My husband, Jeff, and I had the enjoyment of reading The Tent as new members, unfortunately, that was the only edition we ever received. I realize how valuable it is to have a resource for information about the CBJ congregation, activities, news and happenings. That said, I sincerely hope that you have missed The Tent as well and will help me in reinventing it. You may ask, how can I help? Many ways! Send me an with a suggestion, submission, information, trivia, pictures, advertisement, fun facts or anything else you could possibly think of. My , phone line and mailbox are open to you. This is a newsletter about CBJ for CBJ so together let s make it something EXCITING!! Without all of the articles, information, and collaboration from the many people who helped make the newsletter possible, it would be another month without The Tent. Registration took place on Sunday morning Oct 10, during a terrific, hearty breakfast prepared by Gary Brooks our new PTO Chairperson. Tov M'od Gary! Beit Sefer Calendars were handed out and a short meeting took place to introduce the teachers and make a few announcements. We had 43 students register for our Beit Sefer, Hebrew School, B'nai Mitzvot Classes and Confirmation. Watch the Temple website and for CBJ s for many upcoming CBJ Beit Sefer Family Events! We are looking forward to a great year of learning and fun for all our students. Please plan your arrival at the BJCC so our child(ren) can be in their classroom on time! Parents are encouraged to sit in on any classes and learn right along with the children. A parent, or a designated person, must enter the building to pick up any child(ren) for dismissal to ensure the safety of our children. BOOK FAIR TO SUPPORT BEIT SEFER The PTO invites all adults, children and families to attend the book fair to be held for 3 weeks on Sundays, December 3, 10 and 17 during Beit Sefer school hours (9:45AM - 12:00PM). Books will also be available for purchase the evening of the Sisterhood/ Brotherhood party on Tuesday, December 5. Stock up on your Jewish library or get an early start on your holiday gift giving. 4 CBJ ADULT EDUCATION NEWS You ll hear it said: A bright new way at CBJ! Happy 5767 once again to all! A new year, an innovative and (we hope) attractive new Adult Ed program for the community. We plan to offer a diversity of topics - a little something for everyone on a roughly once a month basis. Most presentations will be at the community center on Sunday mornings. Learn something, have fun! NOVEMBER Sunday November 2, 10 a.m, CBJ community center. Grand Opening Spectacular!! Our own Rabbi Silverman presides at a special class. His subject for the day, Continuing Jewish Education: Revisiting the High Holiday Services, was inspired by real-life conversations with congregants. Lots of Q & A! November 1-12 Let s go to the movies. Specifically, the Boston Jewish Film Festival. This year s offering, literally dozens of new films on Jewish themes, is the 18 th annual. You can check out the schedule at For the film buffs amongst us we ll organize car pools and can set up a post-festival discussion, screenings will be at several urban venues, mostly the Coolidge Corner Theater, Brookline and the MFA in Boston. Plus there will be two South Shore screenings, at the Showcase Cinemas, Randolph. Nina s Room, about teenagers and particularly recommended for teenagers, will be shown Mon. Nov 6 at 7 p.m. Out of Sight, a psychological mystery, shows Wed. Nov 8 at 7 p.m. A cinch to do carpools for these. DECEMBER December 17 at the Community Center Let there be music! 5 JOIN US THROUGHOUT THE YEAR FOR EXCITING ACTIVITIES HERE IS WHAT WE ARE DOING November 10-12: Fall Conclavette Weekend event with a program on Saturday, event TBA. Last year s event was the music of Rick Recht and an overall great event that took place in Needham OUR PAST YEAR EVENTS CBJ Youth Group hosted a delicious spaghetti and salad dinner in January with 50 CBJ ers in attendance. Following this successful fundraising dinner, the teens led a relaxed, enjoyable Shabbat service and then served a festive Oneg Shabbat. This is PARTY's annual fundraiser. Many thanks to everyone in the community who attended and supported us! We sent 4 PARTY members to Institute. This was possible through financial support from the Jacob & Minnie Kaplan NFTY Institute Fund. Again many thanks. It seems every month one or all of our members were off to another event from Framingham to Bangor to Manchester, N.H. to Connecticut. Much of this traveling was due to the warm relationship developed with SHASTY, Hingham's NFTY youth group. We shared rides and our youth, rented vans, and had an extended family. Many friendships are made at these events and our Jewish beliefs are strengthened. On a regional level, the group is split between middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12). Known as "Jr. PARTY" and "PARTY. PARTY stands for Plymouth Area Temple Youth. We are members of NFTY-NE (National Federation of Temple Youth - Northeast). While the middle school group (Jr. PARTY) attends an annual Shul-In in Brookline, the high school group (PARTY) has the opportunity to attend a regional activity almost every month. The Plymouth South Shore SaEF Fencing Club wishes to thank the CBJ Board for having agreed to allow the use of Weisshaupt Hall for a preliminary ten weeks beginning Monday Sept. 11. Offered will be a SabreK course for 8-10 year olds, from 6 to 7 pm, and a Beginners' Foil course for all 11 thru mature adults, from 7 to 9 pm. All courses will last 10 weeks. 