major victory for religious liberty and religious pluralism in srael. You can help further the cause of religious rights in srael by joining ARZA, which is financing a series of court cases on behalf of srael's Reform movement. Contact the Temple office or the rabbi for more information about ARZA membership. LOCAL BOY NEEDS HELP...