7 LIVES.. THE BROTHERHOOD LIVES!!!!!!!!! (At least for one more meeting) The monthly brotherhood meeting changed venue for the most recent October meeting. The members were treated to a (reeeallly good) dinner (at Bangkok Thai) for the Brotherhood and was punctuated by a reorganization of responsibilities, At least for one more meeting. That meeting is being tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, November 14th. Right now, the only commitment we're looking for is: COME TO THE MEETING!!! There will be dessert and coffee. Some lively discussion on whether the men of this congregation can let Brotherhood "fall by the wayside" or, at the very least "fill a seat" at the next meeting. Jeff Bridgewater will be contacting you to join us. Please respond in the affirmative. It'll cost you nothing but two hours of your time during the month of November. Please do not forget all of the benefits Brotherhood has brought and can continue to bring to the community. We look forward to seeing you November 14th! Their donations have allowed us to earn a tidy sum of money for the past several parades. So we wish to acknowledge these contributions and thank them. ONEG SHABBAT Please select a special Friday to host Oneg Shabbat! It is a joyous opportunity for CBJ members to get together after Friday night services. It is a minimal cost with a spiritual reward. 8 RESIDENT S PAGE BY SHEILA FINER It was wonderful seeing so many of you at our recent Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur services. Greeting old friends and meeting new ones deepens the spirit of the holidays. This year the executive board invited people to attend their first holiday services with us as our guests and people responded to our advertisements and s in great numbers. Several have already joined the congregation noting how warm and welcoming a congregation Beth Jacob is. I spoke on Yom Kippur about how excited I am to be working with the new executive board and committee chairpersons and members. But, we still have several positions to fill and an hour or more of your time a month can make a big difference to all aspects of CBJ. Some people stopped me after my speech or called during the following days to offer their help and I'm thrilled to see both established and new members wanting to take part. There's still room for YOU to join in too. We had a full house to celebrate Sukkot and hope our upcoming holidays as well as other children's services will bring more of the same. These children are the future of CBJ. Come and join them as they learn about the holidays and their Judaism. I leave you with one thought for an upcoming Shabbat: Turn off those cell phones Turn off those pagers Turn off those Blackberrys TURN ON TO JUDAISM! CBJ After you have finished reading the magazine you purchased or subscribed to this month, share it by dropping it off at the community center some Sunday morning during Beit Sefer so others can enjoy it. Also, take one home Recycles! that you don't ordinarily purchase and save some money. There will be a box marked "Recycled Magazines" in Weishaupt Hall. If this idea takes off, we can start other recycling projects in the future. Reminder. Friday night services will start at 7:30 pm beginning in November. Please take note.

9 SECURITY COMMITTEE HIGH HOLIDAY UPDATE: Once again the High Holidays have come and gone and (praise the Lord) nothing of note occurred. This year we again employed a policeman as backup for CBJ security, and the Ushers and Greeters made sure all new people would be welcomed. PARKING INFORMATION We have obtained the agreement of the Sovereign Bank and the owner of the building across Court St (that houses the South Shore Savings Bank), to have us use their parking lots at all times other than office hours, throughout the year including Sundays, evenings, and High Holydays. When days fall on weekdays other arrangements will be sought and the congregation will be notified. Volunteers always needed for security during services, please let Harry Shamir know if you would like to help. BUILDING COMMITTEE As we all know, both buildings are in need of much work. The Community Center we are all agreed, is becoming a burden best gotten rid of. Unfortunately at this time the selling would not gain us much, and we are trusting the upcoming renovation of the old Court House and neighborhood, to make this property more valuable. In the meantime we are trying to house activities of interest to Plymouth as a whole, such as a theatre group and the SaEF Fencing Club. The idea is to hopefully make the term Community Center" mean something to non-members as well. For the Synagogue we have great (grand?) plans: restructuring the whole downstairs, increasing its size, expanding a reopened balcony to its original size, and making the building ready to house most of CBJ activities short of High Holydays. To raise the funds necessary for this, Mrs. Rose Geller has agreed to chair a Fund Raising Committee, to which we all wish an astounding success. The Building Committee is seeking a few good people, an army of just a few! The intent is to have volunteers for such small jobs as painting, boarding up for winter, and small repairs. 10 HOW TO STAY SAFE IN THE WORLD TODAY 1. Avoid riding in automobiles because they are responsible for 20 percent of all fatal accidents. 2. Do not stay at home because 17 percent of all accidents occur in the home. (that's 37 % already) 3. Avoid walking on streets or sidewalks because 14 percent of all accidents occur to pedestrians. (now that's 51%) 4. Avoid traveling by air, rail, or water because 16 percent of all accidents involve these forms of transportation. (that's 67%) 5. Of the remaining 33 percent, 32 percent of all deaths occur in hospitals. Above all else avoid hospitals. You will be pleased to learn that only 0.01 percent of all deaths occur in a, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders. CJB PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION Recap: Our first meeting was October 1 and we had a fantastic kickoff. Our Sukkot Celebration was held at the on the cool and windy night of Friday evening Oct 6. It was a Beit Sefer event that drew a happy crowd of fifty adults and lots of our eager children. After decorating our little Sukkah everyone came in for a Shabbat service and a harvest theme Oneg Shabbat provided by CBJ's Sisterhood. Thank you to Jessie Bridgewater, Barb Aharoni, Melissa Goldbach, Sheila Finer and Robin Kirby for providing their time, decorations, fruit basket and baked goods. Upcoming: Our next meeting will be November 5th, at noon following classes so our teaching staff can participate. We look forward to seeing you.

11 CBJ FUNDRAISING On Thursday October 12, a truckload of bags of food to the Plymouth Food Bank was delivered from CBJ. They were extremely grateful, as their supplies were depleted. The Plymouth Food Bank serves a very large area of Plymouth County. Thank you to all who participated in the Rosh Hashana/Yom Kippur Food Drive. Thank you for helping the people of Plymouth County. Hopefully we will organize another food fundraiser in spring, around Passover. Thank you, Michelle Baum, Co-Chair, Social Action Committee We have received our first case of the 2007 South Shore Dine 'N Save books. This fifth edition has over 250 discount coupons good at car washes, family and fast food restaurants, local attractions, dry cleaners and lots of other places. This is another fundraiser and your CBJ earns an excellent commission on each book sold. You will be able to purchase books at Beit Sefer every Sunday school that s in session. There will be a display available for your inspection. Each book is and makes a great gift... Thank you for your continued support of our beloved CBJ! We have Shaw's and Stop & Shop cards available in $50.00 denominations. Really folks, this is a "no brainer", it costs you no extra money to participate in this program. Your shul garners 5% on each dollar you spend from these cards. What I don't understand is why I see fellow congregants shopping without these cards. So, I ask myself how can I get the message to these families? Let's do the math. With an approximate population of 125 families and each family were to purchase $100. a month we would wind up with a commission of $625. Annualized we would realize $7500. income and it didn't cost you a dime. Please consider using these cards... thank you! Carl Finer The Great Lakes Scrip program continues at a snails pace. Another sure fire winner and our commissions are excellent. Just log on to the web site click retailers list and print to use as a work sheet... Orders are typically placed every other week on a Monday. For our congregants that aren't internet savvy, just call Carl Finer and he will walk you through the process. The one fact to bear in mind is the standard freight charge of $7.00 is equally divided amongst each participant in that order. We continuously look forward to your active participation in these worthwhile fundraisers. CBJ is donating a quantity of used computers to the impoverished West African nation of Guinea-Bisseau. This is a community wide mitzvah and we all can feel good about it. In a nation of 1.5 million there are 23,000 televisions and less than 1200 cell phones. CBJ was highlighted on Channel 4 news, in The Old Colony and Boston Herald. The computers will arrive in a donated ambulance along with two donated fire trucks across the ocean and arrive a months later. Representing CBJ was president, Sheila Finer along with Gary Brooks (his employer made the original donation to us), Dan Hirschhorn and Carl Finer. Additionally, David Applefield, a Paris based reporter for The Financial Times of London who originally broke the story of the tragedy among these people, is also the son of former CBJ'ers Jerry & Janet Applefield. Vinny demacedo handled the donations and brother Ollie did the translation.

12 IN THE KITCHEN Welcome to one of the new highlights of the Tent. A place to share food ideas, recipes, traditions and good eats! Please send your favorite recipe, your family tradition or a delicious creation. This will be a recurring segment in the Tent, so please help make this a fun and delicious place to share ideas and traditions among the CBJ family. LEMON CHICKEN (OR TURKEY) AND WILD RICE SOUP Perfect for winter supper or for using leftover Thanksgiving turkey! 1 large onion, diced fine 3 ribs celery, diced fine 1 teaspoon fresh thyme 1 red bell pepper, diced into 1/4 pieces 1/4 cup flour 1 cup water 6 cups chicken or turkey stock 1/2 pound chicken or turkey meat, diced into 1/2 pieces 1/2 pound wild rice blend, cooked 6-8 tablespoons lemon juice 1 cup skim milk In medium pan, spray with nonstick spray and place over medium-low heat. Add onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add celery and continue cooking until tender. Add thyme and red pepper, ix well and cook for 3-4 minutes more. Add flour, mix well, and cook for 3-4 minutes more. In a large soup pot, combine water, chicken or turkey stock and sautéed vegetables. Add chicken, cooked wild rice, 6 tablespoons lemon juice, and milk. Bring to a boil and continue cooking until soup is thickened. Taste. Season with salt and pepper. Add additional 2 tablespoons lemon juice if desired. Remove from heat, sprinkle with parsley or a little paprika and serve. Serve hot. Freezes well and doubles or triples easily. The Dreidel Game: How to Play To play, each player starts with ten pennies, or nuts or chocolates. Each player puts a penny in the pot. The dreidel is spun, one player at a time. If the dreidel lands on nun, nothing happens. If the dreidel lands on gimmel, the player wins the pot. If the dreidel lands on heh, the player takes half the pot. If the player lands on shin or peh, the player adds two pennies to the pot. When no pennies are left in the pot, each player adds one. When one player has won everything, the game is over. 1. C 2.
